The mental image of Vinny standing over his rig with a blower in one hand, and a sucker in the other, so dust doesn't go everywhere while he cleans it out, is hilarious.
My entire week was this cast's talk about cable management, plug in pressurized air, moving heavy equipment, installing SSD's, replacing GPU's, moving hell of heavy stuff and eventually, today, thinking i was actually sick from having blown the dust from my PSU out of the case indoors (too excited from the ease at which replacing my GPU to a 2080ti I suppose) RIGHT IN TO MY OWN FACE, shrugged it off, and woke up this morning with a headache, full congestion and eyes so dry blinking was hard to do without drops.
Dusting your PC? GET THAT SHIT OUTSIDE. Or, a vac. Either way, this is not the first time this has happened to me, but I hope it is the last time I forget what happens when inhaling metal/misc dust collected inside a computer.
Good hot spot ep, i love em all, look forward to more. Thanks guys.
I had planned to dust my PC when my 64GB DDR4 from Amazon arrives but USPS tracking says there was an issue but no message left on our door. It's been a year or two since I've opened it up or dusted so installing new RAM will give me that opportunity.
The windows store app and Xbox app is unbelievably bad. Gears 5 corrupted on me and could not keep playing on PC 2 hours from the end. Eventually was able to continue on Xbox. Tried reinstalling on PC several times after figuring out how do delete the locked folders. Before that, it wanted to take 80 gb of my 500 gb ssd and would not uninstall from the apps. Had similar issues with other games during a windows game pass trial.
If your PC case is in the way, maybe consider small form facter? The SFF market is doing extremely well right now, with a ton of interesting cases coming out on the regular. I have a Dan A4 and a Sliger SM850 myself. The build quality of these cases is insane. The Sliger even has a little handle on it!
Favorite podcast from the crew, love you all. I recently bought Minecraft java thinking I could play with gamepass people, I didn't do any research until I bought a realm. Well boy I'm upset and keeping my server??? I'll see you all soon. Skate 4
Winamp was the first PC audio player I used since I started using a PC, that was when I was in my mid-to-late teens. I'm now much older and still use Winamp for certain things, even though like others I mainly moved on to Foobar and such.
I had the exact same issues as everyone else with the Microsoft Store and I never fixed it.... UNTIL!I reinstalled windows and it just worked! But what was actually happening, was for years I would move my AppData folder from my SSD to my HDD, windows gives you the option to do it, so it should be fine... right?
Well, Microsoft Store fucking hates it. I only "fixed it" because I finally got an SSD big enough to not care where AppData was

Got the Ncase M1 my self and love it to pieces. Probably the easiest case i have ever worked in. Even compared to bigger ones.
@pikapomelo: for a software giant a lot of their native apps really are just awful both in form factor and pure performance. They had that Xbox Companion App and Game Pass app and now they’re rolling them both into one but the new app basically loses all the community features of the companion app. All that carried over is a friends list and even then it took me a solid minute trying to figure out how to message someone from the friends list.
I had a game that wouldn’t uninstall because something got stuck and eventually had to end up installing all 40gb of it from the Windows store so that I could successfully uninstall it from the Game Pass app.
I really like the Xbox Phone App...but remote installing games NEVER works. Not just sometimes, it has literally never once worked for me properly. The PS4 app was clunky and bad but when you told it to start downloading something when you were at work it did it. I’ll queue something up from Game Pass, come home, and it’s not even in my Xbox queue.
It is really bizarre how BAD they are at this UI stuff. As much as I defend the XB1 dashboard as not being that bad when you get used to it, I have to admit that now after I’ve dusted off my base PS4 for TLOU2 the PS4 XMB REALLY is just miles better. Even on the XB1X it’s not very smooth and a lot of simple things feel like they’re always on the verge of crashing or stalling out. Good luck editing any clips on the XB1 - my success rate is 50% and it’s an incredibly clunky process.
Talking about dumb terminals and garage-based cloud computing is the reason why I personally love Stadia. I understand all of the ownership complaints, yada yada yada, but I just want to play a fucking game, and if it's on Stadia then that's where I'll go. If it's a good port, the game looks and runs beautifully on my fanless low-powered Chromebook (the game being a good port has nothing to do with it running well on my Chromebook, was just illustrating that some games are shit ports on Stadia, compared to say the amazing Division 2 port).. I sometimes stream to my Chromebook from my gaming PC that's a floor away, but Parsec warms my Chromebook up at least 10C hotter than a Stadia stream does. I do want to get more into Linux, so maybe in the future I'll build a Linux gaming rig once my Win10 rig finally dies (8yo right now).
