Old Games: Super Nintendo 64 Super Stream!

$150 for a dongle? Damn. I wonder if this will encourage Nintendo to make a N64 Classic so they can get a piece of the action.

Dang, was really hoping there'd be more variety. There are so many weird and quirky titles to revisit.

Not necessarily. Obviously you wanted to buy the classics, but I got suckered into buying some real pieces of crap too! (NES X-Men because I was a comic geek, Mickey Mousecapade as a gift from Grandma oooooh...). And some of my favorites were rentals I never bought like Castlevania 3!!!

At my house, my Dad hated video games. He has come around now. But when me and my brother had an NES - it was one game each at birthdays, and one game each at Xmas. Sometimes I could get another relative to drop cash on an extra game at one of those holidays. But my brother wasn't into games like me. So you are talking 4-6 new games a year tops, that's it. And with no allowance there was no way I was buying games on my own (being 6-12 range at the time of NES).

But I could always get money for rentals, and my Dad never seemed bothered by that. So every weekend was always the excitement of going to the rental store, (our video store was themed, had really cool decked out rooms for every genre - from Saloon doors and cactus for the Westerns, to the horror room looked like Evil Dead shack and had spiderwebs and creepy lights etc); the joy of getting a game for the weekend, usually with a buddy. Picking by cover art. Hoping our saves carried over and we got it the next weekend again if it was a game we were trying to keep playing. And then of course trading games and borrowing games from each other was huge with me and my friends. i had a friend who would always get the brand new games, and once he was done i could usually borrow them...

i remember a time, like Rorey and Bionic Commando -- me and my bro did something good, and my Dad let us get Mega Man 2 out of the blue, (only time I ever remember getting a game not at a holiday), we beat it that night, my brother was pale white and like "DO NOT TELL DAD WE BEAT THIS IN ONE NIGHT!!!". Luckily i enjoyed MM2 and played it over and over again anyway :)

I could totally get behind a Star Fox stream or retrospective show on each game in the series.

I feel like Brad was fishing for this at the beginning, but it is as they say, "the squeaky chair gets the thing, sorry Brad."

For those looking for a way to get an N64 (or any console of that generation) running on your modern tv, you could purchase an RCA to HDMI adapter off of Amazon for the much more appealing price of 15 U.S. dollars. Some company named GANA makes the one I bought.
This is what I use to play my N64 on a modern tv. The one I have only converts up to 1080p, which is very mushy looking on a 4k screen, but it certainly works, and it is certainly much more affordable than this $150 one.
Do your research and weigh your options! You might save yourself a bit of dosh in the process.

It's been a long time since I watched Super Mario 64 being played by anyone other than pannen, so this feels weird.

Brad and Ben, multiple times, directly to Rorie: "It has a feature called 'Slick Mode'."

Rorie, five minutes later after careful inspection of the box and seeing the feature in action: "That button is called Slick Mode!"

Great stream, I hope it's not just a one off - there's loads more great N64 games to delve into.

@captainspectacular: Must be an Everdrive or something very similar, even though they don't seem to know what an Everdrive is early in the stream.

Rorie playing Pokemon with undisguised disdain is a thing I didn't know I needed in my life. Glorious!

That button should have been called shit mode. Putting ungodly amounts of blur on the output is not slick.

I feel like they're being a bit too flippant at the start of the video. Many newish hdtv's don't even have inputs for composite or S-video, and if they do the image quality would be terrible and introduce a lot of input lag. This thing's main feature is upscaling the resolution to 480p and outputting over hdmi, not the "slick button" or whatever they're calling it. For those that have large retro collections it's nice to be able to streamline your setup and not be required to own an older CRT just to play your old consoles.

I enjoyed this very chill stream. The N64 was a console I skipped, so my primary exposure to it consists of Nitro Rad videos. It's nice to see the games live and hear memories from those who played through the era.

To me, Mario 64 is the best game ever made. I'd be fine playing it for the rest of my life, it's timeless.

I'm probably one of the few people who really doesn't care for Star Fox 64. The soundtrack sucks and I think it was a major mistake to move away from the garblespeak of the first one. The voice acting is repetitive and obnoxious.

Miss you Jeff, would've been nice if you were here instead of these 3 guys who don't know anything about this dongle. Heard about the baby though so you take that time off y'hear?

Why pay $150 for 1 console when you can get an RCA to HDMI converter upscaler for around $30 and be able to hook up multiple consoles

Love you Rorie but you are one weird bloke. The whole point of this device is to get better video to your TV easily, not the filter button.

Then again Brad only explains it once and with Rorie you need to explain things more than once and be sure he's looking you in the eyes when you do.

@djredbat: But those converters are really shitty for 240p content and it's still composite video only which means a lot of added video noise. I'd say the best thing to get is the RetroTink 2x, it can take S-Video which is what this Eon box in the video takes.

Shout out to Jan for getting clean audio. That demo of the raw output of the sound was nasty.

Our big game at get togethers was Turok 2 Deathmatch all raptors or 3v1 raptors vs one guy with grenades. It was dumb and hilarious.

Pokemon stadium that released 20 years ago has better animations than the upcoming ones.

Also Brad was smiling so much during the Vulpix comeback, I bet he's secretly into Pokemon now.

Starfox 64 is pretty good.

@brad is correct about Space Station Silicon Valley's studio turning into Rockstar North. I believe this was the first notable game that Leslie Benzies was the lead programmer on.

It kills me that they didn't use the warp in bob omb batlefield.

Also you can see the menu in the reflection over Brad's shoulder and it looks like it could be 64drive, not Everdrive.

I read the title as "Super Mario 64 Super Stream" and got super fucking excited for 2+hours of SM64... then I reread the title and got bummed. :(

Man Star Fox 64 was badass. I used to play through it every day after school.
