Quick Look: The Order: 1886

Yeah, give me a nice looking third-person shooter, a little steampunk, light Arthurian legend, heavy QTEs... Super widescreen it. To go.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

Videogames : it's not about gameplay anymore. Who would want that ? It's all about 'cinematic experience'.

I love it when a game comes out and it's the end of video games as we know it.

You are probably right. That's why I love being old : I used to play good stuff at the beginning of video games and I knew it. Nowadays, not so much...

I still really want to play this, this QL just confirmed to me that...it's why I like the feature so much. Even if I disagree with the guys' opinions, the game can often speak for itself. Short game means I can actually finish it, and I am a sucker for the setting.

Bit disappointed to hear that the story isn't great, but the characters and setting certainly seem interesting enough to carry it. The more cinematic experience is a good thing for me too, games like Heavy Rain are some of the best games I have played outside of visual novels lately.

Certainly not going to be most people's cup of tea, and I think a lot of people were expecting something as broad-reaching as the next Uncharted or something.

To me, all this stuff would work if there was something actually meaningful being set up. But just judging by what I've seen in this video, it all seems focused on going through a walkway of action scenes. Do you get a better sense of who the characters are and why they're worth caring for, or are they just there to provide a kooky fiction over? Cuz games getting tauted for having the "cinematic approach" yet do little else but run and gun seems a little too much of the same by now.

And, to just answer the God of War quandary Dan brought up, I personally found those games (based on what I played out of the first one and second one) to have a deeper experience in the genres it was touching on than what Jeff seems to be saying about the Order.

Surprise, Jeff doesn't really like the game. I would have been way more shocked if he did like the game actually. Jeff is all about speed and constant action. A methodically paced, heavily story driven experience would never really be his cup of tea, especially in an older setting.

Anyways, I've only played until the third chapter so far and am really enjoying it. Its been very story heavy until now, but that is exactly what I've needed as a palette cleanser.

I just finished it and was pleasantly surprised. As I expected, it has its shortcomings, but its worth playing through...At a lower price. Its one of those 3 star games that has something going for it, overall.

Frankly, its a game that was going to be critiqued hard, but fairly. And I think how heavily this was pushed as a big title is a major reason why. Otherwise, my guess is it would be seen more positively.

I would recommend waiting for the price to drop to your liking or rent it.

I posted this in the review comments as well, but since I think it's pretty useful for those interested playing this game NOW but don't want to spend more than $20....

If you think paying about $20 for this game would make the short length worthwhile, and would like to play it RIGHT NOW on release day, and don't want to wait for a year until they price drop it that low... here's how (though you'll probably need to do this ASAP, I can't imagine the trade-in price will stay up near $40 for long, especially with this game!):

Pre-order and/or just purchase the game anywhere you'd like. Then IMMEDIATELY setup a used game trade-in with Amazon. I just did it and the value is $40, they pay the shipping. And you have 7 days to postmark it, plenty of time to play and finish the game!

How much you wanna bet that if you waited a few days or a week until you finished it, and only THEN you setup the Amazon trade-in, that it would only be worth $20 by that time? :)

I feel that this should've been made into a movie like Final Fantasy: Spirits Within or something. But what if they wanted it to be like a movie? Some blu-ray movies cost $50 a disc, I think?

Then again, this is a game and a game has a different philosophy and methodology on its format of storytelling.

I am on chapter 7 and I fucking LOVE this game. Also, I seem on track to have about a 8-9 hour playthrough.

Dan's use of the word clamber was absolutely acceptable! Clamber: "an awkward and laborious climb or movement."

Yeah, I'm going to pick this up. It looks so nice and to be honest, while I wish the story was more expanded, I can dig what they game is doing. This convinced me to buy the game for sure.

It appears, some of the story will be familiar if you have read Charles Stross's "Laundry Files" books. If nothing else, a lot of the concepts and story memes are without a doubt flavored by "British Science Fiction" tropes.

Didn't one of the "Tomb Raider" games – between "Angel of Darkness" and the 2013 reboot – go the "ending available via DLC" route? I know "Prince of Persia (2008)" – the one with Nolan North, outside the "Sands of Time" continuity – did that as well.

The Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik company actually still do make the Zeppelin NT though it is way smaller than the cruise liner sized ones from the 1930s. The Debeers diamond company uses them to survey vast tracts of land in Africa. Passengers have to board and disembark simultaneously to stop the airship from floating upward when it's not lashed to the ground.

As a PC gamer, the letterboxing is a real deal-breaker for me. If your game can't render on the whole screen space (old 4:3 games excluded), you're doing something wrong. Aesthetically this has a really neat look but everything else seems so boring.

I love the game, the game is 100% what I expected it to be and I love the look and the atmosphere hope it sells enough so we get a sequel.

I also am probably the only person who bought all the modern warfare games just for the single-player so don't listen to me lol.

For a while this has made me a little sad for the folks at Ready at Dawn, since they made three great games on PSP that were lengthy and felt good to play. This might discount them from being the next big Sony game studio if this sells too badly. It made me wonder what happened in development for some of the content to be repeated as much as it is.

On the other hand It makes me wonder about if people would want a more structured mix of uncharted esque QTEs(where buttons are associated with actions) wrapped up in a shorter but more complete experience. Sometimes with games like the telltale ones I think there's a movement towards that. But for a game like this to be that I'd want the story to feel really combed over, combat to be polished to a high standard, and really every aspect of the short experience to be very very well made. On the other hand I wonder if in the future we might have a resurgence on the RE4 Difficulty style. In which changing an option actually adds or subtracts sections from the game, sometimes even changing how you control characters. Having that to help increase gameplay for those who might want longer sections that aren't as well polished or vice versa? Overall I do think games will tend to split towards the simulation-y super deep stuff, arcade like games focused on controlling well for action, the already staple puzzles and "experience" games like Bioshock infinite and Last of Us. I think this game stands to show what people expect from the latter.

I dont know, with the amount of hours they have me putting in at work I dont mind that its short. But I do love the way it carries itself as a game. The historical fiction in its narrative, the period piece time frame with Victorian London, the world building and lore. It also being a visual power house on the PS4.

It's a design students dream. And I love it because I am a designer, so I almost cant help but check it out.

I think Jeff needs to quick look some random crap indie game from Steam like Dan and Drew to reset his internal quality bar. Not like The Order is a 5 star game, but it feels like the "Jeff hates video games" (or at least ones he doesn't have nostalgia goggles for) schtick is getting closer and closer to reality every day.

I don't know, this game doesn't look like quality at all outside of its graphical and cinematic look. It looks like another incredibly generic and boring to play "triple A" cinematic shooter we've already had thrown at us for over 6 years. I know i've played enough of those, to know this game does not look like anything special, nor is it worth it's asking price.

After all the trash heaped upon this game, I thoroughly loved it. The world was very fleshed out and the story was great. They have a great base for a sequel and hope they make one.
