I'm not happy Visceral got shut down but I'm glad they're go back to the drawing board on Star Wars. They haven't shown anything from that game but it sounded like that was gonna just be an Uncharted clone with a star wars skin and that sounds awful. The gaming industry doesn't need more super linear, heavily scripted mediocre shooters with forced slow walking and a sarcastic dude as the protagonist. They'll probably still screw it up because EA is a mess right now but I'm a bit more interested to see what they do now.

In a sea of procedurally generated, run based indie titles that lack character because of their "infinitely replayable" nature, I am all for a beautifully hand crafted, linear, 8-12 hour triple A game once or twice a year. Especially if it's in the Star Wars universe which I really enjoy.

Well you're in luck! battlefront 2 comes out this year with that sort of campaign.

I just wish AAA developers would take more chances but they usually won't because they have to appeal to everyone. Especially Star Wars that has to appeal to people who normally don't play games.

That campaign is actually reported to be in typical Battlefront fashion very plain and somewhat of a tack-on to what is obviously the main draw of the multiplayer component. Ironically I was originally going to cite Battlefront II as an example of more Star Wars that is unfortunately locked away behind the "Battlefield" banner (I realize it's Battlefront, but really it's just Battlefield with a paintjob) where you're kinda getting the Star Wars vibe but sadly it's only through a very rote multiplayer lens.

I do absolutely agree that I wish developers took more risks, but at the same time it's hard for me to fault them. IF a developer creates this amazing, out of left field experience, and then it doesn't sell and they go under, thats a heavy price to pay for a game that only a select group of gamers will defend on message boards and no one else bought. I really loved Dragons Dogma because it was so weird and different and full of smart, innovative systems - and it's awesome that it got re-released a bunch but how many many people bought that game over like Destiny or even Skyrim? You're constantly catering to the lowest common denominator in order to sell the most units, and thats a tough thing to deal with unless you've got carte blanche like Rockstar does with Take Two.

@humanity: battlefront is absolutely not Battlefield with a paint job. I would kill for that because that would actually be good.

I would love a new awesome star wars campaign but I don't think we're ever gonna get that. EA I'd in a terrible place and Disney is way too over protective of the license. I also wasn't excited for 1313 either. It was a gorgeous game but it looked so bland when they showed it off. The only one that sounded interesting was the canned Darth Maul game.

I'll play battlefront's campaign just because it was written by the spec ops the line dude but that's really it. I'm sure the gameplay and level design will be bad but maybe I can get a decent story out of it

@droner: I can understand where you are coming from, however some friendly counterpoints - It wasn't complaints from a random twitter guy, it was a complaint from a former employee. Second, it doesn't sound like Sony/Naughty Dog investigated it. They responded within 24 hrs saying they had no record of previously receiving a complaint - They are receiving it now, so that point is mute. Third, it isn't Sony/Naughty Dog's responsibility to provide evidence to support accusations against them, it's their responsibility to provide a safe working environment for their employees. If there are allegations of harassment by someone towards another, they need to investigate to ensure either it's not still happening or if it is happening that it stops. Not because they are trying to prove the company's "guilt," but because they are protecting their employees.

@mems1224: how is it not Battlefield apart from small details like getting in and out of vehicles instead of spawning into them or the non destructive environments? It’s a large scale FPS with classes, which for better and worse Battlefield has always been the identifying product.

Yah I wish it was more gritty and “realistic” if that makes sense in the case of Star Wars, but it is pretty much Battlefield.

@humanity: the classes from what I played in the beta were pretty shallow and didn't offer the versatility that BF classes offer. Also, no squads, no bullet drop, faster TTK, no spotting and I could be wrong but I don't think it had a 64 player mode. It's a very different game from Battlefield. The only similarities is that it's a Fps and it uses frostbite

Some of the games that could be included on the Gamecube Mini include:

  • Mario Sunshine
  • Smash Bros: Melee
  • Luigi's Mansion
  • Wind Waker
  • Mario Kart Double Dash
  • Beyond Good & Evil
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • F-Zero GX
  • Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Ikaruga
  • Killer 7
  • Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
  • Metroid Prime
  • Odama
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
  • Pikmin
  • Tales of Symphonia
  • Viewtiful Joe

Though I doubt this would be a thing if Nintendo are planning to releasing Gamecube emulation on the Switch. All of the above would be more than welcome on the Switch though!

@mems1224: it’s closer to Battlefield than to Call of Duty, but I guess it’s all semantics in the end and not really worth arguing about.

The gameplay does seem a lot more “flat” which is why it doesn’t really do a whole lot for me and I’d prefer a single player Uncharted type experience.

If they can't stop talking about wrestling on the Beastcast can they at least make it another addendum like the kiss on the cheek segment? I know they had an actual WWE game to talk about and that's fine but as always they veer into the "real" wrestling yet again, something I just don't like to listen too at all and something that gets way too much air time. They even did a show focused on wrestling while playing wrestling games and still have to continue the conversation in the Beastcast. I'd like it to at least be easy to skip.

I was happy they read my corrections email about Star Control 1/2, but immediately after I sent it I realized that Vinny wouldn't be there to hear it and I was sad. I think he'd enjoy Star Control 2 the most of all the crew.

I love listening to the beastcast but I really can't stand the wrestling chat. I know that both Alex and Dan are big fans of WWE but they must appreciate how divisive that subject is to their audience, and when there's already a whole video series entirely devoted to wrestling news it seems extra unnecessary.

Vinny-less Beastcast... that's too bad, but he deserves some rest. Jeff B. hosting though, please, no. He's already aggressively dismissive about anything he doesn't care about, giving him that much power will just exacerbate things.

My Beastcast dudes, don't ever feel like you should hold back on what you believe because some folks who are used to not having to think about video games in a broader cultural context get salty about it. Use that platform for good and for awesome.

Jeff B's line about heroin (which I can't remember now because I'm posting over a day after I heard it) in the EA/Visceral/single-player games discussion was golden. So was his impressions of the emails and corrections calls. He was just on point all around.

Jam -> wipe the knife off on the slice of bread you didn't put the jam on -> peanut butter. Results in almost no cross-contamination. Easy.

Surprised the GBeast crew didn't know that Dead Space 1, 2 and 3 are on PC and have been for quite a while especially considering how prominently promoted they've been on Steam and Origin sales for the past few years.

Love Dead Space though. Been hoping for a reboot or a revisiting of the franchise for some time now. Not going to happen now though.

@plethomacademia: By that logic I'm guessing you also have a problem with Call of Duty, Devil May Cry, and Street Fighter? Any game that requires fast reflexes are off the table for people with physical disabilities. A sad fact of life.

Should we develop ways for disabled people to play these games. Absolutely(Science is making steady progress in this field). Should we limit game development/design to only games that disabled people can play. Absolutely not.

Not every game is for everyone and there has never been more choice/variety in the game industry. I'd like to keep it that way, not homogenize things to appease one group or another.