I appreciate that they came to the same Winamp discovery I did recently. I looked it up out of boredom a couple months ago and was shocked that not only it still exists, but is being updated. I downloaded it and it still works great. They took a lot of the junk that was in it 10 years ago out so now it's just a straight up music player/internet radio app again.
@csl316: Foobar2000 is an audio player like iTunes. VGMStream is a library that lets foobar2000 play various forms of video game music. You can find more info here: https://vgmstream.losno.co/
I've been using MusicBee after leaving Winamp back in 2013...2014? I changed the layout on it and everything and I like it for what it is. I used to have a whole bunch of game music just like Jeff, but I haven't gotten around to using those plugins within MusicBee, so my collection just sits around un-listened to.
I remember trying to get into foobar2000, but I left it along with MediaMonkey after getting into MusicBee and never looked back.
I think the other reason you shouldn't blow canned air at your fan blades and let them spin that Brad warned about is that you might reverse the electricity conduction. So normally the motor might use electricity to turn tiny magnets on/off to spin the fan but if you turn the motor off and spin the fan manually the magnets might build up current inside the motor's wires the other way. I'm not an electrical engineer so it's mostly internet heresay but you would probably need to spin the fan A LOT before it became a problem.
If I just want to play music from a random folder on PC like a ripped album I've found VLC player is perfectly fine and pretty flexible as well. My music listening habits have changed to usually a 10 track playlist once in a while compared to skipping tracks constantly when I was younger. The Musicolet app is excellent for listening to music files on Android and I use that a lot.
I for one am excited about this new podcast featuring Brad & Vinny building opposite halves of the cabinet while Alex reads them the PDFs they can't read and Jeff's quarter is Trackmania.
After Gen 7, I have no real hope most devs have any ability to utilize metrics to discern why people quit a game (its "too long" or "hate where the plot went" or "the combat got very slot A in tab B" don't get understood over a toxic developer-consumer relationship), but I do appreciate devs offering an out on that.
Having this new trend of have you choose one of those is almost worse.
@avioto: Hell yeah, a fellow Sliger SM580 owner! I built my 580 last summer when the case first came out and I love it so much. Not cheap but totally worth it.
@vinny at least for the games I have worked on any time a crash log has been sent in (whether you clicked Send Report on the Unreal crashlog or it was silently sent as soon as it crashed), they get put into a database, parsed and collated into like crashes.
If your crash is a one-off and there have been no other crashes with the same program callstack then it will likely never get looked at. But as soon as several with the same or similar callstack build up then the priority on looking into it and fixing it rises.
At my current job we have a web interface we can log into and look at any time to see the crashes, callstacks, where they're coming from and so on, even for in-development projects.
@avioto: Like I said, built it last summer when it first came out but I definitely splurged on it- 3700X, 2080 Ti, 16 GB RAM, 2 M.2 drives, plenty of RGB...
Definitely went with the chrome handle and the chrome feet too. My old case was a 10 year old Cooler Master Storm Scout which had the handle built into the top, which I always liked since it makes moving even a big midtower case so handy. Since I tend to travel with my PC a bit the handle was a must for the SM580. Whole thing fits nicely into my Pelican case for travel too, which is nice!
Yo I was just thinking that Galak-Z (brad's shirt) is KIND OF like solar jetman (playing on Jeff's TV) ... i was thinking that the other day and now im proud to see my weird side thought materialize in the hotspot!
@jeff You can still use iTunes when you have FLAC files to work with. I just use XLD ("X Lossless Decoder" - https://tmkk.undo.jp/xld/index_e.html) to convert them into Apple Lossless (no quality loss while able to work with iTunes without issue [even syncs if you have Apple Music and/or iTunes Match.])
I’m sure there’s a Windows equivalent option for converting from FLAC to Apple Lossless if you don’t want to use a Mac for the conversion process.
I seriously can't say enough that this might be favorite podcast you guys do. Keep this going for as long as you guys can. I enjoy the banter between you guys, its like the old days and I love the stories of the past that you guys tell. Keep it up boyos
