@mdnthrvst: Since you seem to be quite the roguelike expert, could you give me a list of some of the best roguelikes you have come across?

Anything not DF or nethack preferably. I've looked into those a lot.

I've tried some Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and enjoyed it.

Also what do you think of Dungeons of Dredmor?

I wish they had not brought up the argument of rogue-like. You get the purists stomping on their own penises every time.

Or they could have just not brought up the word (which is never spelled with a hyphen, by the way) because it's not accurate. It's not accurate because this game is a dual-joystick shooter in the vein of Geometry Wars, and any dual-joystick shooter, even one with random levels, is, necessarily, not a roguelike.

'Roguelike' is its own genre, not a dressing you drizzle onto your video game salad that stands for 'randomness and permadeath.' FTL is a spaceship-combat game that takes influence from roguelikes. Influence is not the same thing as identity. I believe Rogue Legacy coined the term 'roguelites' for its own thing. Edmund McMillen freely admits Isaac isn't a roguelike. Even if Brad doesn't consider any of this, which of course he won't, that doesn't mean I'm going to roll over and let a thirty-year old genre term be co-opted by oblivious game journalists for a three-year old fad in commercial indie games.

As someone who's played pretty much every roguelike that's come out in the last two decades, I know what I'm talking about and care about it too. Of COURSE I'm perfectly okay with bringing it up every single time it gets misued, though penis-stomping is a pretty good slight.

Boo hoo.

So this is like Binding of Isaac + Hotline Miami (controls) + Diablo?

I'm in. All the way.

... when the final version is released. I don't do pay-to-be-a-beta-tester.

---edit. Oh Brad. Choose new character, express confusion about what the special ability is. Finds out when Vinny asks him to actually press the special ability button. >.<

Kind of sad to see whoever runs the GB youtube page lambasting someone for being knowledgeable. You'd think knowing your stuff would be considered a boon on, you know, a website that is ostensibly a wiki.

Game looks WICKED though. I'll grab it when it's out for real for sure.

Now I want to make the game "Rogue-like-like", a game where you roam randomly-generated dungeons as the like-like monster from Zelda.

It's interesting to see roguelike fans suggest the term is incorrectly applied here, and then go on to say dual-joystick shooter is a better term. I would argue that the latter is more of a misnomer, as the amount of fast precision required means anyone playing this is probably doing it with a mouse and keyboard.

At least roguelike helps convey some of the elements that are a part of the game. I wonder if people started saying something like "This game has roguelike elements" would roguelike fans stop getting so upset?

I know if I were a fan of a long time niche genre that is starting to influence new games' mechanics, I would be happy at the prospect of new possibilities. Instead most of these fans seem to focus on getting angry over semantics.

The only thing worse than people who call literally every game (seriously people call dark souls a roguelike) a roguelike are people who argue that it is okay to be wrong about something and be proud of it. In fact unless you are wrong you are a nerd/loser/geek/virgin.

Its one of the major problems of the modern world. Being proud of being wrong. They think being dumb is a badge of honor.

I'm going to start calling Mario an RTS and yell at people who call me out on it.

In before calm down.

Okay as far as the game goes it looks pretty fun. Similar to Binding of Isaac where you can jump in for a couple of rounds real quick. $13 is too much for this game if you ask me, though, since it is pretty simple.

Also Brad is pretty good at dodging those big bullets go Brad!

Subscriber elitism. What a friendly and inclusive community you have here. I'm not the one cursing, getting frustrated, or throwing around personal insults because someone disagrees with me. I'm just making my point. Honestly I think you're being quite reasonable, when you aren't dismissing me out of hand for not paying the website or whatever other silliness you can think up.

not only are subscribers the elite, but we are the enlightened ones. The secret rulers of all of society. All subscribers get a free 1 year membership to the freemasons, with a discounted offer once that expires. It's a lot like amazon prime for students. Same type deal.

I remember Patrick showing Wasteland Kings on Unprofessional Friday and I liked the look of it. I had no idea they were making it into a full game but I'm glad they did!

Vlambeer made Super Crate Box as well which is pretty fun. I can see that they've made the screen shake when certain weapons fire again. As Brad said it really does add to the intensity, I quite like it.
