Unfinished: Returnal (04/22/21)

Weird embargo aside, this looks fun.

As a fan of Housemarque and Prometheus and roguelikes, I'm in.

That mid-air dash animation is terrible and really stands out considering all the other animations are fine.

This seems really cool and I'll definitely buy this after a 50%+ sale, cause as cool as it looks, it doesn't look 90CND$ cool.

@doctordonkey: yeah as a Canadian, it makes it real hard for me to ever pay that new price tag for a AAA game lol.

This gave me an intense flashback to running around Havarl in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Learning it was a roguelike, or roguelite and seeing the combat was discouraging. Watching Brad and Jan play through this has changed my mind. Looks interesting.

IS that the voice of Eva from Mass Effect 3?

Watching Brad buy that proficiency item was painful, especially after he had already come across two of the lesser versions of it that he couldn't collect due to the debuff he had.

This looks super cool to me. I understand the general sentiment of not wanting to pay 80$ for a roguelike but on my end I’m quite happy to have a AAA that has a different structures and seems willing to be *weird* over another open world.

What the fuck is the "low hanging fruit" joke?!?! Everytime they mention this game they allude to it, but the portmanteau is all that's obvious to me!!!!

Allowing a 45-minute preview of the game a week before release means that the developers are pretty confident that the game is going to be received well, is essentially free of bugs, and looks good.

I don't have a PS5, but this looks pretty cool.

This game looks so fun to control. As others are saying it sucks I can't frickin play it. What a glorious failure of a console launch.

Aah, I want to experience this myself before watching! Gotta keep waiting...though guess I'm lucky enough I only gotta wait for the game and not the console.

The most interesting thing about this whole game is the bullet-hell combat but done in an over the shoulder style. Reminds me ironically of Nier which is coming out this week. Other than that all the quirks I don't like about roguelites are still here.

Regardless like many others here I don't own a PS5 and have no way of getting one even if I wanted to.

Looks cool, but for me it would cost 86$, and Im not willing to pay that. Looks like Im not buying any new games at full price this generation.

Love the aesthetic, intrigued by the story, but the PS5 exclusivity (do you really need exclusives when people can't even buy your friggin' console?) and $70 price tag will keep me from playing this.

The voice actress for the main character sounded incredibly familiar. Turns out THAT...has a good reason. The game looks really cool too. I look forward to playing it once i get my hands on a PS5...sometime in 2022.

It's not currently announced for PC, but considering how Sony is moving with PC ports, I wouldn't be shocked if this game is announced for PC later this year or early next year. Plus it's UE4 so a port would be even easier than say Horizon Zero Dawn etc on a previously console only engine like Decima etc.

Mechanics look fun, but the rest of the game around them isn't really interesting at all so far, and i'm wondering how much of that is because it's a roguelike.

That UI is giving me Crysis vibes. Maybe it's the colour?

@brad 30:04 I think you couldn't collect the proficiency from the fabricator because your active malignancy disabled proficiency gain.

I would be all about this game if I could find a PS5. Roguelike with cool story-based reason for your looping runs? Heavily mobile third person shooting? Weird, gross, hard sci-fi aesthetic? Check, check, check.

Now if only PS5s were able to be purchased.

I'm definitely looking forward to this game, but I am worried about playing roguelikes post-Hades; that game really raised the bar by showing how great roguelikes can be when they focus on gamefeel and trimming down what detracts from the experience.

This is exactly what I pictured when seeing the announcement trailer and finding out it was being made by housemarque. I ended up finding a Series X and haven’t tried to get a PS5 since, but I definitely am interested in this game! It looks great!

Man, this looks so damn good. I adore Housemarque games. Literally the perfect mash-up of genre, mechanics and combat for me.

At the end, Brad mentioned the issue he has with rest mode and has done on the Bombcast before in the past - I've heard it quite a few times on other pods and sites too. Has anyone else had the same issues?

I've had my PS5 since about 2 weeks after launch and it is always in rest mode. In fact, I don't think I've ever turned the thing off since I got it and haven't ever had a single issue. Mind, I don't use any expansion drives whatsoever and that seems to be where the issues emanate from.

I picked Xbox this gen, but this is the only game that has made me regret that choice so far (I'm a long time Housemarque fan)

This looks good, but wow that 70 dollar price tag is a huge miss for me. I wouldn't say this a next generation looking, but it looks good nonetheless. I'm always down for rogue-likes and this one looks interesting enough to try out,, but that new hefty price tag that PS5 games come out at....sheeeeeesh, that's a hard pass for me.

I'd be 100% down for this if wasn't a rougelike.....

@clintdriftwood: I think alot of people are having issues with particular games and making the blanket statements about the console as a whole. That combined with Brad's tendency to be wary about new electronics are why he mentioned it, I assume.

I've had Oddworld, Demon's Souls and Miles Morales all crash if left open coming back from Rest Mode. Those three games have errored every time. So I've just made a habit to always close games out before entering rest mode.

With the way Sony keeps shutting down functions like communities, parties, and digital marketplaces (though Jim Ryan paused that for PS3 and Vita for now), I'm not touching the PS5 with a 10-foot pole, even if I could find one.

Returnal looks interesting, though not $70-interesting. I hope it gets a PC release one day and I would pick it up on a Steam or GOG sale.

Man i wish i could go down to my local game store and just pick-up a PS5.

Anyone else think that "silphium" is an awfully strange choice of name for a resource in a space game? The extinct Roman boner plant exists in the stars?
