I almost beat Olmec today.

I know that has little to do with what Patrick said in this video today, but whatever.

Oh, good! I showed up late and couldn't watch much of today's Spelunking because I was too busy killing Yama and then falling to my death trying to make it to the exit.

DAMN IT.

I got to the gold city for the first time a few days ago and didn't make it out. Now I just need to do it on a daily.

I remembered why I stopped watching this feature live and without knowing how things went beforehand: watching Patrick pull these stunts is giving me an ulcer, as I mutter "God DAMNIT, Klepek!" over and over to myself.

Edit: La-Mulana is hard as hell, but really well made. Music is great too!

He keeps saying he got to Yama, did I miss an episode? The last one (in the CAH offices) he died in the Ice Caves and the one before that died in Hell...

He got to hell twice in that episode you speak of and the first time he made it to Yama.

It seems like you're set on playing La-Mulana, which is cool... but if this feature goes on long enough and you end up playing more and more games, I highly recommend checking out Dungeons of Dredmor.

It's pretty different from Spelunky, but it's got permadeath & has a whole bunch of really interesting loot...

Steam says I've sunk 32 hours into it already, yet I'm still not sick of it. It's a pretty fantastic game. :)

Plus, the game is built around the player trying new & different strategies and seeing how far they can get, so I feel like it would fit into the feature perfectly.

Ya there's so much better jazz(and music in general), i.e. Dave Brubeck's Take Five comes to mind immediately as a better song.

Not to say Spelunky doesn't have very nice tunes, because it does.

Watching (and interacting) with chat is why I like this morning stream. Also seeing Patrick get reminded why Spelunky is a difficult game is fun too.

A roguelike feature sounds really cool. I'd watch it as long as there is some variety.

What happened to doing Banner Saga!?

It's not really a roguelike at all (more a Metroidvania coupled with Fez-level note taking and puzzle solving unless you are some sort of savant), but I approve of the idea of going down the La Mulana rabbit hole. Maybe Patrick will get farther than I did!

I was trying to get as far as I could without consulting a walkthrough, and I quit playing when I got completely stuck instead of breaking my self-inflicted vow. The combination of the amount of freedom the player is given to explore a fairly big world, Metroidvania-style items that can open new paths, and incredibly cryptic puzzles makes for one hell of a difficult game. There were many times where I couldn't tell if I was stuck because I didn't have the right item or if it was a solvable puzzle, but I just wasn't paying attention to some minute detail on the other side of the world. But despite all that, it's a cool fucking game. I'm pretty proud of how far I got - just getting figuring out how to get to the first boss is an accomplishment in and of itself.

As someone who played a ton of Spelunky and went to La Mulana, I have to say that La Mulana plays doesn't even begin to touch Spelunky in terms of how fair and sharp it plays. Even the original free-ware Spelunky isn't good enough to earn what Spelunky does.

Binding of Isaac is a great choice. Word of caution should you choose to play it: it is not the best idea to install the DLC right away as doing so will significantly increase the difficulty of the entire game and you cannot turn it off without using a mod tool. Trying to learn Isaac with Wrath of the Lamb content active can be very frustrating.

That explains a lot. I wanted to like it, but I just lost patience with the game after awhile. Waaay too much variance in luck.

After playing it for awhile now, I feel like Spelunky has the perfect balance for a game of its genre. The game gives you enough control and authority over what happens that if you screw up it's your own fault 99% of the time.

FTL is somewhere in-between Binding of Isaac and Spelunky, but it's still a little too punishing for me. Still a great game though.

@patrickklepek I'd also suggest Sword of the Stars: The Pit if you've got the stomach for more brutally hard games with procedurally generated levels. One of the unnoticed gems of 2013.

I'd also say it's as close to the idea of a pure roguelike as I've played in recent memory, if I was confident in what the definition of roguelike even currently is...in MY current definition anyway.
