Quick Look: Pure Pool

It's hard to notice sync issues here because it's pool and there are only so many sound cues to go off of, but it went way out of sync for me eventually!

I take your word for it! The site has had trouble with this with the auto uploads before, and they usually fix it with a manual upload the next day (today). Probably the same thing that happened here.

Geez... see previous examples of numerous "oo" words not pronounced that way. Are you new to English spelling? It often makes very little phonetic sense.

Anyway... Dan is such a perfect example of middle America it makes me smile. Not dumb, just ignorant. And, yes, it explains quite a bit about our country.

Yes, oo can be and often is pronounced /ʊ/ in any American dialect I know of, and I don't think it's terribly different for a lot of words in British English. I don't know anyone who would, for example, say the word foot with a /u/ sound (i.e. what you would hear in threw, too, spruce); it would always be more or less the /ʊ/ sound. But then there are variations even among American English speakers, even from the same area. I know some people who pronounce roof as /ruf/ and others who say /rʊf/, and then some who interchange between the two without even thinking about it.

English is weird, yo. While Jeff certainly has had some rather peculiar pronunciations in the past, this is hardly the affront any of you are making it out to be.

Dan is soooo right with doing better drunk when playing pool. I played pool last night with a couple of beers in me and I was playing much better than when I was playing sober!

I watched this using the progressive HD setting, and noticed frequent smearing and occasionally the screen would go white/light grey for a split second. Tried the YouTube version with the same results.

I noticed similar problems with the Mario Party Party video, so I'm gonna direct this at @drewbert and @rorie .

I call the three-player game that Dan described "cutthroat" which I think is much more cool than "cannonball."

Pool Nation is a great pool game.

I like the look of this game. The camera angle, and the lines showing which directions the balls will go afterwards remind me of Monkey Billiards in Super Monkey Ball, which is by far my favourite video game pool experience.

I'll most likely pick this up when the Xbox One version comes out.

This game sure does look pretty.

Dat ball and felt rendering tech is legit, and I'd say that pool was like 97-98% pure. Also 9-ball is the superior pool

Yo @drewbert/ @unastrike there seems to be something up with video compression, I'm getting full-screen artifacts now and then on both this and Mario Party Party, on High/Progressive for reference.

Yeah I also call it cutthroat, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear its called different things in different places.

Also, snooker and potting are very much pool terms. I grew up in California and I am familiar with these pool terms.

Also, pool is a sport as much as skateboarding, video games, chess, and poker. Take that for what you will.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm an Aussie and I say snooker with the "oo" as in "booth" but I can see where the weird pronunciation comes from. They're wrong, but I understand why they're saying it that way.

Fuck them, I'd love to go to a bar like that. Assuming the drinks aren't stupid expensive, I love fancier places to drink. There's a time and a place for dive bars, at least good ones, but mostly the absent or subdued exposure to shitty people makes them a-okay in my book.

I love the photorealism.

I could applaud that but adding the ability to look slightly higher when lining up your shot so you can have a better chance of seeing where it ended up would have been a godsend and still been realistic.

Not trying to start a little comment battle or anything, I appreciate the info and the source, but I guess I just really want a good pool game and that camera made me sad...
