34:25: That's the reason I don't like sports games; because the unplayed players will do things that actual players would never do.

I really liked sports games better when they were all simple and completely bananas. They should give the players some cool abilities instead of focusing on realism. Abilities like laser eyes cutting open a hole in the ice where a three headed hockey-hydra comes up and helps your team out. And a Scorpion chain-hook that you can throw out to pull players in with, or even the puck. Or a super-shot that's so powerful it can shoot other players across the ice.

Anyone else want in?

I don't quite know if their lack of sports knowledge amuses or hurts me. It's like watching a game show and knowing the answers when a contestant doesn't.

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey was a N64-era arcade game, but there was also a Wayne Gretzky Hockey franchise for the PC, back when VGA graphics were new and exciting. It was developed by Bethesda, back when they were known mainly for this and the Terminator FPS, so it it was made by some of the founders of the Elder Scrolls series.

I absolutely cannot wait for FIFA VS. Pro EVO (I actually hope they do a sort of "Quick Look face-off" and put both games in the same video). I haven't played a sports game in forever, unless you count Mario Strikers, and now I suddenly feel like there aren't enough on the release schedule! I certainly hope Vinny and Jeff take a look at NBA 2K13 and NBA Live 13 when they come out (IF Live 13 comes out).

Hockey always seemed like it's the ideal sport for video games. Shame that these days Madden gets most of the glory, especially since the NHL series has been so solid.

Damn, the concept of passing eludes them! They both suck at NHL.

He tells Jonathan Quick (Kings goaltender) to go back to Canada, which I thought was funny, because Jonathan Quick is from Connecticut. One of the best American hockey players out there right now.

Anyhow, I thought this quick look was great, though I'll admit to a little frustration at their reluctance to do simple things like pass - Vinny in particular just kept flying into the offensive zone and skating toward the net until someone stripped the puck from him, when he had teammates painfully open for a pass. I was also confused by their comments about how hard it was to complete a pass, since it's pretty dead easy - just point in a direction and hit the trigger.

Sports quick looks where they go in without knowing anything about the sport or the games are generally funny though, if not informative.

EA's NHL games have been great for several years now. My only gripes are the lack of true TV presentation, the bad looking faces, and the stale commentary that has been pretty much untouched in years - and featuring two guys who don't even do NHL games any more, as far as I know!

If the quote "there are shots, and then there are laser beams" makes you cringe, you know what I mean.

Oh motherfucking snap!

My dad has been an LA Kings fan since before I was born and I only occasionally watched games with him. But when the Kings made their run to the Stanley cup in June I was watching a hell of a lot more hockey than I ever had. Now I'm hooked and excited to see how the Kings do with pretty much the same exact winning line-up a second go-around. But with the lock-out pretty much now a decided thing, there will be no hockey this year... So my dad decided to buy NHL 13, the first game I think he has ever purchased for himself since the NES days.

So we picked it up and spent a good 4 hours or so just playing one on one and I gotta say, it's pretty fucking good. The stick controls and physics-centric nature remind me of EA Skate, there are a lot of options and you can get the controls down after a few games. I mean, sure, the first goal I scored in the game was in my own net, it was still pretty awesome even with such a stupid accident of trying to poke check the puck three feet in front of my net.

My dad got pissed off a lot, nearly throwing the controller a half-dozen times because he wasn't used to the momentum-dependent nature of the player's movements. He rarely plays games. He can shoot his way through Unreal on the PC, but hand him a controller and he manages to aim correctly, but get lost with the left thumb-stick, running into walls. I had to remind him which button was A and which one made us punch each other.

Like hockey? This may be the only hockey you'll get this year.

FYI, up here in Canada, a lot of the hockey "experts" on TV etc. are predicting the lockout will end either a) in late November, or b) in time for the Winter Classic to be the season opener.
