Yeah, the spelling kind of bugs me, but I'm also bugged by the part where the game seems like a less interesting Steamworld Dig.

The OP isn't talking about cultural variations. A Lode is very much a real thing when it comes to mining materials, as is a Motherlode.

Of course, having not played the game I have no way of telling if their spelling is perhaps a pun or reference within the game.

This. In context it's pretty bad. If the game wasn't ABOUT mining, it wouldn't be worth caring. But in context it is about as bad as "Words with Freinds".
