Great to hear Jeff's thoughts on where GB is heading and knowing that their is a plan and some excitement for the future.

Some people seems to need to say how much they dislike Patrick every time they can. It's strange.

@amyggen: Why is it strange? It's OK for people to say what they like and dislike. Maybe there's a lot of people out there that really like the content Giantbomb produces, but don't enjoy the Patrick Klepik content. Why shouldn't they feel free to express that in a non-hostile way?

@william619: I think it's strange to mention it like that when it has no relevance to the content you're commenting on. "Good video, by the way I don't like Patrick". Of course people should be able to express what they don't like about the site, but there's a time and place for it and comment sections on videos that have literally nothing to do with him isn't it.

@amyggen: It was related to the Giantbomb E3 coverage, but whatever. I'm not trying to be activistic about this, it was just an off-the-cuff comment that represents how I felt about Giantbomb's E3 coverage; a genuine reaction to the content in the video.

I feel like it's the same thing as "Brad is Bad at games" at this point.

@monkeyman04: At least that comment gets thrown around in videos where Brad is playing a game, even if I think it's an extremely tired comment. Same with "it hurts to watch them play this game" etc.

I sent in the Gametap question. I tried out the service shortly after I sent that question. It's ok, not great. There is no guarantee that your controller will work which is kindof bad. It did allow me to try out a lot of games that I would never buy for myself. It also has some games that aren't available on Steam anymore (like Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena).

When you want to cancel your subscription you need to send an e-mail to support one week before it's renewed with your id number and username which is kinda meh.

It's blowing my mind that Gametap still exists. I remember hearing about it ages ago and thinking it would be dead in a month. Guess they found a niche?

Its a pretty mean comment man. Patrick wears his heart on his sleeve like any true nerd. If you don't like his journalistic approach then so be it, but personal attacks "I don't like you" are pretty babyish.

Heheh, I actually regret calling your comment babyish as it was a dig, not very nice of me. Patrick is a nice guy and he's in the forums alot. I would hate for him to read your comment as he cops a lot of shit from people. Personally I think he's one of the most switched on journos in gaming... watch him on the Bonus round with Keeley and Totilo... he owns it cause the guys knows his shit.

@ptys: Sure. But it's a crowded space and his critical approach is pretty common among games journalists. There are other guys that operate in that same space that have humor and they entertain at the same time. Patrick does the investigative stuff as well, but you know, there is just not that many interesting stories to uncover about the gaming industry. Most of his work is redundant and he doesn't have a funny or engaging personality to fall back on.

@william619: I guess its what you think funny is. Personally I find Patrick really engaging especially when him Jeff and Brad are chewing the fat about stuff like the closure of 38 Studios or the EVO fallout. Everyone goes on about how funny Vinny is, he's ok but I wouldn't pay cash dollars to hear his one liners. What about Alex, Brad and Drew... how are they so engaging and funny?

It still blows me away that people hate on Patrick so much. He's contributed some amazing stuff to this site consistently for years now and he's an all around nice guy.

@xeirus: It's not being rude. Some of you guys need to watch it with trying to censor other peoples' opinions. Patrick's a big boy and he can take it. He doesn't need a squad of henchmen to go around trying to suppress community members' opinions.

@william619: I don't see anyone trying to censor or suppress you. The comment train you just replied to consisted of people simply saying your comment was unnecessary and rude. Something I definitely agree with, considering you are in a thread that has nothing to do with Patrick.

A handful of people simply disagree with what you said, and how you said it. When you to get all dramatic and hyperbolic, tossing words like "suppress" and "henchmen" around you start to sound a bit silly.

I, too, liked the E3 coverage a great deal. Didn't like every guest, but that's fine.

Know he won't possibly see this but to the guy saying that design by committee has always worked out did not play Uncharted 3 with the weird ass 8 way default aim setting that was added because the community responded well to it. Man that was junk.

I ALWAYS up difficulty in games where it's recommended.

Definitely made Gears 3, Uncharteds, Halos, Bioshock Infinite, etc waaaaaaaaaaaay more enjoyable. And I'd argue that the GB community reading the reviews aren't the standard gaming masses. Most everything on the site caters to people more than willing to dig deeper into the industry.

Also!

People trying to get into games journalism. At this point, it seems like writing isn't even an avenue worth pursuing. People with years of experience in the industry can't even get those jobs any more. There were tons of Patreon campaigns this week launched just to keep games writers from dying.

I really don't see that kind of thing lasting much longer, especially as the gaming community grows more educated and no longer needs to rely on reviews to inform their tastes.

Get into video stuff. Look into comedy and improve stuff. Funny/entertaining video game stuff seems like the only thing that even sticks a little bit anymore.

Loved the video @jeff! Not sure if you had any plans in place already, but it'd be cool to do a sort of "welcome" show for the new people joining the site. I don't know, like a live show where they sit down and show off their favourite game for a bit and you all talk about stuff? Maybe that's just an Unprofessional Fridays segment or something, I don't know.

A good example of a game's attributed writer not being responsible for the story is Brian Mitsoda on Alpha Protocol, who was infamously fired and had his story scrapped and then rewritten wholesale by someone else. Although he is credited as the Lead Creative Director and Writer of Alpha Protocol, he has publicly stated that the game in no way represents his original concept, story included.

Man, Gametap. Fun fact - I subscribed to Gametap to play Sam & Max Season One, which was a Gametap exclusive for a while, and I believe funded by Gametap. Thinking about that, I guess the Walking Dead stuff might not exist without Gametap.

Very pleased that Jeff gave such an honest answer about going into covering games. Lots of places give you the standard "oh, get a degree and write blogs" answer. When I was younger, of course I wanted to get into games coverage and that's what I wanted to hear.

But man... that line of work just doesn't seem secure at all. Luckily, Jeff's repeatedly said that things are constantly changing and they'll have to evolve. Different sites? I dunno, IGN seems to get layoffs every year. Not a good sign for traditional coverage.

Well, except for Game Informer. Those guys seem to have very minimal turnover and downsizing, so kudos to Andy and Reiner for keeping that ship flowing and changing with the times as needed.
