The fifth installment in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise is set in the eponymous province of Skyrim, where the ancient threat of dragons, led by the sinister Alduin, is rising again to threaten all mortal races. Only the player, as the prophesied hero the Dovahkiin, can save the world from destruction.
Well... DUH. You saved the world. That's the logical ending to all fantasy stories. Congratulations you beat the main quest, now go play the game some more.
No, despite what everyone is saying, you're actually only about halfway through the main quest. Did you really think it would just end abruptly like that? Fat chance. There's this whole meta quest line you have to go through after defeating Alduin to truly complete the main quest, but you have to trigger some pretty specific things before you get the update in your journal to continue. It has a lot to do with a link between Sovngarde and the dragon burial map you got given earlier on. I'll go into more detail if anyone is still stuck.
I felt like finishing the 'civil war' questline was more satisfying a conclusion than the main quest and killing Alduin. Glad I saved that for the very last, it just felt more, I dunno, impactful. Seemed like post-Alduin nothing much changed, and hardly anyone cared at the time that you just saved the world.

You almost had me going there for a second. Almost.
It was more a glimmer of hope, that there may be something hidden in Skyrim that makes it transcend its predecessors instead of merely improving them just a little bit, maybe a story bit which introduces some twists and turns that are worth putting in spoiler tags. No, just crushed by the stark realization that it was only cruel internet sarcasm.
OP: What did you expect, the Battle of Five Armies?
Skyrim's main quest is not that great. In all honesty the guild chains and civil war quests are almost just as long as the main quest. The civil war quest could have easily been the main questline with some minor changes
