Golden Sun (at least the original, not sure if Lost Age or Dark Dawn do this) is one modern-ish RPG that won't auto-attack enemies if you kill one with a turn queued up. Super fucking annoying.

JRPGs need decent battle music, dammit.

I'm actually digging the music. It's pretty spot on.

The battles happen so frequently that they would've been far better off not having separate battle music at all. It's the constant starting and stopping that's so annoying. "Dungeon Music BATTLE MUSIC Dungeon Music BATTLE MUSIC Dungeon Mu-BATTLE MUSIC Du-BATTLE MUSIC"

I agree that how it started and ended all the time got somewhat annoying, but I really liked the actual music.

I want to play this, but I live in Europe, so I don't get half the games that comes to psn in US. When will sony learn from steam?... The developer said that book one would come soon to Europe, but that was in march/april.

It's way too claustrophobic. Too many characters overlapping during battles, and every path is very small. This is trying to invoke Chrono Trigger while failing in every way.

And if your faux-16-bit game is having frame rate issues, you are a bad programmer.

Anyone know of any PS1 RPGs (Not SNES or SNES-Ports) that looks similar to this? This QL is really scratching my itch to play an actual RPG from that era again.

Only one I can think of is Alundra, but I played that recently (great game!).

This looks like shit. Even for a tribute to 16-bit RPGs. Hell, you guys might as well Quick Look proper (also usually shitty) JRPGs if you're going to be showing off games like this. Just because it's indie that doesn't mean it deserves the attention. At least those Neptunia or whatever games are fucking insane. Or I don't know, fanwankery like Project X Zone?

Too many enemy encounters and the combat does nothing for me. I like their mode 7 overworld though.

So it's just Chrono Trigger worship.

Bleagh, I can't stand the music in this game. The "theme" is repeated too much in different forms and its mind numbing. Different types of music entirely rather than reiterating the theme constantly would be better. And that battle music keeps hitting me over the head. Ugh!

@arbitrarywater: Evoland did that and it looked terrible and wasn't very fun to play. The joke wasn't enough to justify shitty controls and unfun gameplay.

I got the impression that Evoland was a 15 minute joke stretched out to a 5 hour game, but what I really mean is that someone should go all the way with parodying PS1 JRPGs. I'm tired of dumb meta jokes about spoony bards and bad translations, I want dumb meta jokes about FMV cutscenes.

He said in some comments on the US PS Blog that when he submitted it to PEGI he did something wrong so he had to change something and resubmit it, then theres the usual waiting for QA.

At least you guys can hold your better PS+ IGC games over us.

Yeah, every time I play one of these JRPG tribute games, I enjoy myself until I remember that the music wasn't done by Nobuo Uematsu, and then I turn them off. Most of those old JRPGs had music written by people that were slumming it hardcore (at the time), and listening to stuff churned out by someone trying to emulate them without really understanding what they were doing is actively painful to me.

I hope they will never learn from Steam, Steam is heaps and bounds worse in terms of region locking.
With PSN you can create accounts for each region, just Google a valid address for the region, and buy PSN cards for that region online.

There is really nothing stopping you from getting these games you want from the US/JP PSN store.

With Steam you have to use VPN, or other means, to spoof your IP address and that can get your account banned. But otherwise you will always be locked to the offerings of your region and some regions don't offer a ton of games or you only get them censored, if you buy them trough Steam.

Yeah, that irritated me as well. It just seems like this game has way too many damn battles.

Also, I really wasn't a fan of how the in-battle menus are just white text floating in the game world. I'd prefer a more opaque UI.

That is a very salient point. I'm all for a longer Quick Look of interesting games, but I do kinda miss the days of 15-25 minute Quick Looks of games that...deserve 15-25 minute Quick Looks.

This is one such game.

battle system straight out of Chrono Trigger, especially the "Helios" spin move chrono does.
