I don't understand how Drew, who is a huge fan of the Halo series (which has its fair share of strange names) would be confused by and make fun of those found in MGS.

Never played the first one. Hoping they keep this up because it's already put some things into context from the later games I did play.

They still should've played Twin Snakes, even if it were just for the graphics, psone games are so hard to look at. And the controls would be better.

I honestly think that the dated graphics are part of the experience that they're going for. Not to mention that the gameplay itself is worse in the remake (easier gameplay, and easier to control, but a much less interesting experience), and that it made a lot of cut scenes into tacky messes.

It's like, I don't know, saying that you're going to play through Donkey Kong, and then playing the remade levels of Donkey Kong 94 on the Game Boy. Sure, the controls are better in the Game Boy version, and it's way easier to play, but it's not really playing Donkey Kong. The differences in controls and difficulty are enough to make it a completely different (and less interesting) experience.

The frustrating thing with this is that Drew keeps following Ocelot around in a circle instead of turning around and heading him off.

Dan and Drew are magic. They're making some of the best premium content. Dan was clearly the right choice for Giant Bomb. (not sarcasm).

edit: added not sarcasm to be clear

Well done @drewbert, got there eventually!!

You could have dodged Ocelot's bullets like Neo.

Looking forward to Part 0003. Hope you saved.

Oh geez, I'm so nervous he didn't save now. Great episode, despite the constant chasing of Ocelot as opposed to just letting him waste his ammo from across the room.

Wow, you know so many secrets about the game!

Deep MGS lore incoming ;)

Those elevator buttons refer to B1 and B2 (as in basement levels) - the first dash just looks similar to the 1

I never understood that opinion. The cut scenes in TS scream Metal Gear, they are so over the top and fit the MGS franchise like a glove. Especially if you look at the sequels.

I'd say that most of the criticism comes from nostalgia goggles. But it's Drews first MGS and I believe he would enjoy TS more than the original.

I think we're losing Drew, guys. He seems completely fed up with both the gameplay and the insanity that is MGS--and we're only on the first game. I kinda wish they don't do more if he isn't actually enjoying himself.

The huge Metal Gear fan in me is making it very hard for me to watch this. It's the whole Drew kind of wants to get into the series, but it seems like he is fighting against it the whole time. The briefing videos for example, Drew has said many times about how he is in the dark and would like to know more, the game presents him with info and he groans. Though I get, that it may be too much for a One-Hour internet video.

Also them making jokes/or talking over about stuff that isn't related to what's at hand currently during the cut-scenes bothers me. Again I know as piece of content it's entertainment and has to be entertaining first an foremost but it irks me.

This is more a rant then a critique, so keep on doing what you are doing and I hope Drew get's totally into it.

P.S: I think it's kind of weird for Drew to be annoyed when the game explains itself on the smallest of things ('Directly stimulates the small bones of you ear') when he himself likes the minutia of info and detail on every knob/switch/action of a plane in a flight sim.

I wish Dan would stop saying they "screwed up" the voices in Twin Snakes when the changes made are in line with the voice acting in MGS4, and makes more sense in the overall fiction. You know, like Mei Ling no longer sounding Chinese when she was raised in Hawai'i!

I love this video series, even though I only cared for MGS 1 and 4. This is making me want to play 1 again.

And it does not hurt to shoot a Glock...

My revolver/bear gun (I don't hunt bears, I only camp with them and want to stay alive) kicks way worse, is eight pounds, and has more recoil. No idea what Drew is talking about.

I forgot about the 初見殺し trapdoors. Not cool, Kojima!

This fight going long actually ended up working out well because it forced Drew to try new things and do more exploration of the area. Doing it now just means you'll maintain those habits for later parts in the game, which is a good thing, believe me!

I don't think I was even mentally developed enough as a 12 year old to think ANY of the made up names in this game were anything but awesome. I can see them seeming dumb as an adult, but damn this game was the epitome of cool to every school kid when it came out. It's kind of a shame Drew only gets to experience MGS after everything it does has now been done so much better through many other games. I myself have not been able to go back and enjoy old games that were beloved by many, but I know some people can do that. I'm sure Drew will come to appreciate the games, just in a very different way than many of us who played them when they came out.

Well that was incredibly frustrating to watch.

@danryckert should have told @drewbert that he doesn't need to stop and take aim to shoot.

...and that running around in circles when you both move at the same speed means that you'll never catch up.

Yeah, it's still great fun to watch this, but I don't know if @drewbert being self conscious about this being filmed makes him think less about what he is doing.

That Ocelot boss fight is really not that hard if you change directions once in a while and hug the pillars, rather than keeping to the same direction and take the longest route possible around. I think it would be fine if Dan clued him in a bit about stuff like that.

I remember when I was a kid I spent ages trying to beat Ocelot. I gave up at first and the game sat on a shelf for at least a half a year until I decided to come back to it and managed to beat it shortly thereafter.

I like Metal Gear Solid and I couldn't watch the briefing all the way through, since most of it is just telling you stuff you already know, but longer and while staring at a still image for most of the time.

@drewbert When you shoot you can just tap the square button, the auto aim is pretty good at compensating. You could have ended that bossfight MUCH earlier if you didn't hesitate so much, had lots of opportunity for damage.

@mooseymcman: It's not just Mei Ling though, they dropped nearly everyone's accents. Plus, the voice work is simply not as good, the deliveries are worse overall. So I would say yes, they screwed up the voice work (among many other things) in Twin Snakes.

@berserker976: I dunno, the voice acting here doesn't really sound much better than in Twin Snakes (which I recently re-watched all the cutscenes, last year I think, so it's not just nostalgia clouding my judgment). Also, Naomi's British accent sounds really fake.

I think it's a bit like one of your friends persuading you to watch a movie with him, that he finds really funny. He is just going to watch you in anticipation that you'll laugh in all the right spots and it makes the experience really unnatural. It's great that Dan loves the series so much, but I could see it being a bit of a damper on Drew's enthusiasm.

This whole video seems very uncharacteristic of Drew, he's just wildly wasting ammo when he knows it's scarce. I feel like he could have won the fight on the second attempt

Drew doesn't know anything about MGS, he stated that as his reason for playing this in the first place. And when the game gave him all the info he just groaned and never watched it.

Just my 2 cents, but I love this series. Don't tell them or anything, but it's practically a series of Endurance Runs. I can't resist some good schadenfreude either; the sense of triumph is all the better for having some adversity too.
