In 1996 when Steve was only 20 years old he started a Quake fan site, " Quakeholio" to track the upcoming game Quake from id Software. As time went on, the site evolved and covered more than just Quake gaming news. He renamed the site Shugashack and then the site was re-named again to what it is now currently called: Shacknews. Steve hired several journalists who went on to other gaming industry news-sites over the years, and worked to maintain the backend of the site. Finally, in 2009, he sold the site to GameFly and took a break.
However, when he was presented with the opportunity to work for Gearbox Software by friend and President of the company Randy Pitchford, he jumped at the chance. He came on as the VP of Marketing and oversaw the last six months of the development of Borderlands and the resulting DLC.
