Never got into SOCOM back in the day. This sure does look like an Early Access game.

Needs more Drew!

Edit: left hand on a controller, right hand on a mouse is a vastly underrated control system. I played some of GTAV that way, means you get analogue movement *and* aiming!

Played socom since day 1 probably the biggest socom fan ever, that game destroyed my life. still play with the same people from my socom 1 clan.

C A P 1 Server - US East 4 clan PoA, METAL, RIP,

not a lot of people because its on god dam pc the game needs to be on PS4 this is not a pc game if this game is not shown by sony at e3 screw it.

I would be happy with a Socom 1 or 2 HD Remake just take out all the glitches that is all any real socom fan has been asking for since ps3.

here is the Method Man Socom song "so calm"

It appears that the only thing that is unfinished.... is this quicklook. YEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!

I'm just kidding, I love the countdown thing. I love that someone put effort into that thing despite it not really being seen by anyone except the GB crew.

Socom came before Halo 2 and tbh it was much better and oddly forgotten.

I don't understand why Halo 2 was much loved, it was a relic when it came out, I mean look at how advanced the PC was.... even Socom was ahead of Halo with server browsers and dedicated servers people could buy and customize. Just look at the release date of Halo 2 and how it came out after Half-Life 2, a game that looks a whole generation ahead.. Counter Strike Source came out with Half-Life 2, way ahead of what Halo 2 was doing. You had Battlefield 1942, RTCW, Joint Operations, Planetside etc etc.

Why did Halo 2 get so much attention? It led to the worst possible outcome of P2P and lobbies... they suck.

+ Why has everyone forgotten about America's Army? Probably the most unique online FPS of them all and it was the first to do real progression. It's still the only one that has put deep meaning to progression, you had to do a 30 min medical test to be able to heal people. You didn't always revive them, but you stopped them from dying and gain points. It played like a more hardcore Socom, it's much loved and sadly the US Army (or whatever) decided to can it and go for COD with the latest America's Army )proving grounds) which sucks.

Look at America's Army, it was way ahead of COD4 which people give all the credit to for online progression. Look at Joint Operations, a game that was far better than Battlefield 2... what ever happened to Novalogic?

Socom & Socom 2 were my first online games I've ever sunk hundreds of hours into. I'm so happy that this game is being made.

@infinityinc: It's been tried a few times but it's definitely a concept with more potential.

@venekor: You could say similar things about Halo 1. For people playing FPS games on PC that game looked horribly dated. Same thing for GoldenEye before it. Consoles are just more accessible and those games did console first person shooting better than other console games.

As for NovaLogic, Inc., considering their most recent game was released in 2009 I'm not sure there's much hope left on that front.

@hassun: Halo was an amazing game for the first 2/3, as soon as the Flood came in it fell apart dramatically and turned to crap. I don't know many people who completed it as a result of the Flood and so I cannot say it's one of the best games. However it is an important game and those first 2/3rds were great even for the PC, the A.I to this day is still some of the best.

Now this is just me.. but none of this look especially fun, and I used to play Counter Strike a ton in 99-00's so I'm used to doing nothing in between rounds.

EDIT: I guess one of my biggest complaints about these Kickstarter projects is that they usually aim to recreate old games and don't really innovate. It's cool that they are remaking Socom but.. then what? Is getting the same exact game from early 2000's enough for some people? That new Carmageddon is cool and I loved that game when I was growing up but I don't want to just play the same game with nicer graphics. Where are the destructible environments, the crazy online features? Where are all the things that developers couldn't really do back then in these modern games?

Boy, it'd be real cool if they were still working on that title too because its like they went out of their way to choose the worst, most not-catchy name possible.

That said, never did play SOCOM, but I always wanted to. Hopefully this turns out to be great because...ya know...that'd be nice.

Jeff mentions he's not sure if there's an audience for this kind of game. I think Early Access, KickStarter and digital distribution generally have proven there is an audience for almost any kind of product/garbage people might wish to place up for sale, but maybe that's just me being cynical. Something something long tail effect.

One of my cousins was super into the PS2 SOCOM games and it was pretty awesome watching him play. My online PS2 game of choice was Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Man that game was SO FUCKING FUN.

Seeing this makes me wish there was one big, popular slow-paced shooter everyone was into. Takes me back to the massive games of GRAW 2 early in the 360 lifecycle.

The Last of Us is good at the slow and deliberate pace, but it's still nothing like these games. The MP there kind of gives me hope that a big budget version of this might catch on a bit but who am I kidding?

