Despite their best efforts, I'm still interested in playing Shadow Warrior 3. It definitely has a bad stigma from the 90s original, but I think the 2013 reboot and SW2 were much more respectful. This opening to SW3 certainly doesn't make a good impression though. While I don't feel that it's outright racist, the scales seem to tipping away from representation and more towards exploitation. This is unfortunate since they cast Asian voice actors this time. So it's a shame the dialogue is worse than before (or maybe I'm misremembering the previous games). However, I think I can stomach the bad writing if the gameplay is fun. I was kinda curious where the story was going, but I'm lowering my expectations for that now.

I'm glad SW3 got rid of the loot. So many games have loot, and so much of it is total garbage. SW2 was overstuffed and grindy. Give me a tight campaign over loot schlock any day.

AFIK they're different words. The one with two o's is the slur and "guck" means slimey/dirty. They aren't even pronounced the same way. I'm from NY, so maybe it's an east coast thing.

I know i'm one person, but as an almost 30 year old Asian man, not a single person i've ever known has cared or been offended by gook. If we want to offend someone or if we're offended a "Fuck you" is way more likely to be the cause of an offended Asian man rather than gook.

I've never seen guck but i will continue to use gook and goop to refer to slime. I find this to be another case of people being overly sensitive FOR other people who don't actually give a damn on a whole.

The primary search result the term we're all pretending isn't primarily a slur, is the slur definition. In fact, "slime" comes up 0 times as a result, including in dictionaries and etymological sources.

It's been a slur with that definition for over 100 years, folks. If anyone easily misspoke and said it because it sounds like "guck" or "gloop" or "glop", no one is calling that person a bad person. So put the strawman away, while you're at it.

I’m terms of mispronounced words, I always read the word “segue” as “seeg”, even though I had heard the correct pronunciation many times. But for years I never connected the spelling to the word I had heard people say out loud. And a friend of mine always pronounced “hyperbole” as “hyper bowl”.

@twily:Yeah I'm Vietnamese but when Bakalar said it it didn't register at all to me as the slur. I feel like the "oo" is pronounced differently.

To be fair though isn't the slur aimed at Koreans specifically?

@andrew2696: I'm also Viet! I have heard from war vets that visited my schools back in the day that they heard gook during 'Nam but it wasn't THE word. They said and did alot of things during 'Nam. The Vietcong as well of course.

The war vets all kind of pronounced it differently but they were from different areas. Could chalk it up to accents.

Thank you Jeff for continuing to be a fashion trend setter. Just bought a Tom Hanks Pissin shirt. I'll make sure to give you props when I get compliments and scolding out in public.

That face adventure game is novel, but i'm not sure it gets the most out of it's mechanic. It's just not a very interesting problem to figure out which facial expression suits the moment.

But i do think it might be an influence on a better game that figures out a way to make this interesting.

Yeah, audio challenges and weird input schemes, but also unique gameplay experiments: all part of the fun of niche indie games. I like that she's exploring that space and finding so many to bring to UPF.

@twily: True and another point anyone using slurs directed at a race usually doesn't double check the intended audience so that makes sense they heard it there too.

Really liked this upf!

I finished Shadow Warrior 3 the other day. Its very short and bare bones. 5 hours, 6 guns, no meaningful upgrades or ability unlocks, no bonus modes or new game plus. No secrets or side content.

It felt very rushed and incomplete, like covid completely screwed whatever plans they had for the game as Shadow Warrior 2 was a like 3 or 4 times bigger more ambitious game I think.

I'm glad that Gerstmann found out about Instruments of Destruction! I haven't bought it yet, because my PC is 9+ year old tech, but I've been excited for this regardless. I've been following the developer (Radiangames) since his solo days on Xbox Live Indie Games marketplace.

I don't know why it isn't talked about more that Duke Nukem stole all of his quotable lines. Lo Wang sucks horribly but he's clearly being written by unfunny nerds. Duke Nukem just cribbed everything from better material and turned it all into dragon poop.
