Jeff ended up buying that $400 router, jeez.

Also, get a Synology. They're better than Drobos.

More people in the room gave a shit about Rorie's microphone issue than Jeff's tragic cat story. Bunch of savages.

How did they spell quarterly wrong in math blaster it is part of their subscription service and it says Quaterly

How in 2017 and the Internet can something like this happen in a subscription based game no less

To mention an idea that briefly floated around during Math Blaster, an educational game stream could be some choice content. That flavor of feature is when I love this site the most.

Would be cool to see a livestream where you play random games from your inbox that you would never cover on their own. Superbunnyhop does something similar and there's always a hidden gem in there.

Poor Math blaster franchise...

Edit:

After some research it turns out I've only played the search for robot spot but there are a ton more of em. MB:TsfrS was pre installed on our packard bell home computer in like 1999/2000. That game was already pretty old at that point though its weirdly difficult to find out how old it is precisely haha. Release dates I've found online range from 1993 to 1995. I really liked it back then but maybe that was just because it was one of the only games I owned that I could finish/progress in as a 10 year old kid :')

EDIT2: aha the DOS and megadrive versions of the search for robot spot are from 1993 and 1994 respectively and the one I played was the 1995 windows rerelease. Shit got rereleased and remastered an insane amount lol. Must've been pretty popular.

PS: An educational stream would be awesome :D Would definitely vote for that.

People always seemed to be so perplexed by me walking around in WoW. It was like they either thought that I didn't know how to run or that it was some kind of odd voodoo magic. I kinda always assumed they were the type of folks who could never stay in one spot and kept tapping their space bar to jump around 24/7.

If anyone's interested in ICEY, if you jump and dash over the first arrow that tells you to go down, the game is completely different, opens up a bunch of options to not do what the narrator tells you to do, its pretty fun.

Think it looked pretty bad as well, not only because of the narrator but the gameplay seems pretty dull and floaty.

It still boggles my tiny mind that he made those first albums using Sound Forge.

If you own a cat that can get outside, or even decide to feed or shelter a cat (making it your responsibility), and you don't get that cat fixed -- YOU ARE A SHIT PET OWNER.

I don't care if you dress your cat up if funny clothes, or if you think dogs are cute and you have a t-shirt that says so. If you cant be bothered to spay or neuter - you shouldn't have a pet (cat).

Homeless cats are such an ecological problem, and feeding them without fixing them just means you are making future generations of strays. -- Rorie if your cat knocked up that other cat and its a stray -- you are the kitty daddy now!!!! Bob Barker will find you.

**And then I hit play on my video and Rorie mentions Price is Right, right after I put up Bob Barker. WEIRD.

Also, get a Synology. They're better than Drobos

Second that. It was pricey to set up, but 9TB in RAID5 (4x3TB HDDs) with nightly backups to a USB3 8TB drive[1] that just sits in the corner and does its thing (and autodownloads podcasts, MEGA/Google/Dropbox drives, and doubles as a dev. web server) is well worth it.

[1] Side-note: don't buy the Seagate Backup Plus 8TB drive for this sort of use - its cheap, but its write speeds are _insanely_ slow. Peaks at 15MB/s, and dips to 0B/s when hit with too many concurrent writes; equivalent WD drive sustained 45MB/s+ for the duration (it backed up >>100GB in the time it took the Seagate to get to 11GB).

What model do you have? I'm sitting here scrolling through Synologys on Newegg, but there are... a lot. Sounds like yours is more heavy duty than what I need, but I'm happy for any advice. I'm not looking for any major redundancy, just a network-accessible volume for media and roms and so forth so I don't need to leave my PC on all the time.

@brad: For low-stress/consumer use cases, the Synology DS line is pretty good:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822108214

Two bays if you want hassle-proof redundancy (it'll pretty seamlessly just build your datastore in RAID 1), one if you're okay with potentially losing data (but at that point you might just get a 5TB external or something and plug it into your router, assuming your router can do a network share.

You don't really need to mess around with CPU (Celeron or STM are fine) or RAM settings unless you'd want to overload it as a bit of a home server.

I'm not looking for any major redundancy, just a network-accessible volume for media and roms and so forth so I don't need to leave my PC on all the time.

I've got the DS415play, which is now a couple of years old (still working fine and getting updates, just not a current model).

The way I found the right model for me was to look at Synology's current list of products to avoid buying older stock (newer ones are faster/lower power consumption for obvious reasons, and haven't been stuck in a warehouse forever), and then choose the number of HDD bays I needed. That gives a fairly small number of models you can then compare prices/misc. features on. I don't really use any of the model-specific addition features (video transcoding etc.)so never really looked at them.

The number of bays depends on a) how much you need to store, and b) how much redundancy you want. I went for 4 as:

  • I needed ~6TB of total storage, and drives larger than 3TB were expensive at the time
  • I wanted RAID5, so that one drive could be lost without data loss. I don't have remote backups (something I'm planning to rectify soon), so loosing a drive otherwise would only leave me with one copy of my data (which isn't great), and it's also more convenient -- if a drive fails, I can still continue to use my data whilst waiting for new hardware and the recovery process to complete.

I'd guess you'd probably want to look at either a 2-bay or 4-bay model (there are also 1-bay versions, but that is too limiting in terms of expansion IMO). Even if your backups are solid, I still think having redundancy is worthwhile -- in case of failure, you just need to swap out the drive and let it rebuild rather than going through an entire recovery process. That gives a couple of options:

  • 2 drives, mirrored -> Total storage is limited to the capacity of one drive, but either drive can fail without loosing any data. You can do this on either a 2-bay or 4-bay Synology.
  • 3 or 4 drives with RAID5 -> Total storage is limited to (capacity of single drive) * (number of drives - 1) (e.g. 4 3TB drives gives me 9TB of usable space), and data is written such any one drive can fail without data loss.

You can also do other stuff, like RAID6 or RAID5+hot spare, but that's probably overkill :p

It isn't necessary though - if you don't want that redundancy it isn't forced on you (e.g. you could put two 3TB drives in a 2-bay model and get 6TB of usable space).

In terms of drives, I've had good experiences with the Western Digital Red series. You can get up to 10TB storage on a single drive, and are designed for NAS use so have better reliability in these use-cases (longer average life, vibration protection [useful when many drives are close together], and designed to behave nicely with RAID arrays). They are also quick enough (my four drive array will saturate a gigabit network), and fairly quiet (my NAS is about 2 feet from my head and it's not really noticeable). They are a little more expensive than standard drives IIRC though (about 10% more expensive than the WD Green series).

(Short version: go here, and look at the Value Series models. Probably sufficient for your needs by the sounds of it)

Hope that helps at all, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.
