Overview

Super Mario Bros. 2 is the US sequel to Super Mario Bros.  This game was not originally created to be a Super Mario game; but was a remake of the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic.  Nintendo's direct sequel  to Super Mario Bros. (titled Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) came out a year after the release of the original, but due to its extreme difficulty and similarity to the original Super Mario Bros, Nintendo decided to not release it in the US.
This version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was later released in Japan under the name Super Mario Bros. USA.

Differences

Because it was not originally created to be a Super Mario game, this game has extremely different functionally than every other Super Mario Bros game.  For example, this is the only Super Mario game in which jumping on enemies' heads does not affect them.  Instead, enemies are damaged by picking up objects, (or pulling up vegetables from the ground), and throwing them at enemies; or standing on the enemies themselves and throwing them into each other.  This is also the only Mario game to include a "life meter".  And although they implemented the "smaller" and "larger" characters due to Mushroom power ups, the player can be hit up to 4 times before being killed.

However, several characters and objects that first appeared in this game have since carried over to other Super Mario games.  (Shy Guy, Birdo, POW blocks, etc.)

Plot

Super Mario Bros. 2 takes place in the world of "Sub-Con".  It is also unique because this game does not require Mario to rescue the princess.   This unique story is justified by being just a "dream" of Mario at the end of the game, hence the name of the world, "Sub-Con", from the term "Subconcious".

Playable Characters

There are 4 playable characters in the game, each with a score of 1-5 stars for speed, jump, and power.  The player is allowed to pick a new character to play at the beginning of each level, or after dying.  This allows players to hand-pick the character best suited for a particular level.

  • Mario - Mario is the balanced character, with speed, jump, and power all at four stars.
  • Luigi - Luigi has the highest jump available, with a five in that category, while his speed and power are only a three.
  • Toad - Speed and Power are Toad's strength, with a five in both categories.  This allows Toad to pick up items extremely quickly.  This is balanced by his two in jumping ability.
  • Princess - Princess is rated as a two in speed and power, and her jump is only a three. However, she has the ability to float in the air for a couple of seconds by holding the jump button after your jump, making her great for long, not high, jumps.  [NOTE: In the remake released for the Game Boy Advance, Princess is named "Peach". She was referred to as "Princess" in the original version.

Super Mario Advance

SMB2 received an enhanced remake as Super Mario Advance, the first Mario title for the Game Boy Advance, which also contained a remake of Mario Bros. This version was developed by Nintendo R&D2. It included several graphic and sound enhancements in the form of enlarged sprites, multiple hit combos, and digital voice acting. For the first time ever on Nintendo's part was a system devised to score this game. Two notable additions are the new character, Robirdo, a robotic Birdo who acts as the boss of the third world, and the Yoshi Challenge, which encourages players to revisit stages and search for Yoshi eggs. Nintendo's decision to choose it as the Game Boy Advance launch game was seen by some as misguided; GameSpot in particular thought that Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World would have been a far better choice for a launch title considering their popularity. (Both of those titles would eventually be remade as part of the Advance series.) However, IGN praised the choice, calling it "one of the most polished and creative platformers of the era." Nonetheless, it was a best-selling launch game, showing that the game still appealed to Nintendo fans. Recently, the game has become part of the Player's Choice lineup for Game Boy Advance as one of the system's first three Player's Choice games (along with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Super Mario Advance 3 ).

Trivia

The game released outside of Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually a revision of a Japan-only release known as Yume Koujou:  Doki Doki Panic (Dream Factory:  Heart-racing Panic).  The game's main characters were replaced with Mario universe characters, and changes were made to the gameplay.  For example, the Mario characters would shrink when they only had one unit of life left, but would grow back to full size if they collected a mushroom.  The original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was later released as The Lost Levels in the Super Mario All-Stars compilation on the SNES and again as a Virtual Console download for the North American market.
