Totally recommend Daredevil: the Directors Cut. It's the only director's cut in history that actually turns a bad movie into a pretty good one.

Definitely enjoyed Only God Forgives in the theater, though I understand how divisive it is. It's pure aesthetics, if you come to movies for stories you will hate it. But the photography and music is masterful. I hope those teen girls checked out the "new Ryan Gosling movie," were traumatized for life, and turned into film students.

I think you could make a pretty good movie out of The Flash if you used lots of slow motion to convey things from his perspective, and also toned down his powers drastically.

But that doesn't change the fact that, between Batman's seriousness and Superman/Green Lantern's terribleness, DC's whole crossover universe effort seems totally fucked.

So... yeah.

...

"Box Office Bomb" must be the name of this podcast, by the way.

This. They're introducing Ultron, but beyond that it has zero ties to the recent Age of Ultron comic event.

Wait..... Did Rorie say "nobody Liked X-men First Class"??

no, I must've misheard him.

First Class has some redeemable qualities, but yes, for the most part it is pretty much shit.

@rorie said "No one really liked X-men First Class Origins Wolverine Part 1," so I'm assuming he is referring to just "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." That is a totally different movie from "X-Men: First Class," which was actually very well received, and given the context of the conversation, I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Origins movie.

I'm not a believer that a Rotten Tomatoes score defines if a movie is good or not, but just for the sake of it, just compare the two scores:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine = 38%

X-Men: First Class = 88%

I'm only 20 minutes in right now, but I sort of agree with the Batman+Superman movie feeling too early.

I think, looking at it from a marketing perspective, the movie makes a lot of sense. They want to milk the fervor for the Batman movies as much as they possibly can. If the new Superman came out two years from now, we could assume another two or three years would be needed to do the combo then. Will Batman be as popular 5 years from now? I don't know, but they could have made another Batman movie as well. OR, they could save the money from making two movies, and just make it one.

Makes sense, but as a fan of superhero movies, I would have preferred one more stand-alone Superman movie before a combination. DC wants to set up a JLA movie, and they need to show that these movies are in the same universe. And every year they don't make JLA movies (as in the tent pole films, the movie itself) is another year they don't get a piece of that huge superhero pie. They're kind of desperate, in my eyes, and they don't seem to know how to set all this up well.

I quite enjoyed Only God Forgives myself. I think a lot of people went in with the wrong expectations, thinking they were going to see Drive 2 or something.

Lt. Chang is the Thai Anton Chigurh.

@rorie @alex

Avengers 2 Age of Ultron will not be related to the comics event. It will also be quite different from the comics. Hank Pym will NOT be in Avengers 2. And the Ant-Man film will be about Scott Lang, not Hank Pym.

Really? Thank god. The shit that it would stir up giving Pym a movie, it's probably for the best that they go with Lang. Hard to empathize with a wife beater.

I pretty much hated every part of the Wolverine movie, except the incredibly pretty japanese girl.

No, good villains. The lady villain didn't even had an agenda. And the family internal stuff .... So much antagonistic parties, but they cluelessly stood around in the way of the "heroes"...

I really liked The Wolverine, right up until he gets captured and strapped in that chair.

After that, it starts to strain credulity, and gets pretty dumb. But regardless of that final 20 minutes or so, it's a good entry into the superhero pantheon. And the post-credits scene is great, even though I knew more or less what was coming.

Know what I watched tonight? Daredevil. That was a crappy movie.

Based upon what Alex said about the Wolverine not being your typical action hero movie I went to see it.

It's definitely not bad and I probably enjoyed it a lot more since I didn't know the source material. Not sure who the silver samurai was but I can only imagine he wasn't the same thing as in this movie.

One annoyance I have is that writers need to find better ways to tell a story about nearly invincible heroes without falling on the crutch of taking away their powers for half the movie. I don't think anyone enjoys going into a film about Wolverine only to see him limp around - essentially you're left to put up with watching this really cool character stripped of all his potential meander around until the plot picks back up.

I used to be in film school until I found the overwhelming, unrelenting tide of head-planted-in-ass bullshit to be too much to bear. My 180-degree rebellion led me to the world of TV-commercial editing.

Regardless I did like Only God Forgives, but found it rather unsettling, and certainly not enjoyable. The kind of movie I can only watch once but appreciate the craft involved. Especially the cine, that movie is beautifully shot.

I have to agree with Alex on OGF in that I don't know if I could honestly recommend it to anyone. I enjoy different types of cinema, even the experimental kind to a degree, but found almost nothing redeeming about this "experience." Even the cinematography didn't impress me as much, although it is clearly the highlight of it all. I consciously am avoiding using the word "movie" as that carries with it certain expectations that were clearly not met. The standard movie goer will despise OGF while the more adventurous folk with an affinity for more unrestrained filmmaking should approach it with caution.

Went to see Only God Forgives last night and came away absolutely entranced. I thought it was one of the best things I have seen this year. To me it is the absolute essence of cinema, everything boiled down to its purest form, just minimal dialogue, with all the mood and nuance delivered through image and expression.

I think it is a film which you need to be prepared for. It was interesting to watch it a full cinema with a lot of people who obviously expected Drive 2 or were just there for Ryan Gosling. There was a palpable air of tension and fear at what they were going to be exposed to next especially after the horrific torture scene when the guy is pinned to the chair. It was like being with an audience who had come to see One Direction but had been locked in a room with some chicken-stomping Death Metal band.

It helped me that I knew it was going to be film which relied on visuals and mood. I arrived prepared to treat each scene as if it were a picture to be studied rather than a sequence of moving images and meant I got a lot more out of the film than I might have otherwise. Normally I like to know as little as possible, in order to be surprised, but this was an experience which required some work on the part of the viewer, something a lot of people resent, which might account for some of the mixed reaction.

I can't remember the last time I saw such a wonderfully shot film. You could take every frame and hang it on your wall, so perfect was the composition, lighting and mood. Everything tiny detail of the film seemed to be there for a reason and combined to create this masterpiece of neon doom, which just drew me right in. The slowness and stillness of so much of it just added to the air of menace and fear.

I'll just add one more thing about Ryan Gosling's character. It was almost shocking to see him play a character who is so emasculated, weak and uncertain after seeing him portray so many silent stoic heroes on screen and I think Refn really played on the audience's expectations of what a Gosling character should be. The scene at the dinner table with his mother and prostitute girlfriend was astonishing. There is a moment when the camera cuts to his face after his mother has gone on a tirade about how small his cock is and how much bigger his brother's was and we realise how defeated and damaged he really is. It stays on his face for a few seconds and looking at him it is almost impossible to believe this is the same Ryan Gosling we have seen up on screen so many times, looking confident and in control.

This is definitely a film school movie, but I don't think you need to be wearing a beret, or any sort of hat. You just have to be prepared for a film which requires some concentration, thought and willingness on your own part to be immersed in the experience. This is not a bad thing and it will reward you if you put in the effort. Its not hard to do, the film is barely 90mins long, and if you are the sort of person who likes to think and talk about your movies afterward there is tons here to digest and discuss.

@leebmx Really agree with your assessment of Gosling's role, it was great to see him in such a contrasting role to Drive. The film was beautiful but especially affecting for concentrating on the worthless and the weak as the central characters, essentially pushing the 'hero' to the sidelines.

Well, except for when he singing karaoke.

If Valhalla Rising is Refn's 2001 then this was his Barry Lyndon.
