@yummytreesap: She's an engineer on the site. I'm pretty sure she designed the video player. She has been on UPF a couple of times before.

everyone has the crew members they like and dislike - and I think civil comments about it are fine dont you think?

I like that Alexis will mention Ryan. No one else does and I can understand that it's like, to not bum people out, but I like little things like "Oh man, if Ryan was here he'd be freaking out right now."

@ripelivejam: I like Brad, but I think we can all agree that Brad is almost always lazy and uninvolved in UPF and it drags down the show. Like think about how many UPFs have Brad do his segment and then just sit back on the computer browsing Neogaf or something and saying almost nothing for half the show? It actually sucks he never seems to care more for me since I like him.

Brad's Medieval Engineers segment was like if Drew picked up DCS for the first time (and wasn't interested in simulators or aircraft), did 0 research, skipped tutorials, and then screwed around for a while and failed to show off the actual game. Even 20 minutes of preparation would've made it a great time.

Pretty sure those were bots Jeff, they have odd movement.

Movies suck. They're long, and you sit there and don't do anything. All for a thing that didn't happen. I remember when I was a kid, and I saw that Braveheart was three VHS tapes long. Whoa. No thanks.

I also have never seen it, and probably could never build up the will to.

The NES version of Metal Gear? COME ON, DAN, GET WITH IT

Seriously though, the MSX version is light years beyond the NES one. It didn't have the "Lost Woods" bits, for one(except for a desert thing later on). It actually opens the exact same as MGS, except sans submarine. Also, it's the canon one. Also, it's the one you actually freakin' fight Metal Gear in. You should try them, @danryckert. Metal Gear 2 is especially impressive for its time, just as MGS is.

The MSX MG games don't hold up particularly well but they're at least novel for being the original stealth games. The stealth in the NES version is kinda broken so all you're left with is a pretty bad action game. I've no idea why Jeff has a preference for it but at least he's consistent about favoring the worst games in the series.

Also Dan you don't fistfight Big Boss in a minefield you run around a room neutralizing pools of acid with the chocolate in your rations so you can collect hairspray and a lighter and burn him to death.

@kasaioni: I thought it was the first portion that was just different. I didn't know it was a majority of the game. Wow. That sucks. I don't even know why you'd play the NES version nowadays then. Especially since the MSX games are in the HD Collection.

man that mgs shirt. kinda bumming me out that they went with the one where the faces are not aligned. that design was way better since it looks so much more correctly imo but im still gonna buy it

@tuesdoaythe5th: who says he doesn't? Who says anyone else there does? Pretty sure jeff's picks in particular are entirely off the cuff and last minute. Drew's are often some weird military thing that he probably picked last minute and are quite dull but i don't grudge him endlessly for it.

No one remembers that he was the one who picked that rad dodgeball game recently that everyone was hyped up on.

@drewbert@danryckert Hi guys, thought you might be interested: it seems that, like Drew mentioned, the idea behind the digital camo was to use modern science and computing to design a more effective camouflage than was previously possible. However, the new pattern has ended up performing poorly enough that it is already being phased out in favor of this pattern, which is much more similar to traditional camouflage.

Brad should just stop his half-assed contributions to UPF. Gosh, I wonder if I can fly? I guess I'll open the controls menu and then glance at it for two seconds before closing it.

I was impressed by how much Jeff remembered about Metal Gear, even if the NES version is hot garbage.

@FreddieFiasco ... Like what? Apart from the bombcast and UPF, he's not even seen that much anymore. Most QLs are Jeff/Dan/Drew now. I often wonder exactly why he's absent so much. I worry that his health issues (not to mention the ultimate sickness: Dota addiction) are more severe than we know.

@alejansolo: Exactly. I'd say maybe 50% of NES MG is that same as MSX MG at best.

I think a big difference is that when Jeff picks a stupid ass game he puts in the effort to at least make the segment entertaining. Brad occasionally does that (i.e. dodgeball game) but a lot of the time it is like this one... he put in no effort to even show off what the game could do to at least engage with the maps he picked (like opening the menu repeatedly and not even bothering to scan it for where it says X to enable flying...). Jeff and co. contributed more without even touching the controls (noticing controls to find the balls for example, telling him how to tether the trebuchet together).

I love Brad, and I completely disagree with any anti-Brad sentiment on this site. The difference in UPF is that they all put in an effort, whereas I often wonder if Brad just picks something shitty, slams it out, then is playing Dota or something in the back the entire time. He was even kinda bummed that Jeff wanted the computer to do the segment, making me wonder if he was actually playing Dota.

Finally play DKR and they don't show off Adventure mode, bosses, or any multiplayer battle arenas? Weak.

That NES port of Metal Gear doesn't look as drastically different from the MSX version as I expected, considering how much people talk about it.
