DiRT Rally (my first foray into the series) challenged and engaged me like no other driving game has, so I am really looking forward to trying out this one.

Haven't played another game like Rally. The tracks feel like a character, an adversary you are struggling to best. Every corner is like a new puzzle you need to figure out. After playing Rally, other driving games don't make me feel like I'm really 'driving' anymore. It's like you're not trying to race these other drivers to see who can cross the finish line first, you're just trying to beat the track and that's a much more interesting challenge to me than what most other racing games provide.

I am looking forward to this game still being challenging, but a bit easier. I still have Rally to go back if I need that most hardcore of fixes.

I was genuinely concerned about the handling model from watching this quick look (I know racing and speaking is hard), but after having played the game on Simulation for an hour now, I can happily say that it feels great.

It's definitely not as hardcore as Rally, even with all assists off, but honestly I never really came to the DiRT games for a hardcore simulation. I respect DiRT Rally a lot, but I'm happy this is a little more forgiving. I've already had a tyre randomly explode, as well as brake issues (on a clean run, nonetheless), and so far I'm finding the balance to be just right for me.

She's in the studio making sure the video capture is working properly so the rest can do their thing.

Awe I was really hoping that a return to a proper DiRT sequel would mean they would go back to super cool looking UIs but this UI looks really bog standard. Guess the cool UI guy left Codemasters.

I'll accept Vinny not knowing about GymKata, but I feel like that;s the exact kind of schlock Alex should have known about, especially with his time at Screened. Maybe it's more of a Rorie thing. RIP Box Office Bomb.

I appreciate that Alex seems to be happy to explain things to Dan that he doesn't understand in a very pleasant way without being condescending. Good guy Alex, checks in again.

Was funny to see them play in Hell, small town next to where I live. There is the world rallycross championship here this weekend, probably why it was featured in that gamemode.

Huh, after looking at the Steam reviews turns out they aren't great because a lot of people have found the simulation mode with all assists off is (very much, depending on your opinion) lacking what Dirt Rally did.

Ah, and what's made it worse is that the developer said stuff like "you can switch to the Sim Handling mode and have an experience that is even closer to the real deal than we managed to achieve with DiRT Rally" and obviously hasn't delivered, which is disappointing and at most, a lie.

"They did not explain this very well"

Well, they did, but it was in the loading screen that everyone talked over.

This looks okay. I'll give it a try if I ever get tired of Dirt Rally. That game is so hard that you could play it forever trying to win.

Watched more of the video. One of the hardest rules of rally is that you've got to go slow to go fast.

What, he doesn't know what the joker is? He said it himself, he's a fan of the Dirt games and he's played most of them, how do you not know?

Guh, I probably shouldn't be getting upset at this. I guess I just miss Drew for these.

Also, the game showed a movie explaining what the joker is.

Also, Vinny told him what it was.

Also Dan (DAN!) told him what it was.

It's not like this wasn't entertaining, but i think it did pretty much absolutely nothing to inform me about this game. I think it's okay to have the mindset of 'We don't really know anything about this game/genre, nor are we interested in figuring it out; but we think it's a cool thing to mess about in and have some fun with', but people kind of expect these videos to have some kind of useful information in them on whether to buy the game. Perhaps label them as something else instead of Quicklooks? They'll still be watched, but viewers might know what they are in for.

What happened to all the slick menus that they put into the previous games?

My thoughts too. Last three Dirt games (especially Dirt 2) had incredible menus/UI. Dirt 4's front end is so painfully functional, it saddens me so.

I know that a few people were put off by the menus in the previous Dirt games and that the game was presented as something a lot more bro-y than rally driving typically is but it gave the game a vibe and personality. Dirt: Rally and by extension Dirt 4 both have a very clinical presentation. They're there to get you into the driving and nothing more. I haven't played 4 but the music in Rally also really left me wanting. It's just a very cold and stand-offish game in that regard. I think the presentation is like that of a business card. Dirt 1 - 3 would be very flashy. They'd probably have some kind of gimmick associated with them. Dirt: Rally and 4 would be very plain. It'd be the type of business card you'd see in American Psycho. It has the information you need and little else.

Vinny's cockpit origin story was very obviously fabricated to me and I was laughing hysterically as Dan ate it up. I'm into planes though, I guess I could see how a complete aviation layperson might believe it - even though the idea that anyone would use a chicken for testing pertinent to humans is silly.

That said, the origin of the term *is* chicken related; check it out on Wikipedia.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. I also loved Dirt Rally after investing the time to get the most reward from it, and this one is a little more approachable. My only gripe is not enough locations... I think Dirt Rally had more than 5.

I really enjoyed Dirt Rally. There was a beautiful simplicity there, and the challenge of it almost made it feel like a racing rogue-like to me (though you could re-start if you messed up). I put 20 hours into that game and I never got to the point where I could even reliably use anything other than the low-powered FWD cars. I've heard this is a bit easier, but at the same time I kind of want to put more time into Dirt Rally and git gud with the higher powered cars.

@nonesun: I think you hit the nail on the head. Dirt Rally was really engaging for me for a while. When I was on, I'd enter a flow state, receive the navigator's instructions, and nail the corners without even thinking about them.

@spiketail: GBW had a Logitech G27 for a long while, that's what the iRacing QL and some UPFs were done with. When Vinny moved east, he bought a Thrustmaster T300RS with T3PA pedals and TH8A shifter (that's over $500) with their GBE budget for the American Truck Simulator QL. THEN Thrustmaster - just out of "hey, your site is big, we have too many of these old big wheels, we'll send you one" - send GBW a Thrustmaster T500 that they never used, I think.

I played with all 3 of those and GBE have the best wheel, plus there is no better game for using an H-Pattern shifter than a game with old rally cars.
