I feel like this is oddly Freudian, or fourth-wall breaking, or something. I mean, the game is a metaphor for current day Nintendo; all about getting the coins. They don't care how lazy their games are now (Wii Sports, Wii Music, Wii Party, etc.), they just care about gettin' them Benjamins. The entire New Mario franchise is a lazy piece of shit. I mean, fuck - where's the ambition? They've been recycling assets from the first DS game for years now. And Nintendo only makes it, not because they have a great fresh idea for where to take it, but because they want them coins. It's kind of insulting that Nintendo's being so upfront about this, and that no one seems to notice or care.

But since I've been playing Mario games since the NES, I'm going to skip this piece of shit. I can't believe how lazy Nintendo's Mario team - well, the New Mario Bros. team, at any rate (The Galaxy and 3D Land guys still care about ambition and originality) - is. I mean, they're SIDESCROLLERS. They're not even that hard to make. And they can't bring any more ambition to these than this? Look at how Mario 1 evolved into Mario USA/2. New moves, new gameplay, new level designs with vertical focus, new enemies, new art...everything was new. And then from SMB2 to SMB3; again, all new assets, even more refined level design theory where they were both horizontal and vertical, and new powerups that changed the game. Plus the map screens. Fuck, even the map screens in the New Super games are lazy - just a straight fucking line. No hidden levels, no nothing. The New Super Mario team blows; it sucks that these games sell, like, 29 million copies. It's sending Nintendo completely the wrong message.

If I get this, I'm getting it used. I don't want MY COINS to go to Nintendo. Not for pumping out lazy dogshit like this. I'll see you again when you bring out a REAL Mario game.

I assume some 3D effects are in there along with the blur. I guess the parallax effect is 3D.

I'll probably buy this because I'm a fool. It's funny that I bought 6 Golden Coins off the eshop and that feels like a more fresh experience than this. Bunny Mario and Pumpkin Zone and a friggin' kill counter.

So please, get rid of the dancing turtles and do another Mario World thing. Something as different as part 2 was to 1.

I'm totally fine with a rehashed Super Mario Bros. game. It's a lot of fun, so I'll buy it. It definitely seems like the portable DS games are easier than the console versions, though. I'd rather have the tougher New Super Mario Bros. Wii experience than the cakewalk DS games. Speaking of difficult platformers...when is Donkey Kong Country on 3DS coming out? That's the game I want!

Nintendo made New Super Mario Bros 2 as a joke. An ironic statement on the current industry of video games.

Instead of using the obvious character Wario, the game uses Mario who coldly grabs all the gold he can, symbolizing greedy publishers that just want money and don't care about quality.

It's also the first Nintendo game to have paid DLC.

The ultimate goal in the game is to collect 1000000 gold coins and what does that get you? A new title screen. This is a reward that is as empty, shallow and as unfulfilling as it is to complete other modern AAA games. Nintendo knows this... I mean, they HAVE to, right? It's just a joke game, right?

Sorry guys. Need to correct you a bit about the save game system. Actually you can save everytime you are on the world map. Just press Start and then Quick-Save. Though it also has a flaw. After saving, the game will quit and go to the start screen. This was the same in previous releases.

Does it really not autosave? The coin count was higher on every trip to the title screen.

Also, Mario declares "Mario time" only in the single player mode, just like in NSMBW. Look into that what you will.

This is a baaaaad quick look, because the game actually answers a lot of their questions as they're playing it, but they don't even notice. But that happens sometimes, I just wish, you know, that it didn't.

Also, saying we're never going to get a game like Elite Beat ignores the fact that Theatrhythm exists and is apparently pretty good.

NSMB U sounds like the game these guys will have much more fun with. It will have a TON of Super Mario World vibes going on.

As for this one, first of all in co-op each player can grab control of the camera through ground-pounding the other, but they never seem to care to experiment at all when playing Nintendo games. Also personally, the coin rush mode sells the game for me for the most part. The levels have been really well designed around that mechanic/mode.

It's fun, the WiiU game will be more fun

I may be the first person to say this here, but this game is enter than you guys are making it out to be. In particular I'd like to talk about coin rush mode, which is actually pretty amazing if you've got someone to trade scores with. I happen to be lucky enough to have a neighbor who has a 3ds, so I'm one of those people. Playing this mode while trying to maximize coins forces you to play each level smartly. You quickly start to realize the attention to detail that goes into the level designs. More, when you don't play as raccoon Mario, you have only a single life, which means you have to play WELL. I know many people find these games easy, but not making a single mistake over three levels can be a real challenge. Each time you die, even if you're at the end of the third level, you start back in the first level of the pack. I get the skepticism, but the game is well designed with lots of clever little moments. Are they making these games too often? Probably. Iwata said in an interview they're thinking one per console though, which suggests we may be about to get a long break. Given the tail on sales for these games that may actually be the case, because they don't really need a new one every year since the old one keeps selling. At the end of the day, though, I've been having a LOT of fun with this "boring" game.
