I've been liking this 'resurgence' of survival horror. Not really digging this one however.

From what I've seen on steam, this looks like garbage. Main problem being bland environments.

Is it me, or are we already starting to wear down this subgenre of horror games (the no-combat, interactive story type)? Feeling fatigued already...

This game looks bad. Bland environments. Weak scares. I can't see anything! I cranked the brightness all the way up on my monitor (which is lame to have to do given the genre) and it was still too dark to see much of anything. That wet torch is extremely annoying... not that you could see much even when it was lit. Ugh.

The artificial pitch-deepening applied to the voice of the main character is pretty off-putting. Were they just trying to set it apart from his Amnesia performance?

Yeah, that bothered me, too, and even when I'd tweak with the brightness settings in-game it wouldn't make enough of a difference to make it watchable without ruining the small effect the game did have.

If this was released in 2002 the graphics would be passable. Too bad jump scares aren't interesting.

If this, Huntsman and Paranormal is any indication of what to expect from horror games I don't like the direction the horror genre is going. I'd take RE6 or even 5 over these bland and cheap walking sims.

Some of the sound effects sounded like they were compressed stock sound effects. When the wooden structure fell down it had a really weird quality attached to it which didn't really mesh with the landing or character voice work sound effects.

The environments were way too open and way too dark, especially for a "sinister" dungeon. Maybe the dungeon should've felt a bit more claustrophobic for what was going on in there so you could "feel" the sense of no escape? Could've also made the puzzles a bit less gamey, such as making the fail state more lenient and kinda making the puzzle itself fit with the aesthetic of the world than a game of Simon Says.

Though, I'm no game designer. I'm sure there were reasons they chose to go this route and if this is the game they made it's the game they made.

The first chapter is pretty weak but the second chapter is cool. Not scary or revolutionary but I liked it. Plus this game is real damn cheap.

I'm well into chapter 2 in this game. I would say that this game is basically an "Adventure Game with a Horror Theme" and not a "Horror Game." I was put off a bit by it in the first half of the first chapter but have warmed up to it since as I came to grips with what kind of game it actually is.

I actually have started to enjoy the slow pace and lack of emphasis on jump scares and "oh look a monster" moments. I think it has been somewhat misrepresented as a horror game by the developers though, and that is probably going to hurt it a lot more than the actual quality of the game.

There are more varied gameplay scenarios as you progress but it still largely a "find this, jumper over that" experience. It may appeal to some people like very slow, non-gameplay-heavy experiences though. The horror competition is just too stiff at the moment for it to stand out.

Is it just me or is the screen essentially pitch black here? How can Patrick even play? I watched 15 minutes of this so far and for a genre that's supposed to be all about building tension this was among the most boring games I have ever seen a quick look of.

This was awful. Really bad. Those floor trap puzzles. I felt physical pain just enduring this. Probably this isn't a good slice showing what this game is about, but I really didn't like it.

Is this game related in any way to that other horror game called Stairs?

Starting to get bored with this genre. Not enough variation or innovation going on for the amount of games that are being pumped out.

Thanks for biting the bullet. Doesn't seem like this will be a winner. If it's an adventure game, how is the further writing and story revelations? Good enough to keep going or have you stopped?

Every horror game seems to want to be the next Amnesia and besides Outlast, they all seem to end up being incredibly boring. Bland setting, uninspired gameplay and just not very scary.

Horror games are pretty hit and miss as it is but everyone trying to do the same thing just ends up giving us games that aren't even bad in an interesting way.

I may not return to it at this point. There isn't enough story or context to keep the lack of gameplay interesting for me. It has some of the same problems Penumbra: Requiem had for me actually, except it has even less going on.

I have a great idea for a horror game!

  • You're a dude but you don't know who you are and your backstory is revealed through audio tapes/diary pages.
  • You have a torch/lantern/nighvision goggles/iPhone flashlight app and have to be careful because your light source is always draining at a stupidly fast rate.
  • Despite have fully functioning legs and arms you can't pick up anything remotely resembling a weapon AND you, for some reason, refuse to defend yourself when in a fight.
  • Oh and you LOVE exploring abandoned churches/asylums/mansions/caves.
  • You respect doors/grills/hatches wayyyy too much to ever kick them or break them open even if your life depends on it.
  • You don't need to eat or rest... but you do get fatigued from sprinting.
  • AND AND you're haunted by the ghosts of your past including your dead wife/kids/betrayed lover/dog.
  • Oh and at the end of the game it turns out you're in hell/already dead/the murderer/one of the crazy people.

I call it LOW BUDGET HORROR GAME NUMBER 153!!!

--

I do actually like Spookin With Scoops a lot ... and some of these games look interesting (especially Amnesia)... but I fear the well worn tropes of video game horror may overstay their welcome soon
