@reignofevil666: What kind of attitude is that? Someone fails to provide insightful commentary and actually spreads misinformation, and instead of being liable for that, instead we should just pat them on the back and say "nice job, sport"? No wonder the modern games industry is so shitty - it's full of legions of fans who are willing to overlook any flaw, any error, and keep fellating the people in charge no matter how much they fuck up.

What hypocrisy - gamers are up in arms over the recent Eurogamer scandal, yet when it comes to their treasured idols providing sub-par coverage, they look the other way. Why even bother providing quality coverage at this point? It's not like anybody gives a flying fuck about it. Go, keep subscribing, keep watching ads, keep these guys in business so they can continue to provide inaccurate, poorly-researched coverage, so you can fund their non-employment man-child fantasies.

@sear:

Quicklooks are done on the fly and are not scripted. That's what makes this site unique and interesting.

The mistakes or personal opinions in the video don't justify why some of us pay for the subscription.

The term "Self aware" has been thrown around with reckless abandonment on this site as of late.

I just played through both Painkiller and the Battle out of Hell expansion quite recently. This looks pretty much identical, but with nicer graphics and a new gun (hopefully there's more than just one).

@hamjam: Agreed. I just like the idea of getting to see a good portion of the game. The problem is sometimes some of them do not take the time to look at the interface to understand basic systems of the game. However, I really enjoy the host and their idea to leave ads off and generally give the subscribers what they want, DUMB FUN.

I wish, desperately, that you guys would go back and actually play Doom. Or one of the mods for it (might I suggest Brutal Doom?).

I know it's the cliche, lazy internet thing to do, but comparing Painkiller and Serious Sam to Doom is just insulting Doom. They're completely mindless games; the Dynasty Warriors of shooters. I'm not saying they're not fun - I'm just saying, Doom did a lot more. And you guys should give credit to it instead of regurgitating the internet opinion that these new, dumb shooters are just like Doom.

I mean c'mon. Doom may have been "Go from point A to point B", but it didn't mindlessly throw enemies at you. It was as much about exploring Phobos as it was about battling the demons of Hell. Those levels were not linear, they weren't mere arenas to trap the player in. They had a really effective sense of place. They were loaded with secrets. You weren't just blazing through levels; you were looking for everything. And those environments were so effective, I bet you STILL know which wall hides the Chainsaw is in the first couple of levels.

Shooters today... their level designs are dogshit. Not just this "lock you in an arena until you kill x swarms of bad guys" stuff from Painkiller and Serious Sam, but also the "We're just a linear theme park attraction"-kind of crap from Call of Battlefield: Warfighter.

Seriously, Patrick, Brad - I'm BEGGING you. Go back and play some older shooters. They're better than most modern shooters. They deserve more credit from you.

They have played doom before. There's a premium member feature called "Breaking Brad" where they push brad to his limit and one of the games he had to play was doom 2. They actually play a lot of old games in the premium member part of the site. You should check it out if you ever decide to throw down for the subscription.

Patrick why would you insist on cutting off the quick look in the middle of that epic boss fight?

@vinsanityv22: So, funny story. On TESTED Octoberkast (October 26th) Brad and Jeff talked very specifically about Doom, and even more specifically about Brutal Doom. Also, Brad's played all the way through Doom 2 on the hardest difficulty as one of the features for this (Giant Bomb) site. And in looking at Doom 3 BFG (for Giant Bomb) they talked all about the Doom games. They talked about them on the Bombcast, as well.

They know Doom. They have played Doom.

Maybe shell out some cash and become premium, there's a slew of videos with exactly that

Hmm, not digging the new gun or enemy design/reskins.

But this does make me want to replay the original Painkiller and it's first expansion. Goddamn that game was magic when it came out.

Hard Reset is a better one of these sorts of games.

Not by a longshot.

There is way more enemy variety in Painkiller. Same goes for imaginative weapons, Hard reset weapons and their possible uses are like bland water when it stands next to Painkiller weapon selection . The environments were again interesting and varied in Painkiller changing theme with every new chapter, there was imagination and craft in those level designs, while Hard Reset has only a single drab look that maintains through ought (aside from slight change in the expansion). The music in Painkiller can go from blood pumping action to haunting sounds of the abandoned military base, that gave chills. And Painkiller moooves. Hard Reset is a monotonous slow slog by comparison. Virtually on every level Painkiller is an objectively better game.

There is a reason it got so many fan boys and appreciators and why even mainstream press remembers it from time to time with fondness.
