And people say RE4 has bad controls...RE4 is still perfectly playable, this however is not. Those tank controls were shitty even back then. People were already compaining about the controls around the time of RE2 and 3. I can't believe it took them almost a decade from RE1 to fix them in RE4.

Quit your bitchin', the controls were perfectly fine and for many they're still very easy to get accustomed to. I can very easily understand people to be turned off by such a control scheme in 2011, but calling them ''broken'' straight from when it was first released? Clearly you must of just sucked bad at the game.

I remember them being rough when it came out. Of course the Japanese original version BioHazard didn't even have auto aim that was added for Resident Evil. The controls are straight from the Alone in the Dark series as are the totally useless (game play wise) camera angles.

If I ever make it Japan I will be sorely disappointed if I don't find everyone inserting animal shaped emblems into same-shaped spots to unlock their doors.

They should of just paired this and RE4 together, y'know, like close to every other HD rerelease out there... even as the fanatic that I be, I'm not going to shill out around £36 for games I already have two copies of each.

I'm not really a Resident Evil super fan, but I really can't stand how much people complain about the "tank controls". It was a pretty elegant solution considering the fixed camera angles. It bugs me these days when you play a game like God of War in which a camera change can sort of mess with the controls. Also, people seem to forget that RE4 had the EXACT SAME MOVEMENT CONTROLS.

I remember them being rough when it came out. Of course the Japanese original version BioHazard didn't even have auto aim that was added for Resident Evil. The controls are straight from the Alone in the Dark series as are the totally useless (game play wise) camera angles.

Anyone who was playing survival-horror games of the 1990's to early 2000's should of had no problem adjusting. People who would be heading in after being accustomed to standard third-person shooters would of found themselves hiking up a learning curve to be sure. But stating the controls to be ''broken'' is completely hyperbolic, and it's almost the same as someone saying (during that era) the older Gran Turismo controls/handling were broken after playing nothing but Ridge Racer and Mario Kart. Or even like for today's standards, and someone professing that Demon's Souls is ''broken'' - which there are still a fair few, I've noticed. :o

Also the camera angles were primarily there to give a sense of dread, and sometimes claustrophobia even; that in turn could still affect the gameplay, forcing you to take a much slower-pace and be more methodical than you would with, say, RE5. The atmospheric input is what spurned the camera angle concept, though they still fitted in perfectly. You got bit by a zombie you couldn't see? That's your own fault for not paying attention to your surroundings and listening out for enemy sound-bites. The auto-aim also proved invaluable for those occasions as well; having that cut out of the Japanese version sucks to hear, but it would be a minor loss since it's about you and keeping your senses in top gear.

In that case the perspective was fixed behind the character, so your controls were never reversed in respect to the direction you were facing (as the player, not the character). The character's perspective and the player's perspective were always the same. That makes a huge difference.

This game is $20? That's crazy. Code Veronica isn't a good enough game to warrant that price, not to mention the PS2 version is easily findable at any used games retailer for under $10.

Eh. I think the controls add to the horror. Few games can get away with that. Twenty dollars is a bit much, though.

I agree. I also think people are jaded about everything, "wah old games are old!" Well no crap, some people still enjoy this format.

How old is the concept of tetris inventories? I only remember them from playing Diablo 2 and Resident Evil 4. They probably the funnest way to manage inventory. At least when you can rotate things.

I didn't mind 4 but it should have been a new series. I'd love to see them go back to trying to make something remotely scary with better gunplay, similar to Dead Space perhaps.

I can't disagree with you less. I've played the original RE and RE2 quite a bit and was almost not scared at all, but I thought RE4 was absolutely terrifying almost constantly. Especially those regenerators near the end, and that black thing with the scorpion tail, and that whole first area with the chainsaw dudes...it was tense and freaky throughout. I felt the garbage gameplay in the old games was so distracting it made it hard to be too invested in it, even with the vulnerability it gave you. I don't understand that sentiment at all. RE5 wasn't scary at all, so I can understand that. I even found RE4 scarier than Dead Space and Dead Space 2, both of which I've beaten. So...eye of the beholder? Other than why on earth would you prefer garbage games to a well-designed action game that's also scary?

Resident Evil 4 terrifying?! Really? Wow I think you'd go into cardiac arrest if you played 15 minutes of Amnesia. The beta of 4 looked like it would have been creepy, but then they totally canned it, started from scratch and made an action game instead. Resident Evil on Gamecube (remake) is the scariest game in the series, not that Resident Evil has ever been particularly scary, though.

Dead Space and its sequel, while resorting to jump scares at times had great sound design which made it more eerie to play than Resident Evil 4, it's a much creepier game when playing with decent headphones or a surround sound setup. I'm sure if you played Dead Space before you played Resident Evil 4 you would admit to it being a scarier game, it's a matter of what you've played first and likely being younger at the time, some of the 'scares' in 4 probably toughened you up making future games have less of an effect.

Vinny and Brad should both really check out the remake for part 1 on the Gamecube. Easily the best one out of the "tank control" games IMO. It still holds up graphically too.

REmake is great because of the new Type C controls that let you move forward by holding the R trigger. And because of Lisa Trevor. It would be a perfect game for a new ER, actually, so long as it was done by Brad and Vinny and they played as Jill on Easy.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/358/358101p2.html

Luckily, though, there are other control schemes present, and one that we highly recommend over the standard setup. It's control 'Type C,' and while it might take a minute or two to get used to, particularly for seasoned players familiar with the old controls, it's worth the time and energy. In Type C, players move Jill and Chris with the R button -- minimal pressure makes them walk and full pressure makes them run. The analog stick, then, is used for turning the characters as they run, a huge benefit during play. The offensive aiming positions, meanwhile, are then mapped to the L button. Everything else remains largely unchanged. This alternative scheme feels all around more intuitive once the initial effects of the change wear off.

I think Vinny should just watch that one Gametrailers retrospective where they go over all of the resident evil games, that sounds just about right for his level of interest in this series, it's better than a wiki and he doesn't have to buy or play the games.

This game had the best Resident Evil knife ever. By the time I got Claire's upgrade for her handgun I had 220 some bullets from stabbing zombies in the legs, making them trip, and then stabbing them to death. That combo could get you through half of Claire's chapter.

I also had to play it two times before I learned you could lose the fire extinguisher, or put Claire's weapons in the Item Box so Chris could use them when he started his game. But there were some cool weapons.

I played this for the first time a couple years back. It's really a game you have to both love and hate at the same time.

It's probably the best of the classic RE style, but that inventory management.. probably the worst in the entire series. That moment where Brad had no room to pick up the briefcase and had to run back to lose an item.. expect to do that all the goddamn time through the entire game. That's really what makes classic RE almost unplayable in the modern era. Key items should have gotten their own slots really.

The story does get pretty insane in some weird ways but some sometimes awesome ways. Probably the most interesting in the series.
