Oh cool, I wasn't expecting to see a QL of this. As a big shooter fan and someone who can spend 200+ hours on a good shooter working on high scores, this game is a great package and easily worth it at full price for people like me, but it will definitely will be a hard sell to most non-fans or people who wouldn't get that kind of replay value out of it. It also obviously doesn't look great graphically, but that's pretty typical these days since most modern shooters are very small-budget productions by necessity.

Incidentally, the PC version does support double-monitor mode for full 32:9 with no black bars, which is a fun spectacle that gets close to replicating the craziness of the arcade machine.

Man this game is fucking rad. Since this and nuclear throne have come out I havent been able to play anything else, their both so addicting. And this game has a TON of content compared to most shmups. 60 bucks is probably too much for most people but if you love these kind of games its a blast. Probably the most fun Ive had with a shmup since sturmwind.

Ps: the super wide screen is still super cool if you have a big-ass tv.

As someone who was alive and gaming during Outrun's release and Starfox - I'm gonna say Starfox is a lot better than Outrun. They might be tied for music however.

I'd like to get this game, but I just can't justify the boutique pricing on it. I assume the dev/pub are capitalizing on the hardcore fans who would jump on this at any price, but call me a bit too casual for that. I'll stick with Eschatos for the time being.

I think $60 is a reasonable price for this game, but I'm saying that as a fan of shooters and as someone who played quite a bit of Darius Gaiden on the Saturn. In terms of content, most shooters in the $15 range have about 6-8 stages, but it's looking like this game has 24 different stages between Original and Original EX Mode so in terms of quantity for price it seems to be about on par (though I suppose it could be argued that games with fewer stages often also offer multiple difficulty settings which can dramatically change said stages while Darius does not).

Plus, from what I understand of it Chronicle Mode functions by assigning players to groups (these are the 'cabinets') and unlocking various planets (the Steam page claims 3000+) once the group as a whole achieves certain scores or completes certain areas. Planets look to consist of various arrangements of bosses and stages in a similar fashion to Theatrhythm's 'Quest Medley' mode, though it looks like the length never exceeds 3 stages + 3 bosses and I believe the planets are custom-made rather than randomized. I cannot tell if the stages and bosses are simply scrambled around into various combinations, or if they actually make tweaks to the changes and/or add additional challenge requirements (ex: no powerups, one life only, etc).

So, as far as the genre goes, they have a good amount of content and utilize it in several ways for those looking for 'more to do' beyond replaying the standard game. The one downside I can see is the whole 3 stage thing; one of my favorite parts of Darius has always been the giant interconnected stage map and breaking it up into two separate maps, each of which have three different starting positions, looks weird and really limits both the length of and the choices you can make during a run.

I hold the fire button, it's one of those shmups where the quicker your shot lands the quicker your ship fires another one, so if you hold fire and get close to enemies you fire super fast, faster than you can tap.
Also the burst is different on certain ships, but the laser burst can be used to destroy most enemies projectiles, planting the burst emplacement and angling it to defend you and kill enemies is the strategy i use.

And I'm sure you know this, but for others, you can also counter enemies' Burst beams (the big red lasers) with your own Burst for ships that have one. It's important for scoring, but it's also just fun to do.

I think the Steam page explains what the cabinets do, basically the arcade machine has an unlock system and because arcade machines are used by more than one person it simulates the "everybody's progressing the same system" aspect via the internet. Everybody on one cabinet shares unlocks.

Maybe it's my old-man eyes, but this looks like "Hyper-Seizure-Flashy-Screen: The Game". I guess it's good that your shots can "block" at least some of the enemy shots, because the enemy shots aren't distinct enough from your own to actually, you know, dodge them.

That said, the movement is as smooth as butter. That looks good. But yes, $60 seems a really high asking price -- $30-ish would seem much more reasonable (and it's weird that a lot of gamers seem to mention $15 as the only alternative to the $60 price point).

The price is reasonable considering that this is one of the first times we're getting the game at the same time as Japan. It has an insane amount of content for what it is.

This game is the equivalent to $75, SEVENTY FIVE DOLLARS digital on the European Playstation Store. Even if the game was amazing it's not getting bought until it's in a 75% off sale.

My two favorite dumb Dan questions are "Is this ska/jazz/etc?" and when he asks Jeff if he's played some old, usually arcade, game.

People like to dump on the post-64 Star Fox games, but I think Star Fox Command for the DS is kinda great. I'd have to play Adventures again to remember if that game was anything other than a passable Zelda clone (that got the Star Fox name bolted on once it moved from N64 to Gamecube) and I remember thinking Assault was kinda garbage when it came out.

Oh right, what were we talking about? This game? It's a shmup. $60 for these sorts of games is a little rich for my blood.

That Genesis port of Darius II, Sagaia, is my favorite of the series (and the most common reason I still hook up my Genesis). Getting rid of the widescreen gimmick really improved it, they tightened the control and enemy patterns, and I even prefer the console version of the soundtrack. For me it's definitely up there with Galaga, Battle Garegga, Sine Mora, and R-Type Delta as a favorite of the genre. Darius Gaiden for the Saturn was also fantastic, but I was never much impressed by the original Darius, Darius Twin, G-Darius, or the original Dariusburst. Metal Black and Border Down were more appealing to me.

This game is huge improvement from the original Dariusburst I played on PSP so far (I bought the $40 Vita version) but I am not sure I want to drop another $40 on the Steam version yet.

Outrun + Star Fox = Galaxy Force II (that 3DS port is probably the best 3D game or movie experience I've ever had)
