Man that was an epic run Patrick. Further than I ever got in all my dozen or so hours I got obsessed with it. I'll be happy to watch any further Spelunking with Scoops.

P.S. I think it sucks that the Daily Challenge is ranked by the amount of treasure you collect.

It should be ranked by progress, and then treasure. I just can't bring myself to care about how much treasure I collected.

When you've exhausted the normal style of progression and learning, maximizing your collection of treasure is all there is left, really. I didn't quite care about treasure & score at all early on (and by early on I mean the first 50-80 hours) aside from having enough to buy the items I want, I doubt the real new players feel differently. There's so much to grasp and understand and conquer in the beginning that score is the last thing on your mind and the depth is not readily apparent. Seen so many people mention how they quit Spelunky for good after a few hours because they didn't get it or couldn't get into it. But if and when it does hook you and after your skill pretty much plateaus and you've beat the game the normal way, done it the speedlunky way, and have or know you can do it the hard way and defeat Hell and King Yama , the high score hunt is pretty much all that's left. Aside from lowering your speed run time or doing crazy stuff like the impossible for 99.99% eggplant run.

The ones who progress the furthest still have the likeliest chance to get the highest score and most treasure, but not always. It's often a strategic trade-off in wasting bombs for more treasure, trying to collect it all including the idols, risking health and life for a few gems beyond those traps and enemies, stretching your time in each level to the max so you can grab it all. Then there's higher level stuff like ghostrunning or angering the shop keepers and stealing all the items rather than paying for them, to hoard your gold and boost your score. It still shows the stage you died on the leaderboard, so it's not like you can't see who made it furthest of your friends in The Daily Challenge, but it's really all about the high score like classic arcade era games.

Trying to afford the Ankh in the Black Market and learn what it could do was what originally started me down the path of caring about the treasure. I wanted enough to buy it for $50,000 and still have surplus for bombs and other items. Not always easy to do in the first handful of levels! At least not initially.

Awesome game, awesome video. I'm surprised how well Patrick did after playing for such a short time, I don't think I got that good that quick. I hope you stick with the game, @patrickklepek!

I picked up Spelunky on the Vita when it was on sale for $3.75, and it really rekindled my love for the game (especially with the Daily Challenge stuff on the PSN version), I've been back into it for the last couple weeks. I finally bested Olmec for the first time while playing on the Vita, even after a couple hundred runs on the XBLA version. It was a great feeling!!! (Now to try and get to hell...)

Speaking of, I gotta say, I was really impressed with the bomb trap that Patrick was putting together, I thought he had it for sure. I had never tried anything like that, I usually just run under Olmec back and forth, using bombs once I get near the bottom. The one run recently that I had the jetpack + shotgun combo (which is crazy good), I ended up accidentally getting squished by Olmec, but then I came back a couple runs later with way worse items, not many bombs, and somehow won after a long drawn out battle. Spelunky be crazy.

I love Patrick's hubris of "I've only been playing since Friday and look how good I am!!"

Knowing full well that he'll never make it that far again (without the jetpack/shotgun combo, anyway).

Surprised you got to Olmec already. Only a few days ago you were complaining about the mines and jungles. Props!

Well @patrickklepek you did it, you inspired me to give Spelunky another shot. I had played it only a couple of times and managed to get to the jungle, but struggled so much. After a little bit I actually managed to get to the temple, and now I am hooked on it.

@patrickklepek these are good tips. You missed the mattock at the bottom of the snake pit twice. Its always there and saves you the need of bombing your way out. Also whenever you kill a vampire he leaves a cape.

A handful of some basic non-spoilery Spelunky tips for you:

  1. You can whip items off an edge—easier than dropping them a lot of the time.
  2. Rats will take an arrow hit for you.
  3. There's always a mattock (“pickaxe”) at the bottom of a snake pit if you bomb it.
  4. Unless you really need the health, sacrifice the damsel whenever you can. You can also sacrifice corpses and live enemies that don't die in one hit.
  5. You can float onto spikes safely when you have the cape

P.S. I think it sucks that the Daily Challenge is ranked by the amount of treasure you collect.

It should be ranked by progress, and then treasure. I just can't bring myself to care about how much treasure I collected.

A couple days ago I got all the way to the entrance to 5-1 with the items required, without realizing I had to use Olmec as a platform to get in. Fuck this game.

I would watch this on the regular. I just don't find DOTA all that accessible, since I haven't the foggiest what's going on. I also really liked when I watched Anthony Birch of HAWP would post daily SPELUNKY videos.

I had been playing the game blind and I've never had a shotgun. I got the jet pack very early on, but didn't know to activate it and died. I've made it three times to the temple and died on the first stage.

Watching Patrick I've learned that you NEED the shotgun to make real progress. I'm somehow always short on money, with no shop keeper to sell me nice things, and nothing but useless stuff in crates.

I loved the video. I'm just surprised that someone who writes so passionately about women in video games, you didn't choose the random damsel option (even though a damsel, by definition, is a woman). But if you just want to rescue women, that's cool too. Just an option I thought you'd like to know about.

That was awesome. You're going to hell in no time, Patrick! Also, you actually did pretty dang well in the temple considering you didn't know what any of those enemies do.

I've watched a bit of this being played, @patrickklepek , and I gotta say the combo of you learning and educating us on what you know so far is engaging. The items and deaths and mechanics can be incomprehensible if you haven't played, so your narration is great! Also, that was very entertaining failure.

Those of you talking about how shitty the chat was, let me tell you it was nowhere near as bad as Load Our Last Souls. The people who watch LoLS seem to want Rorie and Ian to shut up and let Vinny fail. Here, people just wanted Patrick to play better. He kept making silly mistakes and surviving, which was still fun to watch. I guess there isn't that level of schadenfreude with this game as there is with Dark Souls. Maybe it's the lack of carryover progression.

This is a fantastic feature. I love watching roguelikes, but not so much playing them, And Spelunky, in my opinion, is one of the best mostly because it doesn't have the whole pointless "you have to unlock the really useful items by doing random objectives" thing that almost every roguelike now has. Also Patrick really surprised me, he has a really good grasp on the core mechanics, and could totally become a god at this game with time. Keep it up Scoops!

I also started playing Spelunky recently, I've opened the shortcuts all the way to the Temple but that place is rough when you don't have any upgrades.

Such a great video, spelunky runs are so tense to watch, especially the few times you managed to -just- avoid death by some miraculous means. But the whole time you watch knowing that it will be some minor mistake that causes death, as always, and lo.

The seed in the Temple was exceptionally kind too, giving a nice clear run through with barely any lava and only a couple of the awful crushing blocks. Next time you make it there I can only imagine the horrors...

Between this and his Dark Souls run yesterday was amazing. Somebody's probably pointed this out but there's a pick axe at the bottom of every(at least most of) snake pit.

@patrickklepic I don't care what anybody says, that was great fun to watch and I hope you keep it up! I'd really appreciate it if you explained some more detail as to how the game works. Specifically, how,to unlock the guy that "warps" you to other stages. I work 12hr graveyard shifts in the ER and this content is always a great end to my night. Thanks!
