This art style, especially that family portrait, just reminds me of the World Stare Out bits from Big Train.

My stance on horror movies is about the same as Jeff's.

This game seems all right though.

Also, are basements not a thing on the west coast? That seems weird to me.

@mooseymcman: I was surprised too. Apparently they all have crawlspaces instead of basements. I'm pretty sure it has to do with earthquakes.

I vaguely recall a bombcast where they discussed this very issue.

Oh man, please tell me this doesn't mean Patrick is gonna skip this for Spookin'. Dan and Drew are fun dudes, but they're not who I want playing a decent horror game on this site. They can keep the dumb/crappy ones though.

I thought the Edward Gorey-esque art style for this was really cool but the Flash-ass animations kinda ruin it for me. Also I'm a huge pansy when it comes to horror stuff (despite horror-comedies being my favorite genre of movie when done well) but this game isn't scary at all.

A little awkward to watch Drew and Dan's reaction to this game.

Game looks disturbing, but they seemed to be exaggerating.

They wheel it back around halfway through, and what a effective damn game.

Surprised that they didn't pick up on the fact that MC is likely meant to be asthmatic. The game exaggerates the inhales to the point that I think that is what we are meant to think. I could be wrong though.
I wouldn't call myself desensitized, but I do human dissections every week as part of my medical course. Let's just say that having to become 'normalized' to something like that changes the way you perceive and react to to a lot of stuff. That scene was still gnarly to look at though.

I've seen most of this from trailers and the Kickstarter demo, but man that last bit. The constant fucking build up is very impressive and seems to be what will make this game unique/interesting

I was surprised to learn this recently as well - from my understanding it has to do with the frost-line (or lack thereof).

Agh I am so conflicted: Horror games are my favorite and I NEVER watch ANYTHING about them so I discover it all myself, but Dan and Drew are my favorite Giant Bomb duo and I really want to watch this.

... Maybe I will buy it, play all of it, and then come back to watch this.

I think Dan is focusing on the imagery way too much. It's not like the developer has those kind of images in his head, that'd clearly be something far more serious than anxiety or depression. It seems like he's trying to create an interpretation of the queezy feelings of anxiousness and helplessness associated with mental illness, or more specifically depression/anxiety

Fantastic stuff. And big props to Dan for seeming to grasp what depression actually is, while being so far removed from it himself. That's all too rare, and refreshing/reassuring to hear.

I'm curious, given that he doesn't like horror, but enjoys movies like Evil Dead (the second one more than the first, I'm sure): does he enjoy the more over-the-top, silly fare like later Elm Street/Friday the 13th sequels? Maybe some of Troma's stuff? I could totally see Dan sitting down to a Toxic Avenger marathon.

Same goes for Jeff, actually. I refuse to believe that Jeff wouldn't enjoy the zanier side of the genre.

As a person with an intense phobia of dolls, I had to cut the QL off while they were talking about how dolls weren't scary.

I like the art style. The arm vein thing just creeped me the hell out. But except for the primal horror/adrenaline pumps, I cannot say I would enjoy this. Where's my assault rifle so I can fight back? Not happening, eh?

To it's credit, this affected me like a good Horror movie, and not a game like Fear. But I only have so much tolerance for that kind of thing.

@mooseymcman: I can't attest to California, but here in Texas, basements are very rare just because most of the central part of the state has a hard limestone slate underground that is very expensive to dig through. I would assume that they aren't prevalent in California because of how much structural damage could occur during an earthquake, landslide, sinkhole, etc.

I'm just starting to recover from two and a half years of quite severe depression, and I think this game represents it perfectly. That feeling of being completely lost and alone in heavy darkness actually didn't make the game feel creepy to me, but comfortingly familiar in a weird way. That probably makes no sense to most people. I guess I didn't take the imagery literally, as real images/ideas, but representation of the world I, and possibly he, inhabited when everything to be seen was filtered through hopelessness. For me the places where he slowed, gasping for breath, felt like those moments when I had so little energy and so much overwhelm that continuing at all took unbelievable effort. This is probably the best depiction of being in severe depression that I have ever seen. Thanks Matt

I vaguely recall a bombcast where they discussed this very issue.

Yeah, I was always told that they're not common out here because it's an earthquake safety thing. I used to think basements were all out east for people to hide in during tornados and other odd weather phenomenon that we don't get in California.

ON TOPIC: This game looks fantastic visually and the atmosphere is gripping. Will have to give this a go once I've got some extra time on my hands.

It depends where on the West Coast. I've lived in California where no one had basements, yet up here in Seattle basements are pretty common.
