So I don't have an Xbox and I'm waiting for the Vita version that's coming next month, but Xbox One owners are getting it tomorrow and being fairly excited for this game I was hoping some of you would be too.
It's a first person turn-based dungeon crawler RPG in the vein of the old Wizardry games. You put together a party of 6 adventurers, your Fighters, your Wizards, your Clerics, etc., and go out to murder fantastical monsters one turn at a time. It's similar to the developer's (Experience Inc.) earlier games - Demon Gaze and Operation Abyss, and to the Etrian Odyssey games on (3)DS.
One thing I really think stands out with this game is the art. Most Japanese games of this type use a contemporary anime style, which isn't necessarily that bad, but it does lead to a lot of them looking rather similar. So instead Stranger launched with a more detailed, classic fantasy style. It's still anime influenced, but more something like a 90s Record of Lodoss War promotional poster than full on moé. It all looks really nice and striking if you ask me:
Curiously, for the international release the developer was advised that the contemporary anime look would make the game easier to sell, so they went back and redid all the character art with a new artist. It's completely optional though, so you're free to choose the style you want. You can see a trailer with the new style here.
So anyone picking it up?
(Even if you're in doubt there's apparently going to an 8 hour free trial... these are games you can sink tens of hours into.)
