It makes no sense to me why Dan is so bothered by crowd chants. They pay just as much money as he does to attend and are completely allowed to chant whatever they want. I don't care if they are "derailing" chants, "offensive" chants, or whatever.

Takeover was great, and I liked 90% of Wrestlemania. Now that I'm all wrestled out, this would be the perfect place to take a season break, but alas...

How are you not seeing it? A bunch of people ruining the enjoyment for everyone else by completely hijacking the show and making it about themselves (the worlds lamest "we are awesome" chant for example). They make every promo drag longer than they should and often downright ruin them.

Charlotte tried to do a heartfelt shoot promo about women's wrestling during the title ceremony but the crowd just kept chanting for Bailey and thus what could have been an amazing speech was completely ruined. Fucking assholes.

Wrestlemania Weekend in a nutshell:

  • NXT put on one of the best shows you'll see this year. Maybe the best tag team match I've seen in a decently long time, great match between Asuka vs. Bayley despite the crowd not paying attention(they were cheering, but not playing along with the match), and one of the best matches we'll see this year with Nakamura's debut.
  • WrestleMania was below average to average on the "WrestleMania scale". None of the finishes made sense or mattered, so that takes away from the show, and WWE is just doing silly shit to see what they can get away with like having Ryder win the title and lose it the next night to The Miz. Women's title match was the best on the show, but even that isn't really a match you need to go out and see.
  • EVOLVE had a showcase match between Zack Sabre Jr. and Will Ospreay that should be a must watch. ZSJ is the best technical wrestler in the world right now and Ospreay is among the best high flyers in the world right now and their styles ended up matching perfectly for a great match.
  • Kota Ibushi wrestled a bird suit by himself for a 15 minute match on Kaiju Big Battel... I need to watch that one.

That's all I've got. NJPW is having a big show tomorrow, so if you're a wrestling fan and want to chat it up with other wrestling duders, head on over to The Wrestling Thread, where we talk about this (awesome) shit nonstop.

She drifted in and out of character which made it real awkward I thought, im not saying the fans shouldnt of chanted but I dont think her reaction helped how messy the promo seemed.

@ebinbraveheart: She won the title in a very heel fashion at Mania. You cannot have a heel Flair try to cut a face promo and expect a super smarky crowd to play along.

Other than the 'We are awesome' and the Punk and Benoit chants, I fuckin love chanting. (Im an English football fan so its second nature). It happens here at the indie shows at ICW and Progress and seems to go nuts when RAW is filmed across the water.

As long as it doesnt interupt the talent doing promos, I always assumed the people in the ring must like the chants (especially the weird ones we create over here that arent as huge in the US). Id love to hear a wrestlers perspective on it.

Yeah well that's true, but the chant didn't really have anything to do about that. They wouldn't have derailed someone like Kevin Owens, who's a really shitty heel, if he did a similar promo.

Edit: By shitty I mean that the character is a complete asshole, Kevin Owens is great obviously.

@ebinbraveheart: True, but Owens is one of maybe five people in the main roster that knows how to deal with a hostile crowd. The roster is not filled with Cena-level mic folks that can play with the ebb and flow of crowd reactions to make it more entertaining.

Lita should have done the first part of that ceremony, and Charlotte should have grabbed the mic and went full Flair in the second half.

Yeah, I agree with that 100 % actualy. It wouldn't surprise me though if they even derailed Lita's promo. That crowd had zero respect for anyone.

@drdarkstryfe: I saw people saying this then when I watched I noticed that Charolette was going for a very specific pay off. At one point she gets ready to say something very heel / selfish. It was your typical "we did this but really I'm still the best" kind of speech. The crowd just shook her and derailed so much it ruined the payoff.

I think some chants are super dumb (we are awesome) and some have zero (Benoit) place no matter what, however Dan exaggerates this shit to the nth level and constantly complains over nothing.

This is not how wrestling works. Charlotte is a heel and has been for a long time. You can't just turn it on and off whenever you want. If you want to have a heartfelt promo, do it with someone who's going to get cheered. It was a horrible idea by WWE to have her do that promo and it was terrible work by her for not knowing how to deal with the crowd at all.

Yeah, I already acknowledged that earlier. Still a completely needless chant and a generally asshole crowd. I'm not gonna make my whole point again here.

I have no issue with chants in general. I am fine with them booing something or showing that they find something boring, ect.

