Quick Look: NASCAR: Unleashed

I would play this in an arcade. If I ever went to an arcade.

As a cheap XBLA/PSN game, I'm sure someone would have found this pretty fun. As a proper retail game, even for only $40.. why did they bother?

Holy shit does this look bad. In every single way possible. Probably the shittiest thing I've seen in months. And I'm basing that on this QL alone.

I imagine this is what Blur looked like when it was still proof-of-concept.

NASCAR: Unleashed looks like it was leashed by a $100 budget.

NASCAR Rumble for the PS1 is still the ultimate arcade-y NASCAR experience.

This is a $40 retail game? A $15 XBLA price is too much.

Man I wish this was like Nascar Rumble on the PSX.

Damn... this looks and reminds me of Destruction Derby 2 on the PSX... Only that game was good... this doesn't look like it is so much.

Wow, there's very little distinguishing this from a PS2 or even late PSX game visually. Slightly higher texture resolution for the road, and I suppose the polygon count for the cars was too much for the PS1 (looks comparable to some PS2 or Xbox racing games though, except those generally had better shading), but damn, most of the lightning effects (except for the specularity map for the road) look extremely 1999, especially the lens flare, most notably the issues it has with disappearing when the sun is behind something.

I like the idea behind this - sims are stupid, so Activision is looking for thier "WWE All Stars" or "NFL Blitz" for the NASCAR license; there's definitely room for that. But man, this thing looks like it was made in 8 months. It looks like a Dreamcast game, and the tracks have so little to them apparently. I've seen more complex tracks in N64 games (like Beetle Adventure Racing or Rush 2049). Where are the shortcuts? Why can't you boost through walls? The sweet jumps? There's so little to this package; it's a shame.

Activision has the right idea here, and they're loaded with COD cash, so why does this come off as so cheap? They need to seriously try and make a Burnout-quality arcadey racer here, not this budget thing.

I am still waiting for Ridge Racer Unbounded then, it seems. But maybe - MAYBE - I'll chuck this in my Gamefly GameQ.

I wonder if Brad And Ryan were playing this game shirtless, with a couple of Budweisers.

Even people that like Nascar wouldn't want to play this game. That's saying a lot, considering the shit they enjoy.

It boggles my mind that something like this could be put on store shelves. This game is uglier than hell and seems incredibly shallow for its asking price. Activision clearly has no shame.

It looks like a game from 2001 or something... and a kind of fun game from 2001 at that.. If it was a cheap downloadable it could have been interesting.

Wow! If I didn't know better I'd say this was an early original xbox title. Those graphics are absolute garbage. How they can charge $40 for this is mind boggling. $10 dowload max

It looks semi craptastic. Even the die hard nascar fans should probably skip this one and stick to the big boy.

Seems like NASCAR Rumble, which was a fun game. They need more games like this today, really. Shame about no online, though.

That might be the least interesting game I've ever seen a Quick Look of.

Graphics look like a Saturn release.

Seems like the tactic to win is to time when you crash on the last lap so that you don't end up at the back of the pack (with major catch-up to get you to 1st again) when you cross the line.

This feels, in a lot of ways, like a spiritual successor to Nascar Rumble - which was available for the play station one. The arcade style, the lack of any actual relation to nascar itself other than the cars, drivers, and occasional track references all bring my mind right back to that game.

Oh wow this looks awful. $40 is a joke. Even if this was XBLA it would still be a waste of money and time!
