This is not what Asteroids would be now.

Battlezone! I had completely forgot about that game. I loved it back when I was in Jr. High. Thanks for reminding me it existed. I think I still have the CD for it lying around here somewhere, I should find it.

The first game is freely available and has been patched up to work on modern systems by fans and one of the original developers. There's even a Steam group hosting weekly multiplayer events for it. It's available on http://battlezone1.com/

Battlezone II was supported with patches by Pandemic for as long as that studio remained alive (EA killed them off in 2009 though), so it too should run fairly well on modern systems.

More like ASSteroids, amirite?

But really... It's fine they exist, but I personally can't stand these procedurally generated survival games, because "emergent gameplay" relies so heavily on things coming together and something might happen.

As an adult person with a modicum of responsibilities, that sort of game is simply not something I have time for.

It is a young persons sort of game.

In a weird way, I'm getting more of a Missile Command vibe from this. Especially the part with the turret.

You would think that with a major studio (is atari still a major studio?) they would wait to release the game until it was at least a little fun instead of trying to have people pay for an early access version. As they said in the video, the loop of gather resources -> build things -> gather more resources etc. works well in minecraft because the things you build can be almost anything but in this game there's like 6 prefab base pieces and after you've built all of them what do you have to do?

I really don't understand why this is being sold as a game at this stage in development at all.

Apparently the servers were shut down shortly after this video, making the game unplayable. It's still somehow for sale on Steam though.

this game officially no longer exists, unless you already own it.
