Props to the production value of this one, super good job on everything. As for the content of the show itself, not what I subscribe for.

Was my favorite superhero movie for a hot minute. Also when I dress green with some purple, girlfriend STILL remembers, "Oh, you're going as a villain" because of the primary colors in comics back in the day.

So the concept of this show is to explain internet stuff to Bakalar. I feel like Tamoor and Lucy need to explain ahegao to Bakalar now....

Don't worry Jeff, I have also spent too much time on the beach and have never heard of this meme. Great first episode! Very informative, entertaining, and well made.

"Old" was my first post-quarantine movie theatre experience and uh... not a great film, but fun if you understand that it's just a relatively high budget B-movie. (The scene where the lady goes all Sadako on a couple of teens because she's old is easily one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.)

On the M. Night Shyamalan paradox: I think his movies, alongside Christopher Nolan's oeuvre and "Lost", basically poisoned the well of pop culture criticism into something that treats every piece of art as a puzzle box that needs to be "decoded" with a single, all-encompassing explanation, rather than as subjective experiences which can have different meanings for every viewer. Just something I find aggravating about popular movie discourse.

I hope future episodes are more about obscure stuff online that can be fun and less explaining a specific new meme.

EDIT : I did enjoy hearing Lucy , Tamoor and Jeff's opinions, their jokes and banter.

Only thing to note: unless my window isn't sized correctly, Lucy's Twitter handle at the end was cut off on the bottom of the screen.

I kind of hate the idea of explaining the origin of a meme, but I LOVE the deep dive into the foundations of the meme. The explanation quickly turning into a discussion on "What the fuck happened to M Night Shyamalan?" was when I started actually paying attention. Hopefully this is how the show is framed going forward. Get the meme stuff out of the way quickly and skip to the meat and potatoes of the discussion. Nicely done.

Honestly, now I just want a break down from Tamoor and Lucy about why Spongebob Squarepants has and still is a meme juggernaut. That show just keeps gifting us memes, and it's baffling. I've thought about this quite a bit, but I need this to be a show topic sometime.

I liked this. I think I liked it more for the M. Night discussions, so if this series is them bringing up a meme and then going on an interesting forty minute tangent then I’m down.

A) This should be fun. I look forward to these getting way weirder as it goes and Jeff loosing his mind.

B) Having just listened to the Blank Check ep about this movie where they mostly liked it, I'm kind of fascinated why certain things get strung up for ridicule like this has. It's like a popular kid giving you a mean nickname the first day of school and then you're screwed forever.

I'm gonna bundle up "why certain things get strung up for ridicule" into more "why this became a meme." It's not so much that everyone thinks that the movie is bad; the quality of the movie is almost entirely besides the point. The one-line premise of the movie (based on what is shown in the advertising) is just low-hanging fruit, meme fuel.

Memes do well (by which I mean they get traction and propagate, they get shared around, they get mutated and remixed) if they're useful to the people that are online using them. Maybe the meme encapsulates a certain commonly understood feeling or situation (#relatable), maybe the meme is just broadly funny, maybe the meme is a gif taken from popular media that is broadly familiar with a lot of people which is more like a booster modifier for the previous reasons.

Some amount of memes are heavily driven by corporate marketing, because if a media conglomerate spends enough money plastering ads for something all over the internet, it suddenly satisfies the criteria of "something from popular media that is broadly familiar to a lot of people." You can make one halfway funny joke about a dumb trailer, but if you and everyone else are seeing that trailer 4 times a day on Youtube/Twitch, your halfway funny joke gets shared around and refined because everyone "gets it" and is just as tired of it as you.

So I don't know what your internet experience is, but I have seen Old trailers nonstop here and there online the past 2-3 weeks, more than any other film. This is probably a big driving factor into why the internet is more than ready to clown on it (and the rocky history of Shyamalan's movies). No one is necessarily going to see it, or read reviews, but as a quick elevator pitch the movie sounds kinda dumb and is easy to clown on.

Other example: gamer awareness and meming on Youtube/Twitch about the song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" took off dramatically around 2018. Did gamers suddenly develop a deep appreciation of John Denver? Absolutely not, it's just that this godforsaken Fallout 76 trailer with that song was being played ad nauseam on Twitch/gaming Youtube, and it was stuck in everybody's head for a month, and the result was memes.

I really liked this! great idea for a show, and I think this crew is perfect for it too.

Tamoor did a good job leading us down the logical path to the conclusions he made about M Night. I love this type of stuff where I come away thinking about something I've never really considered before

I'm sure as you all get more comfortable with the format the conversation may flow more smoothly. It seemed Tam wanted to stick to his script, so at times things were a little slow.

I'm looking forward to more similar analysis - the internet is full of more material for these types of deep dives

Not bad, I liked it. I will see if this gets even better over time. That Shyamalan video was deep, like he was going to expose some type of illuminate secret and was stopped at the last minute.

I'm fairly convinced that The Happening (and probably this movie as well) are intentional executions of classic Hollywood B movies. And honestly? I think it works.