This seems like a weird thing, they're making a game that's ignoring a bunch of standards that have been established since the original game that are just direct improvements.

This game is so barebones that it may as well just be a bunch of premade unity assets slapped together. I get that it's super early, but the ways this is like SOCOM just feel kind of outdated. I can't imagine there is a real desire for this stuff in the community, because isn't the modern logical progression of SOCOM just ArmA III? Of course it has plenty of time for improvement, but I dunno... I feel like this game is hamstrung by how much it just wants to be SOCOM.

@redking56: I had no problem with it either, the problems came when you hadn't logged on for like a year and they decided to delete your account. You had to contact them and go through some weird process to get back online.... I never was able to and so my time with the PS2 online came to an end.

I played a lot of SOCOM and really enjoyed it, but I don't know that I want to play such a camp heavy game. It looks like people are either going to close all the doors in a room and go prone in a corner or hide in a bush with a sniper. No, thank you.

SOCOM was pretty cool and the voice commands was fun to mess around with even though it never worked well enough, having your dudes throw grenades when you tell them to stand down in a stealth mission was not ideal. ;p

Yeah, I kinda wish there were controllers specifically designed for that available, the 360 gamepad isn't comfortable to hold with one hand, but the analog movement feels great.

It'd be the Chris with a white car that wasn't the actual Chris with the white car in that story. The one that didn't shoplift from Walmart.

Although Triumph (Killa Bees) is a great video, nothing beats Gravel Pit. Wu Tang Cavemen. ODB being in jail in the video because he was actually in jail at the time of filming is always funny. Also Frank Stoney for life.

This game looks amazing!!!!

I remember when i first got a ps3 and modern warfare came out and I was playing it thinking what the f is this first person respawn trash? I want a real shooter. I cant wait for this to come out on PS4.

I had my doubts after reading steam early access forum chatter but after seeing this I think this game is coming along quite nicely.

Not at all. Arma is for crazy people. Socom is an actual game. I think of socom as kind of a sports game. Each round your team is running a play like football or something. Thats what you do while you're dead discuss a strategy with your team for the next round.

I skipped days of school when my clan had matches on SOCOM. I wonder how many of the funders are ex SOCOM players and how many are just wanting a deliberate tactical team game.

SOCOM... It sure is a while since I've heard that mentioned.

It's weird thinking about the game series came and went. Remember Onimusha? You almost never hear anybody talk about Onimusha and that series had a bunch of games.

"We're looking for guys wearing hats, they're the bad guys."

Oh, I see this game is pretty realistic.

I like the idea of a relatively slow paced multiplayer shooter where it's viable to try to hide and sneak. Don't now if this is it though.

This looks like it plays like a PS2 game.... which for the standard of FPS and TPS games, is uh, not usually good at all. I understand wanting a throwback, and even the slow/careful pace is fine, but including mechanics like having Grenades be a separate weapon slot that you have to swap to is just bad design that died for a very good reason.

Well, at least it is more like SOCOM than #4 was.

What killed SOCOM was trying to chase CoD and Battlefield style game play. SOCOM was about not re-spawning, small maps, and clear time limited objectives. That was the niche and when you do your niche well people play, try to be something else and you lose to the better game. SOCOM needed to stick to SOCOM and not worry about if CoD was bigger. Zipper could have survived with 1 million fans buying it and playing the hell out of it

When the SOCOM games were hot, they did things nobody else did on consoles
- Small team tactical objective based play
- Foliage you could hide in
- Weapons that acted differently, with realistic sampling of sound effects like echo when in a room.
- Vertical play via ladders and not just jump pads or cheats
- Ability to chat, and give a 'GG' to the other team.
- A room created by a given SOCOM II user, could have factors such password protection, number of rounds, round type, round time, weapon restrictions, and friendly fire could all be adjusted. If you wanted a no rocket launcher map you could have that and like-minded people WOULD play it with you.

The sad fact is that H-Hour is unlikely to stick with the concept of SOCOM. It will have re-spawn game play....and that it will ruin the community and it will be all over. SOF Studios needs to refine, hone, and perfect single life/no re-spawn game play and maps. If they don't do that if they try to be a little bit of everything that will fail.

A "cure-all" cures nothing, it is snake-oil. The temptation to make this game playable and enjoyable by CoD, Halo, BF or Killzone fans will be great. SOF has to resist that impulse to the middle of the road even if some people won't play it. This game just needs it solid niche of dedicated player and it will do fine and grow.
