I agree with Jeff, Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol is indeed the high water wark of the series.

There's a bunch of SHMUPs where you can flip the screen and play in tate mode, as they call it. For your enjoyment @danryckert, here's one of my favorite SHMUP reviews ever.

Also, that goddamn soundtrack for A-Jax is awesome!

Space Police Galvan is also a Sentai series and I only know this because he was in either a Kamen Rider or Super Sentai crossover to promote the reboot at some point.

Hahahaha, that menu noise sounds like a dog or something. I'm cracking up!

MagMax looks really good for 1985. That's some buttery smooth scrolling and scaling on that parallax background.

It intrigues me that Jeff has played a lot of these games and hasn't at least picked up on what 'yes' and 'no' look like in Japanese. I mean, those 2 options must come up frequently enough? Ah well. Randomly guessing seemed to work out for him.

What catches my attention the most is watching these guys playing these games, and realize they had played them, all this obscure stuff, long ago. Totally out of my experience.

So is Galvan acutely a Space Sheriff Gavan game or just a game that was bashed off-of metal heroes?

I heard the last boss of MagMax is Solid Snake, but I'd get killed by some weak ass robots way before that.

@danryckert I actually played a decent amount of Sky Force on iOS. I think it's was free... It's also one of the only good vertical shooters I could find in the app store and used it for "research" into building my game =P

Those fucking quick-scroll menu sounds were the best.

I had a lot of good times with the home port of "Berzerk." I'm not sure if this existed in the arcade version, but on the VCS, you could actually shoot so that your bullets passed through the gap between a robot's head and its body.

There are some visual glitches throughout this video and some other recent ones as well. Didn't want to go without mentioning it, as I've seen it on more than one video and there might be some snag in the archiving workflow causing it.

There definitely needs to be some Berzerk gameplay on this webbing site. That game is so good.

What's the deal with the image corruption? It's all over all the recently recorded videos -- like, a majority of them since before E3.

So has anyone started a list of all the things that Dan thinks are cool, or a list of "cool guys"? I feel it would be forever long and just full of dudes wearing sunglasses.

Noticed that too, sometimes it looks like they've switched to a DivX codec from 1999 or something.

The Arcade Archives videos is one of my favourite recurring feature on the site.

@discodog: To be more accurate, Higgins was the majordomo of Robin's Nest, the estate on which Robin Masters allowed Magnum to take up residence.

Huh, they partially spoofed that Ninja-kun game in Game Center CX/Retro Game Challenge for the DS. "Robot Ninja Haggleman" was the title, I think. I really liked "Robot Ninja Haggleman 3", though. It was an awesome action platformer with wide open levels and tons of upgrades for your character.

Very excited to see another of these.

I am completely inexperienced with this Nichibutsu company; apparently they did ecchi PC games and F1 cars too? Wierd history man.

@discodog: It is revealed throughout the course of the show that Magnum believes that Higgins is actually Robin Masters, and Robin Masters is just a pen name. I don't think it is ever explicitly confirmed though.
