As others have said, don't worry about the length or about how many parts there are gonna be. This is the kind of game/series you just have to take slow.

I never struggled much with the Ocelot fight, but it did take me a while to beat Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf and Liquid. God how I hate that Liquid fight.

Also please play through every game.

I just beat this game yesterday for the first time (Beat MGS2 and 4 long ago, just beat 3 a couple weeks back) and I can't remember the last time I was so frustrated with a game. The Liquid fight infuriated me for a bit and after finally beating it, the on rails shooting bit had me furious for a good while too. I think I just grew impatient after that Liquid fight.

@zokamoka: Both are great. Twin Snakes was hilarious for taking MGS's already over the top cutscenes and making them even more over the top.

-I played this game for the 1st time like a year ago and every boss battle took me several tries too

-How many times have we watched Brad & Vinny fight the same boss?

-Don't worry about it Drew, just play. The. Game.

When you get spotted (like at the end of this video), don't panic. Just quickly hit one of your equip buttons to pause the action, and think about what you want to do (and equip a ration :) )

If you thought Ocelot was eyerolly now then I can't wait for you to see him in MGS 3.

Oh, I plan to. I have to take back about half of what I've said about the Metal Gear series, though. I'd seen only cutscenes and heard story beats, and assumed that it was completely full of itself. Now that I'm getting into it personally, I'm finding it to be a pretty pleasant blend of tongue-in-cheek nonsense, insane attention to detail--MGS still looks good because of the little things--, overblown philosophizing, and really dumb anime stylings. Seriously, "Psycho Mantis." How stupid is that?! "We justify keycards by electrolyte pseudo-science, but hey, here's a psychic. Oh, and a shaman while we're at it." It's kind of great.

Good on you! I love how this video feature has allowed people who have always dismissed the series to finally give it a chance. It's a uniquely absurd series, but it also pulls it off really well.

The Ocelot fight is a bit bullshit. You should at least have an option of zooming out so you can see where your enemy's going.

I didn't think this episode was boring at all. It was actually pretty exciting watching Drew beat Ocelot. Keep up the great work gentlemen!

I love Drew but it's really bumming me out/pissing me off that he's not enjoying this.

I'm with Drew. I've always thought this to be a bad game and watching this just reinforces it. Finished 1, 2 and 3, I hold some nostalgia for them, but no one can ever convince me that MGS is a good game. Crappy camera, crappy controls, bad writing... it's really not that good :P

This is such an amazing Premium feature!!!

Thanks!

Edit: I don't understand how he didn't realize running around the OUTSIDE of the pillars adds the time it takes to catch up to Ocelot... running around the pillars at a much tighter turn would decrease the time it takes to catch up to him right?

I'm not gonna be to hard on him. After all he's drew at this game. No? Bad pun? =P

Anyways it's kind of amazing how good this actually looks considering the low resolution, low-res textures, low poly-count and the lack of perspective-corrected texture mapping on the PS1. The dithering and crude post-processing along with the gritty textures goes a long way.

Great episode. Totally on board with letting Drew work his way through. I thought Dan did a good job chiming in at the right times (right up until mentioning the cigarette at the end). I remember many failed attempts during my 1st time against Ocelot. I'd say it be best to save most hints for getting really stuck and avoiding too much back tracking. Definitely good to let the boss battles play out naturally.

Man, Drew ran in a lot of circles … that boss fight was fucking amazing at the time, but this was back when you expected to have to learn and figure out controls and game systems without the game explicitly teaching you. Also if he wasn't on video or they had done the VR training first he probably would have spent more time experimenting with everything.

In case nobody has already shouted about it a bunch, Cordite is a particular kind of smokeless powder that's extruded in big long strings (thus the 'cord' part). It was heavily used by the British in .303 and various other fixed ammunition.

Cordite is outdated and no longer used. It also doesn't smell like sulfur (gunpowder is made of carbon, sulfur, and saltpeter), but like Dan says: anything can beforgiven if it's cool, and "Cordite" is a fucking cool word.

This feature is great, it got me to renew premium after lapsing nearly a year ago. @drewbert was saying that viewers would be hating this episode but I absolutely loved it. We all went through the many deaths against ocelot, I'd never had a boss fight like it.

This series is not only nostalgia for the games but nostalgia of the frustration and joy we all went through playing these games for the first time.

Well done @drewbert@danryckert

Oh wow... Although I was frustrated watching Drew die so many times, it was worth it to hear Ocelot's post-fight dialogue.

I didn't know that he says something completely different if you die a bunch of times. He said, "I'm disappointed. You're no match for the boss." and so on. I only remember him saying "You're pretty good." after the fight because I never died that much.

I thought I had I wrung Metal Gear Solid completely dry, so it was cool to see something new.

I'm not gonna watch the video yet cause I gotta find out if there is anything wrong with the upload but if you hold square and x you can shoot/aim and run at the same time.

Yup, really wish Dan knew to say that, also, when Ocelot is reloading, Drew could have stayed right beside him shooting everytime he stopped flashing. He had a chance to do it a few times but he ran away.

Really enjoyable to watch though, keep it up guys.

Yeah, shooting while running would have been really helpful in this fight, but Dan didn't remember to point that out or Drew just to try it.^^

Oh god Dan! This fight doesn't even take 2 minutes.^^ I thought you could help him win this quick, but even you seem to not have a way to beat him quick. Run in the opposite direction of him sometimes and shoot while running, that way you can still get him without having to stop and take to long to aim. :)

I couldn't ignore it anymore, I got premium just to watch this.

Back in the day I got my copy of MGS used and without a booklet, I beat it like 3 times for the endings. A full ten years later I bought VR Missions off Ebay (also without booklet) and absolutely could not fathom the records they were expecting me to beat in Time Attack... only then I watched the demo video after beating that and found out you could run and aim at the same time.

Talk about replay value.