However, when the chants get Creepy or just feel like the crowd is desperate to make itself the center of attention in the show, and doing that just because of those things [which often happen] and not for any other real reason, that is where it gets obnoxious.

On another note,

As someone who hadn't watched Wrestling since Summer slam [not once] I overall enjoyed the show. Perhaps that is due to not seeing all the probably [just guessing] missed opportunities and tossed awesome story lines that they screwed up on leading to Wrestlemania. Without that, going in blind it perhaps helped a lot.

Some stuff I didn't enjoy as much, but most of it I actually enjoyed.

I seriously find Roman so boring though. That was the main downside of the night, even after 6 months I come back and Roman is still the same undeveloped personality that does 3 or 4 things [roars, superman punches, lifts people up when he is in a hold and slams them down, and spears]. Not to say I don't think he has potential talent. I totally can see a world where I would like him, but oh my gosh something has to happen with him seriously.... I mean he seems like a nice guy but to me he is just the most boring person to watch on the roster. I think if he goes down the path of a smug heel I would be very interested in his character though.

Him and the Battle Royal were oddly my least favorite.... honestly the only guy in that I cared about winning that lasted more than 10 seconds was Tatanka honestly. I don't even know who that guy is who won.

I very much can see myself feeling different if I had been watching even a decent deal of wrestling, without such a huge break though with that event.

Also while I enjoyed the show I didn't feel any need to keep watching wrestling after it. Pretty much during the Shane match [which I really enjoyed] I thought to myself, heck if Shane wins I want to tune in to Raw tomorrow and see what happens. He didn't, so I felt no particular need to given anything else on the rest of the show... Now as I listen to the podcast and find out he got the show, I wish I had seen it, but it makes glad I didn't bother now if they are just going to double back on that in such a way... If they were going to do that they should have had him win.

@ebinbraveheart: I think it was less disrespectful, and more that it was a weird segment where a heel was cutting a babyface promo and the fans just didn't buy it. I mean, they were chanting "womens wrestling" by the end. If they'd done the segment the way that other guy suggested, it would have been fine.

The WWE have always done this stuff, hot shot booking, stupid celebrity stuff, angles that go nowhere, burying people. It's that we used to like the characters and now we don't. It's still the same old carnival show it has always been. I see my self criticising the show then I realise I'm watching grown men pretend to fight over bootyo's and then I realise oh right, I'm watching wrestling.

@hassun: That's insane to me, because he has the best gimmick in the world right now. He and his gimmick are so completely intertwined and really make him who he is. I can't even imagine him doing anything else, and I am positive that anything the WWE would give him would be horrendous in comparison.

Anyway, I've been thinking lately that I would love WWE to do something like a G1 Climax tournament. Tournaments are super fun and are a great way to see what a wrestler can truly do in the ring. King of the Ring is cool, but...I guess I'd just like more matches than that, basically. Plus KotR is midcard as hell now.

@wrathofgod: Basically he's been turning into a WWE wrestler for a while now and not in a good way. The stuff happening in his matches are carbon copies of earlier stuff. I don't mind a signature move or sequence or two but a good match needs more than just that.

I don't need to see another match of Nakamura putt his boot to someone in the corner and doing his shiver thing and then also the other dude giving him a similar treatment. There needs to be more originality than that and I know Nakamura is perfectly capable of it.

@hassun: I can see that, I suppose. But then, as you said, that's WWE's whole in-ring style, so I don't see that changing any time soon.

It doesn't bother me, personally. I'm big on the pacing of a match more than anything else. I'd love a match with nothing but chops and atomic drops as long as it was paced well and reacted to the crowd well.

Maybe Nakamura can become the King of Atomic Drop Style next.

@hassun: I get your point, but I think that making a break from the things that made him popular in the first place, especially whilst he's still learning the language and acclimatising to the WWE style, would be a bad move for him.

I agree with what they say about anyone being able to lose in Lucha Underground is refreshing.

This has constantly bugged me about WWE. The matches are so predictable because there is such a mentality of x tier wrestlers can't lose to y tier wrestlers without looking bad. In reality, the best lose A LOT as well in all aspects of life. It doesn't mean they are bad. Sometimes they just lose. It always drove me crazy on that, the fear of having to protect people from match losses. Obviously if they lose all the time it is a different thing, but before most WWE matches are even started you know who is going to win walking out because there is never a belief they would let X guy lose to Y guy. One of the reasons I actually found the Ryder stuff neat, it actually was really cool thinking that anyone ACTUALLY could win a match...
