It will be interesting to see if all Sony first party games will receive a ps5 patch like Ghosts of Tsushima and Days Gone.

Would love to see how Nioh 2 does... not a Sony game but still an exclusive, wonder if they will do any work on it. Wasn't thinking about getting a PS5 year one for a number of reasons, but if the only game I ever play anymore gets 60fps resolution mode then I would have to start reconsidering.

the receiver-market seems to be dying. the mainstream just uses the tv + maybe a soundbar. we are a dying breed. =(

So, it sounds like the PS5 is acting like a PS4 Pro, in that if a game was updated to support the Pro, you can go in and choose which enhancements you want, but some games will just inherently run a little bit better by virtue of running on more powerful hardware. Meanwhile, Microsoft put in the work to ensure that all old Xbox games utilize the hardware of the Series X in some capacity.

Astrobot def seems the best launch game for either system. Looked fab to me.

Maybe its the quality of the stream, or maybe Ben is right, this just kind of didnt blow me away or do anything for me actually... I DID upgrade to 1X and felt the improvement ... this feels diminishing even compared to my base PS4 for games shown here. They got work to do.

@ultimaxe: yeah glad its not just me, felt like the XSeX back compat games were running smoother and better, a bit more work done there, in more stark contrast to here.

AV receivers will be around for a long while for those who want them. They'll probably get more expensive as they increasingly move into the "enthusiast" category, though.

A receiver is still essential to my setup. Like Brad, I have a bunch of older devices hooked up and need things like component and optical audio.

They're talking about the smooth performance, but I'm seeing dropped frames left and right. Perhaps a capture issue?

Did Brad play much of any games on the PS4? I'm halfway through and every game he's said that he hasn't played much of it on PS4.

I'm kind of curious about Telltale games running on these new machines.

I wish they'd shown us how PS5 handles cross-gen titles from the last gen. Back on the shift from PS3 to PS4 you could buy digital upgrades for physical PS3 titles like Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed Black Flag. You'd download digital copies of the PS4 games but had to have the PS3 discs in the drive to play them, I wonder how/if those PS4 downloads run on PS5.

Watch the digital foundry video they did on PS4 Backwards compatibility, and basically its the same as Series X. If you play a game with an unlocked framerate, you get 4K 60 smooth. If its locked at 30, then you get a smooth 30 frames with no dips into the 20s. Basically, an improvement all around. And this is why I'm getting a PS5, because I only have the base PS4 and don't have the Pro. So it will be a huge performance upgrade for me.

BTW: Digital Foundry talked about how a lot of PS4 Ubisoft games are having problems on the PS5 for some reason.

Maybe my expectations are low but seeing some of these games run at 60fps is cool as shit, honestly. A major advantage of PC gaming since the PS3/360 generation maybe slowly starting to go away. If, a few years down the road, console games are back to targeting 30fps with an inconsistent unlocked "performance" mode I'll be bummed.

Edit: The bridge hub area Brad was in for the first part of the God of War section was one of the worst areas of the game framerate-wise, IIRC. Definite improvement it seems.

Load times on Tony Hawk on PC are the instant youre looking for Jeff so I'd be shocked if the new consoles can't do it

Lethal mode in Ghost of Tsushima is the open world Bushido Blade I was expecting. It's fantastic.

per 37m in the video: I have been using an ARC for years with no issues. Things got too complicated with various video standards, so I just let the TV return the audio to an Audio receiver and everything works great.

@one1zero0one: God of War took a few hours to hook me, but once it did I was in. Easily one of the top 2 PS5 games. I still am bummed that no one listened to Vinny when he was pushing it for best music that year.

Yeah Horizon came out right around the time the PS4 Pro was launched. Seems like the pro launched a few months prior. I remember seeing it running on a 4k OLED at GDC and was pretty blown away.

Lance Mcdonald explains Bloodborne's 30fps lock and, you're correct, the physics are tied to the framerate, but Lance hacked in his own patches manually for every facet of the game. So, it's possible, but they just have to put in the legwork.

Brad not having a 4k TV after all these years despite working at a video games website and covering PS5 content is blowing my mind over here.

@brad On the AV Receiver front, some recent receivers that support the uncompressed or high bit rate audio codecs with 2.0 HDMI ports are getting firmware updates to support at least the eARC functionality (aka enhanced ARC or ARC 2.0). So you could in theory connect the PS5 and XSX to a HDMI 2.1 TV with an eARC port and get the best of both audio and visual without a brand new receiver. The display can do the fancy 120 Hz and adaptive vsync and the audio piped to the receiver could still be Dolby TrueHD/DTS Master/Atmos/Uncompressed 5.1/7.1 as supported by eARC. The Sony STR-DN1080 is one of the receivers that got a firmware update to support eARC for example.

It's actually not an uncommon thing for a tech-junkie to say, "That's new gadget is so cool! HELL no I won't be getting one at launch" for a number of reasons -- maybe their tech-junkie-ness means they love an earlier-gen product for its quirks, or maybe they're frozen by the concept of "but if I buy the new thing NOW, the next New Thing(tm) will be out in a couple of weeks!"

@ultimaxe: 900p games on xbox one are still 900p games on series x. They are both doing pretty much the same thing unless the game gets a patch.

Love what yall have managed to pull off while working from home. Very impressive! I will say as someone who is mostly deaf in one ear, tha tthe audio has been prettty inconssistent and at times very rough accross streams since lockdown started. I can only imagine how difficult it is to eq multiple mics, different brands and quality mics, and gamestreams and games. but as someone with hearing issues it is noticeably harder to hear the crew since streaming from home started. Thanks for everything you do and for providing great content and i hope the audio quality can get back to what it used to be. Have a great weekend everyone!

I didn't care for it much, either. It didn't feel very congruous with the story to be spending so much time deciding what kind of fancy pants to put on, lest I be killed by wolves. The game opens with you punching a man through the fucking earth, and then immediately you're getting overwhelmed by thawed corpses in a few hits. The writing of Kratos and The Boy didn't do much for me either, the Sony brand of emotionally-disturbed dad trying not to emotionally disturb his family arc is something that gets bogged down in their desire to also be video game-ass video games meant to cater to a wide audience. The gulf between what the game wants you to do and what the story is trying to convey is too massive for me to handle. For example, when you get to the first part where Atreus is having a temper tantrum, you can go poking around every nook and cranny for hidden treasure and upgrades, but the kid is constantly whining at you to leave, even though he'll also listen to your commands if you need him to do stuff. They could have designed a segment where the exploration was minimal and you could focus on absorbing the story without being worried about missing out on some Cool Crafting Mats™ but the designers seemed so terrified of simply letting you exist in the world without a carrot on a stick that it gets ruined with collectible trash.

@brad mentioned on the Astro Bot Cooling Springs video that he has a problem with his capture setup that causes it to randomly drop frames and yet on a video where people would be very interested in performance he doesn't think it warrants noting this :\

I put an SSD in my PS4 and replayed through Horizon Zero Dawn a few months ago. The load times here seemed a little faster, but not by much. I wonder if too fast load times can actually break games and they throttle the loading speed for stability.

They should have tried Jedi: Fallen Order, as that game in particular was hampered by loading/content streaming issues. With an SSD in a PS4 Pro I really didn't have all the issues that other people had with that game. I did still see some texture pops every now again, but no failures to load level geometry.

Shame that the Xbox Series X video is super long but this is very short.
