I'm also not a huge fan of the "Simon Says-lookin" buttons, was surprised that Brad mentioned as it was something I had thought to myself. Minor quibble, of course.

@larrydavis: just because its for kids doesnt mean its exempt from being able to improve in a 20 year time span. besides it being prettier, the only thing new or different from the original red/blue games seems to be that there are minigames you can play with your pokemon now and the xp share.

Pokemon has improved and changed in a shit ton of ways since Red and Blue. People who talk about the games not changing at all are like guys who say that fighting games or CoD-style shooters haven't improved or changed at all since SFII or COD1 because the core mechanics are mostly unchanged.

the last one i played was....i think gold/silver? the last ones before they went to DS. and youre wrong, i think COD hasnt changed since COD4, and it pretty much hasnt. From watching this QL and from what i remember, there is practically nothing different, besides its 3D and you have analog movement now. Im sure they could figure out a way to improve the battle system somewhat, or at least surface more stats for people, aka like all Nintendo games, stop treating everyone like children. Yes, keep it simple since its mainly a kids game, but at least have some 'advanced' options.

Pokemon X/Y is the best Pokemon game they've ever made. I thought I was done with B2/W2 (I only got halfway and was sick of it). The EXP Share changes, the movement speed, the online features, the HUGE amount of Pokemon. A TON of fun. Super Training makes it really easy to get into the competitive scene too. So good. Gonna be in my top 5 GOTY for sure.

They have improved the battle system. And they HAVE surfaced more stats for people! There ARE more advanced options! You have no clue what you're talking about!

It's nice to see the game played from the perspective of folks who aren't really into pokemon games because it highlights the shortcomings of the series (they really don't explain type matchups well outside of the manuals, many stats are hidden, many move damage values and effects aren't explained at all well)

Really enjoyed the quick look.

Because you have to get one with optimal stats!!! Catch 50 and keep the best one.

I wish I would have heard @brad discuss cecotropes before i got my house rabbits. my rabbit doesn't eat all of its cecotropes and, let me tell you, they are not like regular rabbit turds. they definitely smell different (much, much worse) and are more fluid-like. it sticks to wood floors, then hardens. it is the worst! rabbits are disgusting...

The only reason people are aying this game is amazing, is because the rest of the pokemon games have lacked any development whatsoever. So when we are presented with a game that does a tiny bit, all the fans jump on the bandwagon and hype it up.

Been really digging the game, love the little changes that've been made, particularly where it comes to making certain facets easier to use. Hawlucha is the greatest pokemon ever.

"the skating is too fast, can't you take them off?" just use the d-pad to walk or run instead.

"I wish you could just drag the pokemon to a different position" you can, just drag it.

Yeah, the stick thing wouldn't make sense at first but when you see it in animate it a little clear. Still the reaction when he was touching it was pretty funny.

I'm making an assumption that you weren't big into the metagame when you were in Gold/Silver? The systems change things up pretty much every single game when they add something new. This time, it's Mega Evolutions, which look super cool, and turn some older pokemon into veritable gods competitively, and the new Fairy type, which shut down dragons (who have ruled the metagame with an iron fist for generations) almost completely, and gave poison types a use besides maybe looking cool and being garbage statistically. You have to look for the system changes, Nintendo is Nintendo, they're not going to surface that stuff up front, if you're in it, you'll do your research to find out anyway, and if you're not hardcore, then you can just enjoy the ride.

I kind of don't blame you though, if you only see skin deep and say "This is just a 3D version of the game I played 10 years ago", but just do a bit of research and you'll see there is far more changed than meets the eye.

Yeah, I sorta got into Pokemon last year for the first time with the GBA games to see what the hype was about. There's a ton of depth but it's really hidden and not explained well at all in the game from what I can tell. At first I felt like I had to constantly reference the internet to figure out what things exactly did. For example I thought things natures were just "flavor text" until I read lots of the bulbapedia wiki. There's a lot of complex systems at play which baffled me for it being a kid friendly game, but then again you can ignore most of it and still have a good time. I feel like if 10 year old me played this game and was super into RPGs and systems, I'd easily memorize type effectiveness, but 30 year old me screws it up constantly.

As a ten year old that played it way back when, that stuff is burned into the back of my mind forever haha, learning that stuff has always seemed like something the developers want you to learn on your own and not just be told with some sort of on-screen tooltip or something. It's a design choice for sure.
