Man, it's like the people that made this have the same exact nostalgic memories as me.

I had the same reaction when I first saw Freedom Planet, I'll have to pick this up during the next Steam sale.

Downtown Peter Brown. Really though. Why now? If nothing else, this game gives way and opens doors to even grander sonic fan-fiction.

Try the demo on their page! It's a fun game imo.
There are difficulty spikes around the boss fights tho. Not a *perfect* game!

Insanity! I used to be able to keep up with the Quick Looks... now there are simply TOO MANY. Cease and desist all your good work immediately, Giant Bomb.

But seriously thanks.

Man, it's like the people that made this have the same exact nostalgic memories as me. The way everything looks. The way the level breaks apart and pieces slide around. The crystal cave area. It also tells me that an adult without the same nostalgia will probably be very hard-pressed to find this very enjoyable.

It didn't have a failed kickstarter at all. It had a very successful Kickstarter, raking in more than 10 times what they asked for and also, it IS coming to console, a Wii U version was announced not long ago...

This reminds me a lot of Pulseman as well.

Anyone else ever played Pulseman? It's kinda rad.

This is exactly whats I've wanted from sonic since sonic 3& knuckles, Just Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as main characters Amy and the Chaotix can show up but no one else and I'd give Sega my money.

But they keep changing and add the wrong things :(

@dan_citi: I second this, I see Sonic Advance 1 as the true Sonic the Hedgehog 4 :) and well worth a play-through

I'm glad to see that Freedom Planet has been getting some more attention in general; I picked it up when it came out and loved it, but it really did seem to fly under the radar for a lot of people and only now seems to be getting noticed. Also, Carol has a powerup which Lilac doesn't get which makes her quite a bit more powerful (Drew literally jumps over it at 18:36).

As far as Freedom Planet having multiple routes goes, I think this is the biggest thing which it gets right which most modern Sonic games get wrong. Genesis platformers in general, and especially Sonic, tended to have big, branching stages with new types of platforms and mechanics constantly being introduced (as opposed to the SNES, which tends to have platformers with more more linear, controlled stages and more of a focus on powerup variety).

On another note, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more videos in general of potentially-good games which came out a while ago and were just missed by everyone. Perhaps they could be called Under The Radar or 'Overlooks' (as a bit of a pun on Quick Looks) and be similar to Patrick's Worth Playing segment except with a video-oriented focus exclusively on older commercial games which got overlooked on Steam or consoles (or which are only available on services like Desura which are themselves mostly overlooked).

Drew should totally play thru Sonic Advance on his GameBoy micro, then pop it into a GameBoy Player for a Bombastica, it's a great game.

Why the hell does it have bad performance here? On my average PC it runs great.

This. I haven't had any problems with performance or slowdown whatsoever.

Hiya Drew, thanks for the quick look! I took my time to post about some cool current Sonic games, official or fan, that you might want to look into. Hopefully you'll find something interesting!

Want Sonic with a bit more (perhaps even Metroid like elements) then you should try the fan game Sonic Chrono Adventure :)

Also Sonic Generations is a fantastic game and well worth a look (note the PC version is very good)

Neat! Looks like they took Sonic and made a good platformer with it. Seems to get away from the whole "run non-stop because it's a Sonic game" thing. Maybe it's level design, maybe it's purely from not being Sonic, maybe it's because you're not slow as fuck coming out of a stop.

The camera is definitely too close though. Like, frustratingly close.

But yeah, this looks fun!

Did you guys done ANY research?

Failed Kickstarter? From when you call 800% funding a failed Kickstarter?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/galaxytrail/freedom-planet-high-speed-platform-game/description

Maybe the fact that the game started life as a Sonic "fangame" and was rebooted to star original characters led to the confusion.

Either way, they're giving a spotlight to a neat-looking game that has received little-to-no attention from most game sites, so... who really cares if Drew didn't have all the facts exactly right? (To be fair, the Kickstarter was asking for $2000, which is absolutely nothing as far as game development goes, so they probably set the goal super low so they would be almost guaranteed to get funded, and then some).

No. This is more like looking for 51-100% accurate information. Shit that would be figured out by a minute of searching online before recording. Maybe it's too much games journalistic to do, like all the other times QLs have wrapped with no knowledge of when and how and how much when it's been just a search away.

Shape up, staff.

I remember sending Patrick a message several months ago, asking him to check this game out, as it seemed to just fly under the radar of most big game review sites. Sadly, I think he was in the process of wrapping things up before moving on from Giant Bomb, so he didn't get a chance to check it out.

While Shovel Knight is an amazing game, I feel it's unfair it became an indie darling while this gem went mostly unnoticed. Amazing game, if you can tolerate the Sunday morning cartoon cheese cutscenes. (Play the arcade mode if it bothers you too much.)

Also, I was really bummed that Drew managed to miss the coolest thing about playing as Carol: Riding her bike. He literally jumped over the gas can that summons it. ;(

Freedom Planet is sooooo goooooooood.

Glad to see a quick look of it on the site, even if it's 9 months later.

I guess it's coming out to Wii U soon?
