Noice. For the record, that Blood covenant map is re-imagined campgrounds dm6 from Quake 3. Might even be closer to dm6 pro which popped up late in the Q3A life.

I really enjoyed this game, they really captured that Quake movement so it felt super familiar.

Looks alright I guess. To be honest though if I wanted some Quake action I would just play Quake 3. I don't need nor want any class differences or loot boxes.

They seem pretty down on the game in general. I'm pretty bummed because as a big fan of Quake I want it to be successful.

Still, early days though so things could change.

Btw Anarki's passive doesn't give him extra speed, it just allows him to turn in the air. His active heals him (boosts his speed slightly whilst using it so he can get away as he can't shoot when using it).

Don't believe them and try it for yourself. It's wonderfully fast and a good mix between Quake World and Quake 3 Arena of old. It's a really good Quake game.

They can't take Quake Live offline because they already did that years ago. They took the master servers offline and gave the community the tools to host their own servers.

They basically said it's no better than the other arena shooters out there but has the Quake name on it to so it might have a player base. They also didn't seem to like anything new they added.

It was hardly glowing praise. I came away thinking their impression was that it was ok but they were slightly disappointed by it.

Gameplay seems fun and I don't mind these "hero" characters in the game, but FUCK that microtransaction bullshit, especially if this is gonna be a full price release, and even more so if they keep this 3 currency horse crap.

This made me think about the new Unreal Tournament. Is that worth revisiting now? There was nothing bad about (flak canon still felt great), but it was pretty unfinished at the stage when I played it.

I definitely agree on the bland/uninteresting look of the weapons. (Although Quake has never been all that impressive in that regard. UT is usually better with that stuff.)

The fact that they are not recognizable enough is a bigger problem though. And that the sounds are not as impressive. Especially the super nailgun.

I'm still infinitely disappointed in Bethesda/iD for this. First they put out Wolfenstein: The New Order, and it was fucking amazing. Then they came out with DOOM2016, and blew my goddamned balls off.

But Quake? Quake they just poop out an Arena DM game, instead of re-imagining the Lovecraftian future medieval space nightmare campaign that the original was. I want THAT. SO BADLY.

I agree that there's a super interesting game to be found in a re-imagined singleplayer, but unfortunately that's not what Quake fans want. They want a literal remake of Q3A but also make it better and introduce modern quality-of-life improvements but also leave everything exactly the same as I remember, and it has to have 2 million players online at all times or else it's a dead game and not worth playing.

Arena shooter fans are impossible to please and it bums me out that newer, more interesting takes on the genre are always tossed aside for lame nitpicky reasons.

I can't tell if Jeff's complaints are an actual critique of the game or it just being a case of "it's not Quake 3 Arena".

As someone who put some time into Q3 myself, I'm looking forward to playing this. It's fucking fast, so they at least got that right. Also the hit sound.

Yeah, that all is what Quake Live is for. It's fantastic. DOOM fans also wanted the DOOM2016 DM to not suck if we're going to go with making what the fans wanted. If what I'm seeing of Champions was the DM component of a larger game that also included a Q1-style campaign handled as well as DOOM's, that would pretty much be instant GOTY.

As someone who doesn't have nostalgia for Quake 3 but fell in love with Quake Live a few years ago, i think the gameplay is fantastic.

@sakr: I believe you can pay a one time fee to unlock all the characters.

I mean hey, it's a free to play game. They want you to buy stuff. If you wanna play for free you can stick with Ranger and rent other characters for free.

I don't see any reason to play this over QuakeLive to sate my strafe- and rocket-jumping needs. Which reminds me...why wasn't Brad doing strafe jumps? Is there no strafe-jumping in Quake Champions or has Brad been a fake Quake fan all along and doesn't know how to strafe-jump!?! Strafegate.

It's been a while since I launched QuakeLive. Railgun one-hit-kill modes were always my jam, but I think they were behind the paywall in QLive, at least for a while - should check it out and see if I can do some rails today.

They both sound totally uninterested in Unreal Tournament, despite it pretty much being exactly what they want. Mods, Mutators, user-created maps and skins and stuff, as well as the weapon priorities.
