I'm enjoying the game, but it feels overly focused on trying to constantly maintain banter, to the detriment of whatever's happening at the time. Self awareness is good, but there's too much of it IMO. It completely strips any agency out of the context of what's going on. Also, Marcus' dialogue is really grating. Like really really grating. I get what they were going for, I know why they did it, but fuck man, it's pretty jarring.

Anyone know what the pricing situation was? Was at checkout on Microsoft store for the ultimate edition (said $79) than before it finished it went back up to $99. During the quicklook they imply the cost was lower than Forza but it seems to be jumping around a lot.

Not worth reposting all of what I said so I will just say I am very disappointed at how similar this is to Gears of Wars of last generation. Passing on this one, I want new experiences and it seems only VR is going to give that this generation.

I was rally hoping they'd do something new like what Sony decided with the upcoming God of War game. However this just looks like Gears of war from 2006, they've not attempted to do something interesting with the gameplay at all.

I was done with third person cover based shooters by 2008.... I'm gonna give this one a pass.

+ Everything still looks so fake, all made waist high, nothing felt like it had any weight to it, which ruins the impact of that weather flying stuff around and for some reason they decided to put in cutscenes.......... why? Just keep me as my character, the cutscenes seem really jarring, Half-life figured that out 18 years ago.

I hate all the story crap they tried to add with 2 and 3 and this is no better. It's not well done, I don't care about any of the characters, I just want them to be simple like Gears 1 if they cannot write a good story. I wish they had the talent of Naughty Dog when it comes to the story... but they don't.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as they're making entertaining, quality games.

Having a real blast with Gears 4, to the point where it's kind of a surprise. I haven't played a Gears game since 3 first came out, and I was kind of skeptical about going back to the series. I wasn't sure if it would still feel good to play. Thankfully, it does. The game feels really great on a mouse and keyboard, which was really surprising. I had my 360 controller plugged in and ready to go, and I just started playing on mouse and keyboard just to see how it felt. I'm in Act III now and I haven't touched the controller yet.

I also want to note that on my i7 4790k with 32GB of RAM and a 980, I'm getting a real solid frame rate on a mix of Ultra and High settings downsampling 1440p to 1080p. Benchmark gave me an average of about 125fps. Not sure if it's quite that high in actual gameplay, but I'm on a 144hz monitor and the game feels smooth as butter. It's definitely above 60 at all times. This is a really impressive release, and if Microsoft can hold other devs to this standard for future UWP releases, they could really have something there.

Looking forward to Jeff's turn as the new frontman for Body Count!

That seems like a very skewed perspective. I don't think I've seen that consensus anywhere. People prefer the PS4 this generation around, no?

Personally, I'm just happy I'm getting more games on my PC. Even though I didn't open the Windows store once yet.

game actually looks top notch on PC, and has a ton of options. Shame its the same exact aged, boring gameplay from 10 years ago and hasn't evolved at all.

Wow, looking at that map selection screen, I never knew Gears maps were that boringly designed. They all have the same basic shape.

Eh, I think there are people on both sides of the fence here. I tend to prefer Sony exclusives, I like attempts at different stuff even if the results aren't as even overall, but I see why people prefer more tried and true stuff like MS tends to put out.

I think what is happening here is that most of the GB staff tends to prefer the MS exclusive games (this and last gen at least) to the Sony ones so the discourse on the rest of the site tends to follow along, either out of attracting like minded people or being a main information source.

i'm hoping they go all out with the jeff/dan quick looks while they can.

Looks like more Gears which isn't terrible but hey I played through three really solid Gear games already. Will pick this up sometime down the road, maybe in a Scorpio bundle.

Completed the campaign yesterday, it's pretty good and enjoyed it throughout. The banter is quite funny in places and didn't think it took away from what was going on. It is basically more Gears, but it's been awhile since 3 so not necessarily a bad thing. Will be jumping into Horde later

I imagine that we both have the same wish of these two doing as many quick looks as possible as a duo before Dan moves and starts work at GBeast. I'm also really hoping that Dan and Drew will make some MGScanlon type content before Dan leaves.

I see this and suddenly I want another Dead Space game, more than usual. And not because it's October, and not (just) because I've been replaying the Dead Space games again.

Totally had the same experience with Gears MP as Jeff, the shotgun party is kind of a bummer.

Don't worry, I'm sure someone is working on Dead Space Trilogy Remastered somewhere.

@sammo21: Uncharted 4? Last of Us Remastered? Bloodborne(basically another Dark Souls)? Ratchet and Clank? Little Big Planet 3? Killzone 4? Infamous 3? But you are right. Microsoft making a new Halo, a new Gears game, and more Forza games is them going back to the well one too many times.

If you're going to mention those titles, you should also state that Nintendo is no longer allowed to make Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Metroid, or Star Fox games.

God that horde mode looks fantastic. Big improvements over 3. Can't wait to finish the campaign and get in on the fun.

I actually am kind of bummed out by it. Been a while since I played Horde, but I remember you would pick a strategic spot, fortify it, and hunker down and hold off the waves. Now since you have to grab those power points the fortification stuff seems largely useless.

So card packs are here to stay, huh? I should really check these games out some day.
