Quick Look: Sleeping Dogs: Zodiac Tournament

I reeeeaaaalllllyyyy want Brad to post his college papers.

This DLC starts off promising but wears thin pretty quickly. It was more entertaining just watching Vinny mess around in the city.

First off want to say ME is one of the best things this gen and I might agree with Jeff in calling ME2 the game of the gen. It's at least a debate for me anyways.

But...

Folks in it for old school RPGing from the makers of some of the best D&D vidja games ever, in it for the overt dice rolls and stats can certainly look at the otherwise mediocre cover shooter that is the core of ME2's gameplay and call it terrible. Especially for the "down the corridor" and "boxed in shooting gallery" a lot of the set pieces end up becoming. It's not a majority opinion or even an indepth analysis given universe, story, and characters are the main draws of Mass Effect and the combat is a lot more interesting when you go for a power class build. I can understand the notion from a superficial level and if it isn't what you expected or want then I can see superficial being all you engage in.

I for one would have loved the destructible environments promised in early ME1 videos as it then opens the doors for classes to not only play differently but actually experience the world differently where infiltrators can sneak, engineers hack, adepts blast, vanguards warp, maybe even sentinels chat others up, to get to alternate areas and only the soldier need kill everyone between themselves and the next weirdly discrete batch of badguys. In universe, I'm one of the baddest asses around (possibly ever) that has collected the next tier of baddest asses in the galaxy as my buddies, apparently I just have to hope there is one continuous path to my objectives, which on the surface wouldn't seem like a big concern given our collective awesomeness, but apparently locked doors are often impassable, even when bringing around a super thief.

I would have been interested to see an ME2 that had more dev time to work out the hybrid heat clips/cool down still buried in the game files so standard shooter fans would be comfortable running around collecting ammo that isn't ammo, while not stripping away an interesting (if imperfectly implemented) mechanism and lore from ME1.

Watched this live last night, was AMAZING as expected from pairing up Vinny and Sleepy Dawgs.

I love how Vinny just likes roaming around Sleeping Dogs showing it off. Got to play this soon.

I spent less than an hour on this game. Damn it was fun.

This should've been the game of the year.

I'm just going to say that Just Cause 2 looks bad ass and has way more mayhem possibilities, yet didn't get nearly the acclaim this game has gotten during its release. I hope Just Cause 3 gets some long overdue praise.

I did a double take when I saw the length.

This was great. Brad should ALWAYS utilize chat during a Quick Look - he's constantly blanking on info he should know, so it's good to have the community fill in said blanks.

Did you actually play Sleeping Dogs?

The story, characters and voice acting makes most of the rest of the genre look pretty stupid. Sure, Vinny goofs around a lot after having finished the game, but it's not the reason the game gets praise. It's the best GTA style openworld game I've played since Vice City.

@hollitz: I get his reasoning though. He still plays old school Bioware games regurarly and loves then from a PC gamers perspective. Mass Effect was a stripped down Bioware RPG made for consoles. They swapped PC RPG-ness for Console shooter-ness. Mass Effect 2 went even further towards the console shooter mindset, removing most of the gear and weapon upgrade options and any kind of inventory management.

I love old Bioware games, and I love Mass Effect games, but I think Dave really loves Bioware's old school style so much that Mass Effect is just a constant reminder that games are made for consoles these days, and the focus is on a game being recognizable to kids used to primarily shooters. Shame for him, the story arc over all three games is nothing short of amazing.

For as long he has played this, Vinny doesn't seem that great at it. Not knowing you can grab and throw big guys when your Face meter is full is one of the first things I noticed. It's kind of hard not to stumble on that fact, even if it's accidental like how I played.

Every Giant Bomb Sleeping Dogs video immediately starts with the crew getting Wei Shen as naked looking as possible.

"Alright, we may be friends, but we'll have to fight now"
