I used to be a beret-wearing film student but then I admitted I liked Demolition Man and had no interest in The Artist.

Also I really liked The Wolverine!

I really liked The Wolverine! Easily my second favorite X-Men movie.

Also, Alex spoils like half of The Wolverine, which isn't stated in the description thingy. Though, I somehow managed to see The Wolverine without seeing any of the trailers for it, so maybe what I consider a spoiler isn't that spoilery.

Sorry that we still don't have a name or music for this! If it seems like I only start thinking about the next episode about 15 minutes before I record it...well, that would be a pretty accurate assumption.

I'll try to get some music finalized before the next episode, at least.

Also, that image is totally one for the ladies. You're welcome, ladies!

I quite enjoyed Only God Forgives myself. I think a lot of people went in with the wrong expectations, thinking they were going to see Drive 2 or something.

Lt. Chang is the Thai Anton Chigurh.

@rorie @alex

Avengers 2 Age of Ultron will not be related to the comics event. It will also be quite different from the comics. Hank Pym will NOT be in Avengers 2. And the Ant-Man film will be about Scott Lang, not Hank Pym.

Rorie, is there any chance that you could just drop the premium thing and make this available on iTunes for everyone? I do all of my podcast business through iTunes and it would make things so much easier for me.

I agree. I didn't know what to think of it, then I thought about it for a few days and watched it again. Really liked it.

But even if it's too allegorical for its own good, I'd still recommend it to anyone for the visuals alone. Especially the composition.

@charaznable: I'm pretty sure you can add the premium podcast RSS feed to iTunes and it should work that way. But we don't have any immediate plans to make this non-premium.

I really, really liked Wolverine. It wasn't great in my opinion, mostly in part due to the third act of the film but it is easily one of, if not my favourite X-Men film!

I expected that most people wont like Only God Forgives but I havent had a chance to see it yet. It's great that you mentioned Eyes Wide Shuts' dreamlike qualities though, because I'm fascinated by that movie. So would you say that it atleast offers something to people who are bored by generic hollywood productions?

When you were saying that no one liked X-Men Origins Wolverine, you accidently slipped the words "First Class" in there.

I almost wasn't able to hit play on this podcast because I was too busy leering at Hugh Jackman's INSANE build of a body.

Also, holy shit, this podcast needs a new title.

@jimmy_p: It definitely offers itself to multiple interpretations, I'll say that much for it. I think there are plenty of movies that manage to be quiet and mysterious while also being compelling, though, and I don't think OGF is really one of them, alas.

Sure! It's at least open to multiple interpretations. It's mysterious and quiet, but just didn't really manage to be all that compelling to me.

"unless you're a beret-wearing film student " Well I don't rock a beret (my hair is to long) but I enjoyed it? I understand why a lot of people do not like it.

The Wolverine was a whole hell of a lot better than I expected even with the poorly coryographed third act.

Cheap plug but yall can read my reviews for both those films over at screened.

I love that a Directors Cut of Elektra exists, didn't that use to be like a prestige thing for films like Alien and Blade Runner.

I would have definitely written a paper on Nicolas Winding Refn's (minimal/absent dialogue) style back in college as a film student. I still don't know if I like Only God Forgives (and Valhalla Rising for that matter). I got into a weird trance like state while watching Only God Forgives, but don't know if that's a good thing or not. I feel like it was trying a little bit to hard to be slow, vague and obtuse, but Refn's visual style alone was enough to keep me interested. Drive was also pretty slow, but that soundtrack was way more of a 'driving' (hehe) force behind the film.

Loving the podcast. I kinda miss Screened now.

Refn definitely apes Kubrick aesthetically in terms of framing and color, which I really like, but I do think it can get a little distracting.

In a Q&A of his I watched, he pitched Only God Forgives as a movie about a guy chained to his mother's womb (among other things), and mentioned (sort of jokingly) that the film 'takes place inside the vagina'. Haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know if that holds water, but maybe it helps elucidate what he was going for? But I definitely agree there's a danger in mistaking aesthetic for content.

Additionally, I could see a Jodorowsky connection from Santa Sangre, which is about the relationship between a domineering mother and her son. I would recommend starting with El Topo if you're going to get into his films, though, as it's more enjoyable to watch in terms of coherence and "stuff happening".

I want a version of Only God Forgives where they strip away the dialogues (what little there is) and the sound effects. Keep just the image and music and it's a thing of beauty.

I liked The Wolverine a lot. Character + dialogue focused like an actual comic book, with more personal stakes and not about saving the universe (again). Wei from Sleeping Dogs plays the head ninja.

Funny they mentioned a Poltergeist remake, since The Conjuring is the closest thing. It's very standard as possession stories go, but executed in a way that made me care for the characters. The ghost hunter characters especially were grounded in reality, portrayed more like exterminators just doing their jobs. Technically though it uses ALL the tricks, with shadowy cinematography that made me fear dark corners/doorways immediately afterwards. Haven't had a movie affect me like that since Blair Witch. Also, there's a character named Rorie in it.

Now, now... It's also there to shame us guys.

I really liked the Wolverine as well. It's probably my favorite of all the Fox Marvel movies.

I was also pleasantly surprised by just how respectful Japan was treated in the movie, being someone who lived a significant portion of their life there. Hell, I've even stood in places where some of those scenes were filmed. I was also surprised on just how much Japanese was left completely untranslated.

You guys familiar with those Linklater/Hawke/Delpy romance films? Before Midnight is the best film I've seen this year by a fairly large margin. Everything else I've seen exists solely on that summer movie scale - I mean, I liked This Is the End and Pacific Rim, but I'd simply say they were fun summer movies.

@nicked: I can definitely see the mother's womb connection. Refn is even pretty explicit in that connection without giving away spoilers.

And El Topo and The Holy Mountain are on my watchlist for ages now. However, almost never in the mood to watch those films (I also have a pretty long Lars von Trier list of shame).

Always respected Rorie for having an open mind for so called "pretentious" movies while still not being a film snob. I personally dug Only God Forgives, I think it was an interesting watch and I did stay at the cinema till the credits were over which I almost never do in a theater

@civid: Yeah, I'm kinda mixed on it. Sounds like I liked it more than Alex did. Need to give it another whirl at some point, but in the end it feels like I might need some smarter person explain it to me, especially if it's referencing a director I'm not very experienced with.
