Quick Look: Saints Row IV

Hmmm, the console version looks playable for the most part.

And sure, the PC version runs at a smooth 60fps but everything else still looks kinda not so good, such as the extreme popup or the textures.

People loooove to toss around the $2,000 number, but I don't know anyone who spent nearly that much on their PC. If you can afford new consoles, you can afford a video card (especially when you save SO MUCH on the games).

PCs gaming isn't more expensive than console gaming. It's cheaper. Time to stop the Mr. Moneybags myth.

Why did Brad say Nolan North and Troy Baker became indistinguishable? They doesn't sound similar at all.

I'd also have to say I'm not very impressed with the game. It just looks like SR3 but with crazy super powers right off the bat. Seems kinda boring. Doesn't give me a sense of motivation to unlock stuff.

Godfuckingfuck the framerate the moment they switched to PC. Wish they'd pared back console resources a little to improve the FPS, my god.

I gotta admit though, I'm jealous of the guys who are incapable of discerning the difference. Ignorance is bliss because I used to be the same until I played games on PC and got used to the high framerate.

In the case of SR IV I can see why Jeff is supporting the PC version 100%. The gameplay in that game looks like it gets crazy, really fast and it's only exacerbated because of the super powers, the consoles simply cannot keep up with what's going on screen.

Some people won't be able to tell that the game is pretty much running in slowmo (it almost looks like it's locked at 25 fps, wtf) but fuck going from 60 fps silkiness to that slow mess? No thank you.

The horrible horrible issues of the console version don't bother me at all. Also, Farcry is completely playable.

Wow, the framerate on the 360 version is a total bummer. I didn't think it would be as bad as they said, since they said the same thing about Far Cry 3 when I didn't find it to be nearly as bad as they did. But man...this runs like shit. Too bad it's my only option for playing the game. The game itself looks fantastic, and I'm still really looking forward to it.

I'm picking this up day one. Can't say I understand the mass indifference in these comments, especially considering how much more enjoyable this looks than the third game, which was a disappointment in various areas compared to SR2.

Well really, the true Boss voice would be the black voice since Kenn Michael is the only one to voice The Boss in every Saints Row game (he did the 4 spoken lines featured in the first game if you made a black character).

Refreshing to read the comments here. I thought I was just blindly hating again, but apparently I'm not alone. Saints Row 3 didn't age well with me, and I'm just exhausted by Volitions "humor". Apparently being zany gets you a pass with PS2 era mechanics, bland missions and a copy/pasted world.

If you love this series and get a kick out of playing it, good for you - but I'm just checking out. Gone Home and Payday 2 look vastly more entertaining

I'm with you. If you have a high end PC and play all of your games on that, then great, that's awesome. And as a console owner, I can easily admit that the PC versions of games for the past couple of years have been superior to their console counterparts. But I'm getting really tired of hearing that I should "only" play so and so game on PC, as if that's the only option and everyone can afford to own one that runs games really well. I played Far Cry 3 on my 360 from beginning to end, and it was fine. Sure the frame rate wasn't a solid 60 frames, but it still looked good and was by no means unplayable, despite what Brad said. I haven't watched this quick look yet, but I'm sure that I'll still be able to enjoy this game on 360, even if it isn't as solid as the PC version.

That running side mission made me feel ill just watching it thanks to the framerate. Guess I'll be getting the PC version at some point, unless the PS3 version's better than this.

all I hear is Kanji Tatsume or Nathan Drake - I don't know who these Troy and Nolan are :D Also I don't have the means to play it on PC but I didn't find SR3 as funny as these guys did and I didn't laugh watching this QL so I guess its just not my style of humour. I'll pick up the console version some time in 2014 for a few pounds - maybe.

I am happy to wait for the inevitable sale. I really liked Saints Row: The Third but I can wait a bit. Happy it's best on PC because that's exactly where I was going to buy it anyway.

The Black Hole gun is totally the Singularity Rifle from Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Looks like a re-skinning of SR3 with more stuff crammed in. Way less pumped for this game, but I'll still get it day one.

At least GTA V isn't too far off for what looks like a way more polished, refined, expansive open world experience.

Loved 1 and 2. Enjoyed 3. This just honestly looks like junk, or at least some sort of big, ridiculous expansion for 3. Could not be more turned off by this game, which is unfortunate. Some of the jumping and running looks ok, but fuck does everything look dull. The fact they released that shit, the way it is, on consoles.....fucking pathetic and gross.

You do need more than a laptop, assuming you have any kind of standards. Wanting games to run at 60 fps at 1080p+ on high settings is a perfectly valid goal.

Understood. But there is a difference between: 'this version looks a lot better than that version' and 'this version is unplayable' or 'you shouldn't play this version'.

I may be wrong, I haven't played the game, but if they are talking Far Cry 3 style performance differences, then I will be totally fine playing it on my 360.

I have a high end gaming laptop, but I prefer to play on my console, especially games where I have the previous installment on console also; which is this game.

I loved the movement in that game (and in Spiderman 2), even if the whole product wasn't as good, plus I really fucking love The Matrix, so I'm definitely going to grab this I think. But yeah, I'm kinda torn on which version to get, since I usually hate playing this sort of game on PC, but it looks like the framerate just fucking tanks on 360.

I guess I'll just plug in a wired controller, but eh. Shame about the console versions.

You realize next-gen systems are still gonna be aiming for 30FPS on most games, right? That's the problem with closed systems, all developers want is fancier bells and whistles, which pushes your static tech to its limit and performance diminishes quickly.

Also the 360 version looked horrible. I noticed the terrible framerate in a video on the web, and noticed an absolutely ridiculously huge framerate jump when they switched versions. If you can notice that on the internet, imagine how big the leap in actual gameplay is going to be.

If PC ports were shit you can be sure they'd be harping on it. The fact that PC ports these days are generally superior is just that, a fact. You're also forgetting that most multi-platform Quick Looks are on consoles and the comparison is most often "it looks better on PC but the console version is fine." If they're mentioning it specifically for this game, it means there's a wider gap than is normal or acceptable.

As someone who played all three versions of SR3, yes the PC version was better, but the PS3 version ran just fine. Now the 360 version was a mess of freezeing and frame rate problems, though it was still playable. I'm expecting something similar here.
