Quick Look: Killer Instinct

I was just thinking it would be a good marketing move for MS to donate a few hundred Xbox Ones to EVO and offer them free versions of whatever games are getting played that year for the life time of the consoles. Establishing Xbox as the console of choice for fighting games this gen could be a major win for MS long term. It certainly would not hurt to have everyone watching EVO streams seeing the games running on Xbox.

I played this a few weeks ago and it seemed pretty cool. With no Geometry Wars equivalent for Xbox One launch is this the secret-best launch game?

This games looks good visually but man the rest of the asethitic and all that just isn't for me fighting game wise.

Best launch game, yes. Secret, no.

I'm way into this, but 8 character seasons is too little- I would have paid more for more characters up front. Maybe another original character and a KI2 representative.

Thanks to GB, I'm now planning to get both consoles next year lol.

They need an arcade style front menu and character selection screen. A supreme victory animation. A louder heavier blown-out soundtrack to attract people toward the cabinet. And fake Ryu shouldn't be the frontman. This is all wrong.

A local game store still has a working Killer Instinct cabinet in it. I've never actually played it, but I still love watching the attract mode. Also, that game still looks really good on a real CRT monitor, with authentic scan lines and blur.

I did have similar issues while trying to use the site's own HTML 5 and Progressive players, it cut to black and then stopped entirely about 25 minutes in. Just use the Youtube player for all non-subscriber content, or straight up download the videos until they fix that stuff, new working video players should be here any year now.

Game looks cool, the anal retentive attitude that microsoft is acting towards showing the ui is dumb.

This looks really cool. I remember loving the shit out of the first game on the SNES. I had the Killer Cuts CD and everything and I genuinely enjoyed it. I remember the black SNES cart being the most badass thing ever. Orchid to my memory was the only character that could pull an infinite combo as well.

Man, the music dropping its beats to the hits during the Ultra finishers is so gloriously dumb. Looking forward to getting an Xbox One later next year after all the inevitable release console issues have been mostly fixed.

And KI Classic visually looks alright to me...not as bad as the guys are making it out to be. The character models actually look pretty nice.

I don't know how else to say this so I'll just say it: I think the female characters in this are lazily designed in the way that I find increasingly tiring in a lot of video games given how much it's been done with little meaning. It would be one thing say it's legacy but the one new fighter is a sexy spider lady showing a ton of skin and it makes me wonder how game developers managed to do it again unironically.

I would pay any price for this game except buying an XBox one.

Shame. Looks like a great game. Really retains what was so cool about the original KI. I played that in the arcade so much.

Speaking of which, they messed up on that arcade emulator for KI. All the moves were on the sides of the screen. Would have been an easy thing for them to do and not need to add a menu for it. The nostalgia factor would have made it cool. Granted, though, I don't know how much of the screen that would take, but I would think it could work. Shame they didn't think of that.

@jeff@brad if you fail to properly finish a combo with an ender, the announcer doesn't say the word "combo", he just says "extreme" or "killer" or whatever as an audio cue.

I still don't get Patrick's hatred for Silent Hill: Homecoming. It's nowhere near as good as the older games, but it didn't seem that bad. The designs were more creative than Downpour that just felt like a bunch of zombies invaded Silent Hill, and I'd still rather play it than The Room. Homecoming always came off to me as a game that would have been received much better if it wasn't titled Silent Hill.

Why's there so much hate for this QL? Patrick said one thing about Silent Hill, and the Patrick haters come out in full force; Jeff said he didn't like original KI cause of the visuals/combo system, and everyone jumps on him for liking this one. It's okay for people to have opinions you don't agree with. You don't have to defend these older games from game reviewers when they say something bad about them.

I saw everything this game had to offer in two minutes of this QL....48 minute QL?

As a person who knows very little about fighting games, you could have either told me that this is the best fighting game ever or the worst fighting game ever and I would have believed you.

That was a great first match that Brad and Jeff had. Just shows how you can jump right in and have a good time and be competitive.

I think the original Killer Instinct still looks pretty good and I will defend it to the death. But anyways yeah the music stuff is cool, the tutorial is damn awesome and it just looks like a blast to play. I hope this does well because I want Seasons 2 & 3.

Alright if Jeff was won over by this game and he hated the old games, I'm gonna freakin love it. Ugggggh regretting not getting an xbox.

It is pretty close to being the worst game in the series. Every single Silent Hill after 4 is the worst game in the series. None of them are good games. I think it's different when you play, or atleast it is for resogun. I had trouble following the resogun quicklook, but playing it gave me no issues. This game might be similar?

Boy, this game looked boring as fuck at EVO. Not even gonna lie, I was more than ready to write it off. I'm not sure what they changed or if it just happened to have a bad showing at EVO, but it looks a hell of a lot better these days. I daresay I'd actually get an Xbox One specifically for this if it had more characters.

I realize this isn't a universally popular opinion, but I personally really miss Quick Looks with Patrick.

Hmm...this actually looks pretty decent. Good job on Microsoft on making something out of a property many thought was confined to nadir of gaming relevance.
