@oceanripple: Drew is a racing guy (primarily Formula One,) but yeah i know what you mean though. They need an actual "petrolhead" who's really into cars and loves motorsport.

That Pistonheads logo really threw me for a second there. I forgot they had some tie in with the game.

This is out? I thought it came out in the fall. There's a surprising number of games that I want this summer. This is normally my "catch up on shit" time. I guess I still can. I don't have to buy games within 3 months of release.

I tried GRID 2 on the PS3 a while back. It's okay but I stopped playing it partly because there was way too much loading, particularly when it came to picking new cars or customizing cars. I miss the days of RalliSport Challenge when picking cars, restarting a race, etc was fast and easy.

I dont know about this, it looks like a competent racing game but not all that interesting. I think Codemasters has really lost their way since around Dirt 3, the quality of their games just doesnt seem to be as strong as their earlier titles. It feels like they have really watered down the Dirt series from its roots, Grid 2 just looks boring, and I really dont understand why this Grid game exists. I think CM needs to take a step back and reevaluate their approach to racing games as of late

Oh man the open wheel race at the end gave me an interesting idea. Make a rally car racer that would have some kind of companion app so you have Player 1 driving the car and then Player 2 would have the map and track info on their phone or tablet (obviously removing that info from P1's view). I dunno if anyone has done anything like that yet, but I think that could be real cool.

So, is this worth a buy? I've been looking for something similar to GT/Forza for PC, and this is the closest so far. the lack of "car collection" is a bummer, though.

Need for Speed Shift 2 is likely your best option still if that's the style you like. Personally for me, I still like Dirt 2. :/

In the Gran Turismo 6 Quick Look I remember the sentiment being "meh, if you like offroad there is DiRT, if you like F1 there are dedicated F1 racers" etc. I wonder what's with the change of heart.

Wow those are the cockpits? They couldn't even be bothered to make higher resolution textures or dials that work so they just blurred it the fuck out.

Maybe for games that hey do a quick look for which are built around a topic/subject that the guys don't have much experience in, they can invite outsiders to sit in on the quick look and provide insight and a judgement from someone that knows the subject.

I genuinely had to check if this was a PS Vita game after that first city race; something about the reflections on the cars and the way the read lights look on them was just... bad. The derby level looked more in line with "last gen" but man, what a weird detail.

Anyways, hopefully the PC version looks better, at least.

What's the point of even putting that shitty cockpit view in, if you're just going to half arse it? You're only going to piss off those who care about it to begin with even more.

This seems like a product Codemasters slapped together after GRID 2 was so disappointing and felt they could improve for a release this year while next year I'm sure we'll see a next gen DIRT or something.

You think racing games are a problem, try serious simulators. The amount of cluelessness in reviews or just their absence is baffling. It's like this kind of approximate garbage is the only thing that matters.

/rant

To be fair, it's not easy to be into this. It's so generic and cynical with the blurry cockpits. Codemasters really doesn't give a shit anymore. At least the F1 games are comprehensive, even though they're garbage as well, if you ask me.

Assetto Corsa is on sale, by the way.

Yeah, it's nuts how quickly you adjust. These games already have glaring graphical "problems" for me now, that I'd have been more than happy with or would have just totally ignored last year.

Cool. I didn't know this was PS3/360 generation game. I may pick it up now. Kinda in a racing game drought here.

edit --- yeah this looks good enough for a purchase for me. Will definitely get. Also that cockpit is pretty hilariously half assed. It's almost like they put that in for spite. I don't use cockpit view anyway so it's a non-issue for me. Waiting about hoping that the new VR stuff gets to the point that cockpit view can be done in a way that at least partially mimics the field of view you actually have in a car.

Fortunately this is going to sell poorly, and Codemasters seem to have designed with that understanding, so it will be a discount product very quickly.

Also also, when is new Dirt? Give new Dirt. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Quoting this for anyone with a PC, who is considering buying a simulation racing game. For those that are new to 'true' racers: once AC has downloaded, choose a BMW M3, choose Magione as a track, turn up the volume, turn off the HUD, choose the cockpit camera, change to manual transmission, and go for a drive.

I was just thinking about this earlier today when I tried to drive a couple races on Forza 4. After playing Forza 5 to death and going back to 4 I instantly couldn't believe how bad it looks now. I did one lap and had to turn it off and put Forza 5 in. It was like during last gen when I'd look back at a PS2 game that didn't hold up visually.

This happened to me when I built a gaming computer in 2011. Certain exclusives held up to a point but the cross platform stuff just looked like garbage and the whole 60 fps thing.

I think the AC hype is ridiculous, but it is quite nice, feels authentic enough and can be played with a controller, unlike other sim-oriented racers.

Yep I started building my PCs in 2004 and I've always tried to absolutely play cross platform games on PC when the option's there. I really hate when a cross plat game comes out that I've been looking forward to and the PC version is poorly optimized or just broken.

Thirty-two minutes of street racing and drift racing (the only racing that Jeff likes). The last eight minutes shows one open-wheel race (i.e., throwing a bone to those 'other' people). Then we hear "...and that's Grid Autosport". There's a lot more to this game than that. A very poor quick look that makes this game look like a Grid 2 copy and paste.

Drew should have done this one solo.

I see where you're coming from. While I've enjoyed most of the stuff that Jeff and Drew put out over the week this is kind of a weak quick look for this game. It seemed like Drew spent way more time in the menus than driving which is what this game is purely about. I also think it would have highly benefited them to show the PC version. On PC it's like a totally different game, actually looks stunning.

I felt similarly when they looked at Forza Motorsport 5. It seemed like Jeff was so set on complaining about micro transactions which are completely optional in that game and drivatars instead of focusing on the gameplay itself which I think is some of the best in a current racer.

The cockpit view looks like the one modders managed to enable in Grid 2, but I'm fine with that. At least they made the car interior darker so you can't see that instruments don't work. The important part to me is that I can play in it first person view, because third person views really throws me off in just about every game. I guess I really need those visual reference points and sense of depth you get from a first person perspective, because I honestly can't stand third person games, with a very small list of exceptions.

Assesto Corsa is a ridiculously terrible game on a gamepad, most people DON'T have racing steering wheels and for those people this game is great.

Even F1 2013 is way too steering wheel focused a game. If wheel users are 3+ seconds a lap faster than controller users, then controller users shouldn't even buy the game.

You can't have it both ways, either all the steering wheel people complain it's to arcade or the controller people complain that it's totally unplayable.

Makes me sick that assesto corsa has a big picture of a gamepad on their store page, NOBODY without a steering wheel should pay a dime for that game. They are trying to subsidize the cost for wheel users by getting controller users to buy it

After the failure Grid 2 was, this one is way better.

You guys aren't good enough at driving games to judge whether the PS3 controller is good or bad. The best controller ever made is the dualshock 1, 2 is almost identical and while 3 is not as good it is still far better than a 360 controller for steering with the left stick. 360 doesn't have any smoothness, too much spring.

@cannibalferox: The whole concept behind Giant Bomb is that the video presentations, especially the Quick Looks, are more personalized, informal and generally unprepared. They are not meant to be comprehensive objective reviews.
