Spartan X was based on the Jackie Chan film Kuàicān Chē (快餐車, released as Wheels on Meals in the West and Spartan X in Japan), also starring Sammo Hung, Yuen Baio, and Lola Forner.
The video game series began with the 1984 classic Kung-Fu Master, which revolved around Thomas rescuing Sylvia from the bad guys, like in the climax of the film. As the series progressed, the games became less and less like the film, with protagonist Thomas later becoming more or less his own character in Spartan X 2.
