I want to quote you a thousand times over. I've been saying that for a long time but everybody just shouts me down because they want 24/7 Giant Bomb coverage. Duder, maybe just watch half the video then? Or a fourth of it? Or however much you want because you have the freedom to do so? Look at it this way, doesn't it make more sense to appeal to both people who want long videos and people who want short videos by making long videos? If every quicklook was super short, the people who like the longer content wouldn't have the option of consuming longer content. You, on the other hand have that option with the way things work currently. Unless you have some sort of OCD completionist personality who feels compelled to sit down and watch something from start to finish.

Between online co-op and trying to beat friends high-scores I'll definitely be putting plenty of time into this... The higher difficulties looked great in terms of what it starts to throw at you on screen, that 1st level definitely looked underwhelming on the easiest difficulty level.

Also have to echo the whole lack of boost usage in the quick look, some of those enemy line-ups were just begging to be boosted through... I believe that boosting through enemies allows you to extend the boost duration as well.

Can't say I am a big fan of the "3D voxel imitating 2D art style" aesthetics. The light effects and overall gameplay seems pretty cool and I like the fact that it all takes place on a horizontal circle. But those voxels, I just can't.

A developer or at least somebody with way more know dropped into neogaf, stated that this was the demo build version 0.80. The retail one will be 1.06 and has more, and better effects

I usually don't watch the whole thing anymore. It's not a concern for me at this point. But like I said, it makes it really hard to get my friends into Giant Bomb because they think the videos are all way too long. Like, they're interested in the new Call of Duty, but they don't want to watch two hours of it. They want like 10 to 20 minutes, tops.

I think there's plenty of long-form content on the site, but not that much short content. Most of the premium videos are really long, and to me, that makes sense. Let premium users get the longer stuff and have shorter videos for non-premium members. If they want more, become a subscriber. The whole point of Quick Looks was to be short. They could do other, longer videos with the extra time they save by not doing two hour Quick Looks.

Besides, how much video content do people need, honestly? It's not like there's a lack of content here. In a given week, there's a 3+ hour Bombcast, multiple long Quick Looks, multiple Bombin in the AMs, random livestreams (the latest of which has been 49 hours), features like Load Our Last Souls and Pathfinder, a Worth Playing, and Unprofessional Fridays. I have no idea how people could possibly demand more.

Years ago, I used to be proud that I'd seen every single Giant Bomb video. Now, I find myself skipping over most videos because they're too long or I'm not interested in the game, etc. and sometimes I'll just skip through videos that are kind of boring. Like I said, it's not a concern for me anymore. The only reason I'm even discussing it now is because another user brought up the idea.

i find that funny in that that's pretty much the opposite of typical complaints around here, lol.

i see where you're coming from of shorter videos being a way of hooking people in. jeff may need to heed that if he wants to try to expand the site like he's supposedly been saying (even if i personally love the long form content).

I'm surprised how many people are freaking out about this game. It really seems kind of uninspired and boring. If the PS4 had a better launch lineup this would be completely ignored.

You would have a point if the first 10 minutes of the video showed exactly the same parts of the game, and the commentary was exactly the same.

As it is, the information and opinions are both spread out arbitrarily through the entire video, so if you watch only 10 minutes you will probably miss interesting conversations that happen later on. If they limited the video to 10-20 minutes, it would give you the same info, just more condensed. For example.

But here's the thing. To do a very short quick look (5-10 minutes tops), the guys have to be very prepared to be able to dish out the critical information in a much shorter time frame. This also means they have to have picked out beforehand exactly which parts of the game they're going to show in order to get as much info out there. Editing also comes into the picture at this point. Perhaps in order to show multiple parts of a game, they would have to edit out the parts of reloading saves or playing up to the part they wanted to show. It's a lot more effort than just "make it shorter". I don't have to tell you this, but Giant bomb's style has always been super relaxed. They just sort of play it by ear. If you brought this up to Jeff, I wouldn't be surprised if he started talking about how small the team is, and how heaving editing and planning would take up too much time. That seems to be the feelings he's expressed repeatedly throughout the years, anyway.

Believe it or not, you and I aren't all that dissimilar. I also used to pride myself in fully consuming every piece of content on the site. Then, like you, I started skipping through parts of quicklooks that I didn't find entertaining, information, etc. And, like you, I also hesitate to refer my friends to GB. I realize that their style isn't for everyone. Especially mainstream gamers who are focused on games like Call of Duty.

I mean, that's the argument that people always give, but it's like... the Quick Looks used to be short. They just didn't spend so much time on the menus, describing what a game is before playing it, or show a bunch of levels. They were quick looks in the literal sense.

The Demon's Souls Quick Look was like 30 to 40 minutes and that was long for the time, but still, such a fantastic Quick Look. The Dark Souls Quick Look is like two hours and while it has some incredible moments (the bridge) it also has a lot of down time.

I'm not saying they need to edit anything or be so over-prepared that they suck the fun out of it. I'm just saying that not every game needs a Quick Look the length of a TV show, and rarely ever does a game need a Quick Look the length of a movie. Because like, even beyond trying to get new people into Giant Bomb, sometimes it just gets boring even for me.

Also, just as a note, the guy I was referring to with the Call of Duty thing isn't a mainstream gamer at all. The game he's working on right now is Persona 4. I got him Persona 3 for his birthday last year and he loved it so I got Persona 4 for him this year. I got him to watch a fair amount of the Endurance Run and he liked it a lot but it was a little much for him after a while. He likes what I've shown him of Giant Bomb (he absolutely loves the Kenka Bancho QL) but isn't a regular user because of the length of the videos. So I mean, it's not just like dudebros too busy crushing beer cans against their heads between rounds of CoD or Madden.

i'm starting to think the sensible answer may be no quick looks over 30 minutes, and it should be fairly warranted. i love the guys, what they do, and their longform content is quite entertaining on multiple occasions (2-3 hr bombcast and 2+hr UPF till i dieeee), but for the site in general, and maybe for what Jeff has planned in the long term, it may serve them best to at least rein in the QLs a bit.

it's kinda like with MST3K; there's only so much of Prince of Space i can stand, even with Mike, Tom Servo, and Crow ragging on it. ok maybe a sorta bad example...

From what I understand/have heard, they're not set up (and afaik basically nobody else is either) to be able to pipe the visual quality of what they see when they play the game into a video you see on the website. Be it bitrate, file sizes, codec compression, what have you, there are numerous things in the way that make it just not feasible at this point and time. Also, the majority of the awe is coming from the particles and voxel-esque shattering effects.
