Doom 3 was a terrible game. When people think of doom, what they think of are huge piles of bad guys you mow down with incredible firepower. They do not think of a boring, shallow, survival horror game. If they wanted to make a boring, shallow survival horror game, they should have called it "Captain Growly crawls through generic industrial zones and gets jumped every time he picks up a medkit".

Maybe that wouldn't have fit on the box.

And its not like i dislike survival horror games, i love them! Doom 3 fails as a horror game because it's boring and shallow. There's no inventory beyond the piles of ammo you sit on, there's no real story to speak of, there's no sense of pacing or suspense. Monsters just appear out of nowhere to kick your ass! The fact that you couldn't see them because of poor design choices does not a survival horror game make!

Because i was a broke collage student at the time, I had just finished System Shock 2 for the first time before upgrading my computer and trying out Doom 3. If you want a night and day difference on how to do story and suspense, try that. System Shock 2 was so ugly that it could cause random passerby to faint from sickness, but that game is scary as heck, despite the fact you could actually see what was happening!

@super2j: Hm, so it seems. Havent checked it in a while. I was able to buy it off of steam a while ago but you're right. I guess its to not leech sales from BFG Edition. That kinda sucks considering the downsides of the update.

Excellent quick look, and I especially liked the fact they jumped straight into playing the game, rather than 5 minutes of talking in the menus. I really enjoyed Doom 3 when it came out, but with the big collection of games I still need to play from this year, I won't be replaying this game again.

Sounds like Patrick might enjoy some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

After replaying DOOM, I kinda get it now that I didn't as a kid. Doom is scary because it's fucking relentless. Doom doesn't give a shit if you're low on ammo, it's going to open that monster closet anyway because fuck you. Doom is a very fast pace, circle strafing, shotgun shooting experience. I honestly don't think you can replicate THAT experience in today's gaming market. For Doom to be a thing these days, it needs to tap into that always running, don't stop for nothing mentality.
