So nice to see Dave back!

If any are curious, there is an entire Icewind Dale playthrough with Dave and Ian online. Don't think this is 2 though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTdUsbY3d70&list=PLTI4cZF5y64p4SwtqQ8JgNAx7_42BA3nP

What's Rorie's shirt from? Third eye and the 'fro reminds me of Garnet from Steven Universe. I tried to google it and then this happened and I don't even.

@rorie

Hi! ancient D&D vet here trying to be helpful.

Judging from your frustration, You may want to pass on some of the older infinity engine things. Those systems were for D&Ders who regularly cracked through 200 pages of rules and then went to the hobby store and bought an expansion. If you just try to brute force a solution the game will rebuff you and harshly. I love those games deeply, but that's what it was.

The whole point of that type of game is knowing the rules and engaging it with it's tools. If you want to not miss all the time you have to understand the percentages of combat, feats, to hit values, pick appropriate feats and weapons etc. If you want to cure ability damage, you gotta know how and when you got it, and how to fix it. and when it's too bad (like -8 at lvl 1) You gotta know when to tip over your king and reload to before that happened.

Easiest solution might be to let someone else build the character, pick feats, etc. so you can auto attack and feel good about the results.

If you want to get into the rules yourself, maybe take a minute to let Dave or Chat do some more serious 3.0/.5/pathfinder instruction, or google some answers on the fly maybe. That's the modern solution that people do when needing to find a specific rule construction after all. Even the most hardcore don't know every rule, and each of these games had to make some concessions.

If you want to none of that, great, just please tone down the complaining about the systems. To someone who has been deep into those systems for a very long time it's like watching someone trying to play a platformer without understanding how to jump properly. If that's the video and how you want to spend your time that's fine, but complaining the systems are bad or confusing is really hard to listen to. They're just games that necessitate some homework.

TL,DR: Please give the systems some benefit of the doubt

@shingro: This has been going on for a decade and is one of the most frustrating things with these guys. I love most of their content but they constantly don't read prompts or look into how things work and then complain about them. Look at their Crusader Kings 2 quicklook where they showed absolutely nothing about what makes CK2 great and just fought some wars which are basically the worst part of the game. Or god the Ryan/Patrick Brono Trigger run where they literally were not reading the screen saying that fire doesn't work on such and such enemy and then complaining about how unintuitive the combat was.

Just have to let it go because it is never going to change.

@tobiasparker: Dude it's been 7 years and you're complaining about the Chrono Trigger Endurance Run? They played as any other first time player would. The only big thing they did wrong was the one episode where they were in 2300 AD and they walked across the whole map to get back to the End of Time.

@shingro: I mean, I've beaten Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale II, NWN, NWN2, etc., and we've done Pathfinder streams in the past, so I'm plenty familiar with the D&D 3.5 and its PF branch although it's obviously been a while in terms of the specifics. I just don't think a 1:1 adaptation of PNP rules makes for a super compelling video game to me at this point in time, especially when you compare them to the other two games here. I mean, getting attacked three or four times while trying to rest just doesn't strike me as all that fun. It might be in strict adherence to the PNP rules, and more power to them, but again, for me right now I don't really feel like I want to spend 80 hours with Kingmaker. If you really dig it, then more power to you; Dave sure seems to like it.

@shingro: In fact, I forgot to mention it, but I actually worked on NWN2: Storm of Zehir. I have a lot of fondness for D&D and Pathfinder, but in terms of making for a fun video game, I think POE2 and Divinity are more up my alley right now. The rest/fatigue system specifically strikes me as being something that could be safely removed from a computerized version of Pathfinder with few drawbacks; Obsidian seems to have removed it from POE2 to that game's credit. It's great that the PNP rules are what they are but a CRPG doesn't need to adapt all of them.

So glad to see that Rorie finally got a chance to play some of these games on a stream!

As someone who loves these sorts of games, and is currently playing/GMing 3 different Pathfinder campaigns, I have to say that the D&D/PF system does not translate into real time with pause combat in video games. I made a similar comment in a thread about this game a few months ago, but basically there is something about all characters moving and attacking and casting spells in the same 6-second turn that causes many AoE spells to simply not be effective.

I agree about the resting mechanic. It's so weird (in both tabletop and video games). I often try to avoid doing that for RP reasons, but just last night in PoE I had a party member with only 1 HP and the only way to keep her from dying in the next fight was to rest beforehand.

When it comes to turn based mechanics, I'm playing Divinity Original Sin 2 with my brother and I really like that system.

Glad to see Deadfire get a bit of coverage here, even if belated. Was always surprised that neither Vinny nor Rorie looked at it.

That game is fantastic and its a shame that it didn't sell very well. I think Obsidian fumbled a bit with marketing because a lot of people I knew weren't even aware it had been released despite being fans of the first game.

I can't believe Rorie isn't using one of the premade characters in Divinity II. It makes the game considerably more involving because each has their own personal story that adds a bunch of scenes, dialogue, and changes the main narrative.

I only caught a bit of this live but wanted to mention that POE 2 does have a rest/camp mechanic. It's necessary to replenish empowerment as well as many of the more powerful abilities. It also cures injuries and you can feed your party members various foods to give them a roughly day long buff

Loved this, would like to see more videos like this. Old school CRPGs are still unmatched in complexity and depth as far as I'm concerned. It's great to see all these games coming out and keeping the genre alive.

I keep dreaming of a future where everyone wants way deeper RPGishness to them.. All the 3rd and 1st person games these days have RPG mechanics, but they are so incredibly shallow that they don't really add anything to the game other than satisfying progression (Which is obviously welcome. I'll take what I can get..). Just wish newer games just dug in much deeper and gave us a reason to replay a game over and over with wildly differing gamestyles. Like, it's unlikely we'll see a necromancer in Far Cry anytime soon...But how awesome would that be? Sounds like a dream come true to me, but maybe the market is just me and 3 other people? Who knows..

I always wondered why there are so few CRPGs covered on here, as they're my favorite kind of games, but then I remember that there is a lot of reading, saving and loading, backtracking for quests, etc. I'm super glad to finally see some CRPG content and can't wait to watch the video and see how it feels!
